Paris' spay surgery didn't go well

55 replies [Last post]

So I dropped my poor girl off today to be spayed. She has separation anxiety so I waited until the very last minute to take her. The vet came in and we talked about several things including her not coming out of anesthesia well from her emergency c-section 16mo ago along with the fact she had a reaction to the stitches and her anxiety. So he decided she would be first to be operated on and literally gave her an injection in the room which as it started to work I could see the panic in her eye as she was slipping under. He carried her into the surgery room and I never heard back from him. I told him I could pick her up about 4:30 so just when I was about to leave the house to go get her he called.

She apparently had a lot of adhesions from the C-Section that needed to be dealt with. He did the surgery and closed her back up they noticed as she was in recovery that she was bleeding so they knocked her back out and opened her up to see what was going on. Apparently an artery had been missed so it was ligated. He said she just wasn't coming back as nicely as he would like to see so they want to keep her overnight on fluids.

I feel so AWFUL for her and am literally sick. I just cant imagine having to be put out 2 times and cut open 2 times on top of her not dealing with anesthesia well. She is so attached to me and I'm sure all she wants to be is home. I also feel bad that tomorrow when I pick her up that I have to bring her right home and go to work! All I want to do is stay home and make sure she is okay. My poor poor Paris!

Oh, wow, Desiree, that's a lot to have to deal with.  Will keep you and Paris in my thoughts and prayers tonight, and wishes for a speedy recovery.  Poor girl---I'm sure they will take excellent care of her.

Oh Des, so sorry.  Wow, how scary.  I assume where she is that someone is with her all night...  be grateful that a tech was on the ball and noticed the bleeding and the vet jumped on it.  If she gets too anxious I'm sure they'll give her some valium to calm her.  They don't want her thrashing around.

Kisses to Paris and hugs to you, remember to breathe.  Good vibes to you..

I only image what you're going through right now.. Is there anyway you can call in sick to work tomorrow to be with her??. .even if she is groggy, Paris is despondent without you and I am so fearful for her ... and you will be such a wreck worrying about her.

Can they give her anti anxiety pills that will dull the sense of you being gone?

That poor girl has been through so much and so have you; I can only offer prayers and best wishes and please let us know how both of you are doing.

Much love to all the kids, but especially your sweet girl

JJ and I will say a special prayer for Paris. Your home must feel empty with Paris not being there. I know when she gets home she will feel so much better.

Sorry I missed this post last night.  I'll say a prayer that today goes smoothly.  Seperation anxiety is not a fun thing.  Our GSD had it, and if no has ever had a dog with it, it is hard to explain how complicated it makes everything.  He got some better as he got older, but I still remember his younger years and my sypmathy goes out you!  She knows and loves you.  She knows your love and commitment to her...it will bring you both through it.  lots of hugs from our way!

DES, all the hope and prayers for your girl. I too, hope you can stay home with her if possible. Very stressful for both of you. Let us know.

Well Im currently laying by and glued to Paris' crate. She was so happy to see me and go home this morning. She went and laid down in her crate I set up for her in the family room. She turned a few times very carefully at which time I noticed she is bleeding again. I called the vet who told me if it doesn't stop to bring her back in. I just want it to stop, I hope she will not have to be opened up a 3rd time. I ended up calling in to work, some things are more important. Also need to locate a soft ecollar for her today the plastic wont fit in the crate with her plus I want her to be as comfortable as possible. I'll get her up in about3 hours and check for bleeding. Im scared to look at her incision because of having to go in twice it is about 4 times the length of normal. I don't want to end up at the e-vets this weekend.
Thanks everyone for the prayers and well wishes. Paris is my heart dog and I of course love her so much. She has been through so much with her last litter and I of.course can't stand to see her suffer.

I'm late to the thread and my heart goes out to you.  How is your little girl doing today?

Thanks for everyones well wishes and prayers I think it helped. Paris has finally ate just a little and is drinking water. The bleeding finally stopped and we didn't have to take her back in yesterday. I was so glad I stayed home from work though. I sat by her crate all day long. I found the blow up donut that she has to wear when we cant watch her as she is such a licker and even with the metal sutures she still wants to lick them. Paris wants so desperately to be out with me at all times, the hardest part is at night when we go to bed. She has always slept with us in our room and wants so badly to go upstairs. Thanks to her pain meds it helps her to settle just a little. Romeo is also having a hard time because that is his play partner and he just doesn't see why he cant play with her. We have to keep either him or her in the crate and no one is happy right now lol.

I really do appreciate all the well wishes and prayers. No other list has such caring members on it and I truly appreciate all of you! Happy Easter to all.

Very glad to hear all is going well.I just got home and the first thing I had to do was log on and check...... after feeding my starving trio of course.

I must admit for many years now I've had a view towards dogs that weren't quite the same as most people. They are not just pets.........they're our best friends, our children, our family. Most people I open up to concerning my babies think I'm nuts. It's really great to come here and share my family with other people that understand and feel the same way.

Ditto what Patriot said!  I can only imagine the fun you are having trying to keep those two apart...I have my hands full just trying to keep one dobe quiet with no canine distractions in the house!  I know you are longing for these next few weeks to be over, I hope they go by quickly for you with no other mishaps.

YAY for finding the inflatable collar, how's it working out for Paris?  I'm thinking of getting one for Phin, the e-collar is driving him nuts and he's tripping over it every time I take him out to pee!

I hope things improve quickly and she's back on her feet soon.

Sorry I came in late but I am so happy she is doing well!

This hasn't been fun at all. I found the blow up collar at Petco I was shocked at how much it cost 38.00 Bought it anyway because I didn't want to put the plastic E-Collar on her and make her any more uncomfortable than she already was. Well the first  2 nights everything was great she slept with it on in her crate and did pretty well. Yesterday I had to work a double shift and when I came home in between to let her out she had it off. I thought it was just a fluke so used it again last night. Paris had me up 2 times last night ( I think she just wanted to come upstairs to bed with me) each time I got up she had the thing off! I tightened the heck out of it and luckily when I got home from work today it was still on.

Her stomach looks AWFUL it is so bruised and I've never seen that many sutures. The hardest part is either Romeo or her has to be crated at all times when we are home. I feel bad because they each just want to be with us, but if I let them both out than Romeo bugs Paris to play and I don't want Paris trying to get up quickly to warn him off that she isn't feeling good. Of course he doesn't take no for an answer lol. I'll be so happy when things are back to normal! I think I will let her go upstairs on Friday to sleep in our room this will make her and I feel much better. You should have heard the sad song she was singing last night trying to make me feel badly for her and let her climb the stairs.

Patriot I agree with you, when my human kids or the 4 legged kids are sick or hurt my world just seems to stop. I get so stressed out and it is nice to be able to share some of that on the list with people that understand.

BBroyles, Thank you I do believe that prayers were answered. I've never really shared her whole story of her traumatic birth and emergency C-Section but that is why I was so scared when the vet told me what had happened. So I'm so glad that she is really doing well right now.

Sir-Phin, LOVE the donut collar. So much better than the plastic old E-Collars!

You know I can imagine all the sad song whining, but you know each other! She is sore and uncomfortable and wants to be right under your wing. But she trusts your decision that it's not best for now. Makes the days so long when they have to be confined. Hang on Paris, That crate door will be open soon!

Hang in there RnD and give the girl a special hug from all of us and let her know we are all pulling for her early and complete recovery. I am also apprehensive about major surgery either on me or my kids. That's one reason Princess is still intact. Of course on my two major surgeries, since they were emergencies, in fact I was not even awake when the decision was made that surgery was necessary the second time.

I'm glad you were able to get the donut collar, looks so much more comfy than that hard, can't put my head down to sleep, whine all day and night from exhaustion e-collar.  I was wanting to get one for Phin after he had his ear crop done, but sadly it's not available in Canada at the store level, only online, which would cause it to arrive after all the sutures will be removed!

I hope that Paris heals quickly so that Romeo is able to play with her again.

How is Paris doing today?

Paris is doing so much better.Sutures will come out this week. I still need to roll her over and take a look at them. I can hardly stand to look at things like that but will make myself lol. She is climbing the stairs freely but I still wont let her jump on my bed which she loves to do in the morning and while I'm getting ready to go somewhere. She has also been trying to play with Romeo and I cant wait until she can play again.

Good, I'm glad she's so much better!

I know when Elka got spayed, it was so very hard keeping her calm and quiet.  She had an embarassingly long "jumping" phase, partly because most of the people we knew just let her, despite my admonishments.  So, after she got spayed, the first time somebody came into the house, I practically roared at them "DO NOT let her jump! If those sutures rip, she'll need surgery again, and it'll be your fault, and you're paying the bill!"

Guess whose dog didn't really jump much after those couple weeks? This guy's.

Poor Paris went back to the vet today to remove some undetected metal sutures. He got the ones that were sticking out but she has to go back in next week where they will put her under very quickly and remove more that are under the skin. She is having allergic reaction to the other sutures which we knew would happen and her poor little tummy is all knotted up. Those darn things take forever to dissolve. I'm hoping this is the last surgery this girl will ever have to go through!
