Hi All, Hi Anyone,

I'm just a little concerned that my "little boy" Maximus might be underweight. He is 25 weeks old today and weighs 25 KGs. His height at the withers is 61cm. In certain lights you can see his hip bones and in any light, you can see his ribs.

I read that its better for his joints not to be too heavy but on the other hand, I dont want to prevent his natural growth by him being too thin. He's acts like a healthy young dog, getting really fast and seems to be a happy-chappy so no concerns on that side.

He doesn't eat more of the dry food when I try to "feed him up" - especially during the warmth of the daytime. He will eat more wet food if he gets it but that gives him "the runs" (sorry to be so graphic but we are talking consistency of milkshake...).

Any thoughts on his ideal weight? And - if necessary - how to feed him up?

Cheers,
Leighton (for Maximus)

I'd like to know the answer to this too, we seem to be having an issue with Phin's weight, now that it's so hot out here, he's really not wanting to eat and for him to be outside for more than 10 minutes is impossible.  The heat seems to be affecting his bowels too, going from normal to milkshake from one trip out to the bathroom to the next.

Same here with Laith. First summer with him and he is acting funny. He is eating a lot less than normal and kinda skinny. I guess our dobes are like us. Want to show off their summer body!

wow he is big!!! laith is on the smaller side for sure then! He is one next week and I would imagine under 80.

Dont stress about weight. All Dobermans are different, some have larger bone, some are small, some are oversized. Am. Bred, European bred they all have different sizes.

I think Jes on one of her old posts put up a poster link of how to spot if your dog was proper weight. Maybe she will read this and repost it.

@rndobermans - I remember seeing that post. I will try to find it. The graphics were pretty on point. Question: I was talking with my breeder because we have been watching Laith's growth for a few months now. He is growing but is on the slim side. She told me that her 'line' matures later than typical. Is that something that could actually hold truth or no way to tell?

Just like to know! The mother and father were a lot bigger and Laith was the biggest pup of the litter. Maybe he is just fit? You can see muscles everywhere on him. Thanks!!!

@Laith--Ziva stayed more or less on the slimmer -to-average size until she was about 15 months old.  She reached her height pretty much by then and hasnt seemed to gotten any taller, but she started 'bulking up' so to speak after that 15-month old mark.  Her chest was already looking deep (or so I thought) but she looks even deeper chested now.  I was so used to seeing her be this slim, trim big pup, that NOW she almost looks overweight to me at times....but when I take pictures of her and look at them later, she's not looking fat at all.  Lots of muscles form when they get close to 2 yrs, too.

@Ziva's Dad -- Thanks! That's exactly where Laith is at. I think his height is pretty much set. he is so long and lanky! I guess that is what I am expecting is the bulk in his chest and maybe some more in his face. It's not as square as it once was. But I think the floppy ear makes the face look a little different anyway.

Sorry I missed this thread.. here's the image.  I think it originally came from Science Diet, it's a chart we had up at the vets office I first worked at.  It's a good way to visualize where your dogs weight is at.

Skye is about 25" and 50lbs... She looks skinny, but the vet said it was because she was still growing... so we upped her diet. She's not filling out, but she's getting a deeper chest and you can't really see her ribs anymore unless the light shines on her just right. She has got a lot of loose skin around her neck and belly area, but that could be due to the Shar-Pei in her too!! She's only 8 months old, so she's got a bit of growing up to do yet. Glad to here how every one's doing!!

These pics show the changes in Ziva's physique from 15 months old to 1 yr 10 months old.  Her chest got much deeper developed, and she muscled up, too.  The only thing I wish was a little different is the area where her 'tuck up' is...it's sort of flabby skin there if she's not stretched out and running.

Gauge just had his annual vet appointment, and he's at 73 lbs which the doc said is excellent for his age.  She said another 20-30 lbs over the next year won't be surprising as he'll start to fill out his chest and his legs will gain muscle.

I like to say he's in the teenager stage right now. If he were a person, he'd be in the unflattering glasses and braces stage of life.  His legs are long and skinny and his head and chest haven't filled out, so when you look at him straight on, he looks thin.  The doctor said she liked what she saw and felt on him, so there's nothing wrong with him.

He's just gonna get big over the next year!
