Soleil will be going to vet today to try to figure this out but I was wondering if anyone knows what could be causing this and how serious it might be.  It started last night.  I took her out for the last time before bed and she did not want to come in which is strange for her.  She always comes when she is called.  I got her inside and put her to bed.  (She is crated at night) At 3am she whining and crying and trying to get out of her crate so she was taken outside.  At this point I was getting concerned.  When she was done she came in and went back to sleep.  Then at 5:30 she was whining again.  Now I was REALLY worried.  This is so unlike her.  She went potty and when she came is she was dribbling a little and it was tinged with red.  She was cleaned up and she went to sleep.  She is looking so sad... I called the vets and the soonest she could be seen is 4pm so I have been worried all day.  She keeps squatting without peeing and she does not want to be inside except to sleep.  Any ideas...?  ???

That is certainly a urinary infection. Likely e coli bacteria. The bacteria causes inflammation and bleeding, and makes her feel like she needs to pee all the time.

The key is to treat the infection before it moves higher in the urinary system - kidneys. A course of antibiotics should to it. The tough thing is determining which infection and thus which antibiotic. Often vets will prescribe a broad spectrum antibiotic right away. But a urine culture should be grow as soon as possible so you can see what bacteria it is, so it can be properly treated.

You were right Horse... Vet thinks she has a UTI and she has been started on amoxiccilian? After only two pills she is doing MUCH better.  She is having a urine culture done but she is definitely much happier today.  Poor girl.  There is nothing more depressing than a sad, lethargic doberman.  She gets 2 pills a day for 21 days. Thank goodness she does not mind taking pills.... Today she is still rather tired but she is resting much more peacefully than yesterday.  Vet told us to make sure she rests, by tomorrow I think this will be much easier said then done.  She has that spark back today.  :)

That's good to hear. Just remember to keep up with the pills unless the vet changes them after the culture grows. Remember to give every last one.

I just heard from the vet.  Culture showed a "raging infection"  poor girl.  She will be taking ever last one of those pills and we are going to get  another culture in 2 weeks to make sure she is getting better... Two days ago she was not showing ANY signs of being sick and then this.  Wow! well at least she is responding to medicine as quickly as she gets sick.  :(
