my boys are eating me outta house and home on puppy food...they eat 2 1/2 cups twice a day as the bag says for theyre age and weight .....i would really like to get them off the mass produced food...but when i researched it i found so many different things...give them rice...never give rice...raw diet....vs cooked diet....does anyone on here give theyre dobes real food as opposed to kibble...any recipes...or how you find the guy who knows the right one for dobermans...the internet gave me opposite information both from apparent experts.....i have not done anything yet...but right now i am about 150 bucks a month to feed...and horse you are so right about the "evil" puppies...they chewed my oaklys....aaargh...they eat tin cans....and they are digging trenches up to a foot deep.....they get bored outside i think...trying to get them to chew sticks....i was working a lot...now i am on the couch and they love it......anyway...any food help from anyone would be appreciated

Well, first off, no mater how you feed kibble is going to be the cheapest. Puppies need a lot of protein (not too much), so you would be looking at a chicken a piece per day. Around here they're $5 each, so that's like $300 just for the meat.

The other problem is balanced nutrition. If you're using a quality food it has been tested and formulated for a specific life stage - puppy, adult, senior. So, you'd need to get vitamins too probably. (if you feed a quality food don't use vitamins!!!) Rice would be the carb. That's what they use in quality food.

How old are these fellows? If they're eating 2.5 cups twice it sounds like they're about 6-9 months. Once they mature they won't eat as much. Also, be sure to limit their exercise until they are about a year old and don't allow free-feeding. The amounts on the food bag are often over generous, so you might cut it back a pinch. Better to under feed than over feed with large breed puppies.

What kind of food are you feeding? There are about four cups of dog food in a pound. So if you're feeding 10 cups a day that's 75 pounds a month, about two of the big 40 pound bags. That would mean your food is $75 a bag!!!

I find the best way to save money is to shop around, watch for sales and coupons, and buy only the biggest bag of your brand they sell.

we're feeding a brand called natural choice...large breed puppy....we're using this because it was so good with all our other dogs...bags are only 30 lbs....so it 2 1/4 cups twice a day...hence 8 cups a day total...a bag lasts about 10-11 days..ie 90 lbs a month approx....we're on a frequent buyer programme thats give us a free bag every ten...or if we can buy six bags we get a deal too...but at 55 dollars a bag....its hard to get the cash together...i may have to...or work an extra day or two to keep them...for i have fallen head over heels with my angel devil puppy boys.....i am taking them up north this weekend...its their first time to the lake....should be almost as much fun for them as me....oh yeh..i really though making up real food would be cheaper....have  a great weekend all...hopefully when i get back  i can figure out how to post some pics of these boys...they are sooooooo beautiful

That explains it then. I didn't even know they made a 30 pounds bag. Natural Choice is a great food!!! Are you using the white bag, large breed puppy - controlled growth?

Nutro does make a 40 pound bag. Are you in the US? Around here, south of Detroit, it's around $40 - $50 dollars, $42 and Petsmart. I've seen it even cheaper at feed stores. If you ask your local store to start carrying the 40 pound bags I'm sure they would.
