Hello,

I have a 2 months 10 days old Doberman puppy. When I got him from the breeder, he said I should feed him 50 grams (1.7 oz), 4 times a day. Since he is growing, I switched to 75 grams (2.6 oz), 4 times a day. He currently weights around 17 lbs. Is that okay?

How should you feed a puppy? Is there any kind of chart that helps owners feed their dogs? I don't follow the instructions on the bag, as they can be very confusing and untrue. I'd rather hear from other Doberman owners a tip or two.

I'm not so good at the weight of food - I recommend at that age giving 1 cup 3 times a day. So however much that weighs. Every dog is different so judging by how they are looking is best.  It is ok to see a slight outline of the last two ribs - but you should not see any of the other ribs and should not see hip bones, etc....

You may want to wet the food a little bit with warm water and let sit for 5-15 minutes so that it is a little softer for his baby teeth to crunch. You don't need to do this much longer.

Also, how much you feed will depend on the quality of what you are feeding. If the food is full of fillers (corn wheat, etc..), you will probably have to feed more for them to get enough protein.  I recommend a high quality kibble with no corn or wheat and meat as the first ingredient. Basically, if you can buy the food at your grocery store, chances are it is not good quality.

Make sure you have your puppy checked out by your vet - check for worms etc... and the breeder should have given you a shot/worming record to give to your vet.

Fitzmar, thank you for your post. He does get 3 cups, divided into 4 meals.

Now that you've mentioned the ribs, I think I can see 3 last ribs, but he doesn't look that thin. Maybe I should add a little bit more food into his diet? The hip bones are completely invisible, tho.

I always wet the food and let it sit for at least 10 minutes - that's what my breeder told me.

As for the shot/worming record - I have it. He was vaccinated against parvo and distemper (if I remember correctly) and he was dewormed. I have to get him vaccinated again in a week.
