Pet Profiles

Hello, everyone.

I have to say that I have gleaned so much information from this forum and I am grateful for everyone's input.  It has been invaluable as we welcome a new member of our family:  Xander.

Xander was born on May 27 and is now 9 weeks old.  I won't lie and say that having him has been all peaches and cream - definitely not so!  A puppy is definitely high maintenance and will test you down to your last nerve, but it all makes up for it when you get a wet sloppy kiss, complete with puppy breath.

Here is our boy, taken just today, floppy ears and all.

We are so impressed with how smart he is.  He has mastered "Sit" and "Come" ... now if we could just get him to master "No Bite."  :D  He also does well on a leash, but will need further training so that when he is 100 lbs. it's still him on the leash and not the other way around.

Dobies are the best dogs ever!  We are so lucky to be his two-leg family!

Oh what a gorgeous boy! Welcome and hope to hear all your troubles because I am only 3 weeks ahead of you, having a 12 week old boy, so I know exactly what you are going through. I really wish you lived in my neighborhood so our puppies could play, not a lot of dobies around here and the two that I have seen are full grown  :-\

Oh and I am still waiting for the "No bite" command to take effect. He does respond, but it just hasn't completely stopped yet. I know he is teething, but he really doesn't need to bite me or anyone else, he has plenty of toys. One thing you could try is to give out a high pitched yelp, the way a puppy would, when he bites.

I love the reds, especially the mahogany red color. I have two as you will see if you go back to my posts. My youngest is a red female name Princess whom I got in January at the age of 9 weeks. She is now 8 months old and giving my older red male (Red), who is 6 years old, all he can handle. They are outside for about 30 minutes, and they come back in and he flops down and she is taunting him and barking because he has stopped playing.

Keep working on the "No Bite", but do be aware of the fact that it is a normal puppy on puppy action so he has pretty much been doing it all his life. I was successful fairly quickly with Princess, although she still bites Red. Red on the other hand still likes to give a a wet slobbery kiss and nip me on the ear as he is doing it. After 6 years, I figure that's about as good as it gets, so after two licks, I have him back off (he usually nips after the third or fourth lick).

Looking at his structure at 9 weeks and his muzzle, 100 pounds is a good estimate. Before he was diagnosed with a thyroid condition and began treatment, he was up to 147 pounds. The last time he was weighed he was at 110, and had more energy and was really slimming down. He might not get much lighter, although you can't see his ribs yet, he is a lot slimmer. BTW - my original goal was 120 pounds.

The reds are my favorite too, though I've also owned a black.  Oddly enough, there aren't any dobermans in our area.  Even our vet exclaimed that they haven't had a dobie in their office in quite some time.  I like being unique, and Xander is certainly that.  Although, I do get a little tired of the "Oh, cute.  What kind of dog is it?"  I should think it's obvious.  Maybe once his ears are cropped people will recognize him for the regal beast that he is.

Candace, with your boy being 12 weeks, I hope that things like potty training and general obedience have began to work themselves out more.  We are crate training our boy, and he's doing rather well with that, but we're still worried about letting him have too much freedom in the house.  For now he is confined to the kitchen and front hallway (where his crate is).  We've invited him down into the family room with us, but it's like he becomes possessed and he immediately starts scratching and biting the carpet, attacking the couch, and playing extra rough with us.  The little stinker.

For the "no bite" we've just been keeping a lot of his toys on hand so that we can distract him when he becomes too nippy.  I've also just gotten up and walked away from him when he's hurt me to signify that playtime is over.  He is better with obeying me than with our daughters, who he clearly sees as litter mates and tries to tackle every chance he gets.  They aren't thrilled with it, and the euphoria of finally having a puppy is definitely wearing thin with them.

I'm so glad to be able to be a part of this group and talk about something that we all love: Dobies!  I especially love all the photos.  Keep 'em coming!!

:) What a darling and those eyes look so innocent hehe. I always try to take a pic every two weeks...they grow so fast lol..
I would like to say that teaching my pup the no bite command was all my own doing but i really have to give thanks to the lady dogs that live at my beach community.
:)They very quickly showed Q in a matter of seconds that him trying to hang on to their flanks whilst running was definite no no. I guess a mother dog with her own pups would do the same thing. Q is now always respectful with other dogs even those handbag ones :) Its really lovely to see him playing in a group.
Ive never used tug toys until recently but I was reading an article that stated tug toys are actually beneficial and used with aggressive dogs to encourage them to use up their contained energy. Not that Q has any aggression. Its also cute that now he is taller I can walk with my hand on his head without bending down. :)

As for potty training, don't expect too much too soon, their bladders are the last thing to develop and won't be so until around 4 months. He is very good about it though, not too many accidents although they are just bound to happen. Just yesterday after I woke him up from his crate I took him to the area where he normally plays (dining room with a baby gate, next to the back door), and he started playing with the cats, then out of no where he squatted and started peeing, I immediately said no and took him outside where he finished. I don't know why I didn't take him out immediately after he woke up, I know it was my fault. I still have no sign from him at all if he needs to go, unless I always miss it. I'm not expecting him to reliably potty trained until about 6 months, so there is still a long way to go. We have the crate in our bedroom so I only crate him at night and he sleeps soundly through the night (right up until 6am), then occasionally if he falls asleep during the day I will lay him in his crate, he's not too fond of it when he is awake and isn't chewing something interesting (like right now he is whining and pawing at the crate door). We need to go to the park now and get him some exercise.

With the obedience training I am having lots of fun. He picks things up so quick, so far he knows: sit (of course), down, shake, sit and stay, off, leave it (although that needs some more work), give it (needs work), stand, and come.  My next goals are for him to walk on a loose leash, although it is coming along quite well so far, we just love off leash so much at the park that it is hard to be firm on a leash.

Xander has done pretty well with potty training.  Of course, it helps to have a family that watches him closely when it seems he needs to go.  We've only had a couple accidents in the house.  We are trying to train him to ring a bell when he needs to go out.  I think he's starting to get it.  Dobies are so smart!

The obedience training is coming along as well.  I started teaching him "Shake" but he just stares at me like I'm stupid.  One thing at a time.  He just had his ears cropped and he's been acting rather naughty since coming home from the vet.  It's probably a combination of a break in his routine and feeling pain in his ears without being able to scratch (not to mention having a styrofoam cup taped to his head).

Hopefully his behaviors will even out quickly and we'll be back to our sweet (albeit mischievous) boy.

Do you have current pictures of your baby up?

This is the most current I have and with me in the picture it puts into perspective how heavy he is getting! He was exactly 3 months old on the 1st of August. I am going on a short hike with him soon and will take more pictures, there are more randomly throughout the forum as well (some under "first timer").

And as for the 'shake', he learned that quite fast since he naturally paws a lot. So when he pawed onto my hand I said "Shake!" and gave him a treat.

He is absolutely adorable, Candace!!  I'm amazed at how fast they grow!  He would be a great playmate for Xander, were we closer.  I'm looking forward to taking our boy camping with us.  Your dobie clearly loves the outdoors - just look at his happy face!

:) beautiful pics and bluedobie...I'm jealous of all that greenery....we do have bush near by but its DOC land and no dogs allowed so as to protect our endangered species. Also heavily baited with 1080 so the beach is much safer :)

Qtip - You will have to explain - DOC? 1080?

BlueDobie - I'm not sure what area that is but the foliage and terrain looks a lot like the Blue Ridge Mountains (I lived in Lynchburg, Va for almost 10 years just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains). Brings back memories.

Oops sorry :D DOC land belongs to The department of conservation and whilst hikers/trampers are happily allowed to go anywhere on the many trails and walks that abound NZ its a strictly no dog thing. Mainly because dogs kill the Kiwi one of our many flightless birds.
1080 I believe originally came from Australia...its a type of pea that is highly poisonous and will kill any introduced animal such as possums, ferrets, feral cats along with dogs, sheep and cattle leaving the native animal alone
We have a lot of ariel drops...im really not that happy with it because i am sure it can get into the water system. :-[ Our clean and green image really isnt :(

I can understand the no dog rules to protect the native species, but wide spread use of poisonous bait can have disastrous unintended consequences. I hope you keep a close eye on Q when in that area.

RGreen, the photos of the hiker and dobie are actually BlueDobie and her sweet boy.  I'm impressed at how well they hike together.  I have yet to take Xander anywhere but around the neighborhood.  I live in Utah and we have lots of great outdoor trails, but I'm not sure how many are open to dogs.  Can't wait to take Xander camping.  :)

I've never been through the Blue Ridge Mountains, but I have to say I'm rather partial to the Wasatch Mountains.  ;)

Yes, I realize that now. I corrected that post. Actually in one of the photos there is a sign that tells us exactly where it is. The sign says "Little Grand Canyon Trail", and looking it up it is in the "Little Grand Canyon" near Murphysboro, Illinois.

That's right RGreen! I live about 15 minutes from Little Grand Canyon, so the greenery is part of the Shawnee National Forest. Always surprising when someone sees it is in Illinois, even people from Northern IL don't know how different it is down here. This area is where the glaciers stopped after they slid down from the North and flattened everything in their path up to here, where there are lots of bluffs and hills. This area is filled with hiking trails, and I don't know what I would do if they didn't allow dogs. I think the requirement is that they have to be on leash at all times on state property, but I have to admit I don't obey that rule all the time. There are so few people in this area that I rarely run into anyone on the trails. I only came here to go to college, although I graduated in May, I am still here. Ideally I would like to live on the West coast, in California or Oregon. It gets really humid here and the mosquitoes are currently insane! I wouldn't have to worry about that over there, plus there is plenty of variety of landscape all near each other, desert, mountains, forests and the ocean. Speaking of mosquitoes, Lou has been scratching his underside a lot, and he is covered in a rash and pimples and it is getting worse. Either he is allergic to something or the mosquitoes and other insects are biting him, but it has formed scabs and I don't know what to do about it. I have tried wiping him a few times a day with baby wipes. It started on his belly and is now all the way up to his chest. Is this just something that is common in blues, or has anyone seen this before? I will be seeing my vet in 2 days, so I hope he can give something that will help.

Qtip, I live about as far in the middle of the US as you can get, which means I am not even close to any coasts, so I am very jealous of your "beachery". I can't wait to show Lou a beach.

Some of the irritation actually comes from him licking the area. The vet should have something to relieve the area. Who know, some of the same things that work on us, (Lanacane, Lotrimin and Benadryl) it just depends on the source of the irritation. But, it is best to talk it over with the vet. I remember one night my female Min. Schnauzer got curious (she was about 7 months old) and stuck her nose in an ant bed (fireants if I remember right) and of course she immediately started hollering. Now have you ever tried to get fireants out of a Min. Schnauzer's beard? What really concerned me was that her lips and face immediately started swelling. I called the vet and he said to give her benadryl. My late sister was visiting and immediately ran into town to get it, while I started combing her beard to get the ants out.

:) blue dobie when I was in Darwin (OZ) I used to get bit all the time by mozzies... somebody suggested extra Vit B which can be found in those yeast type spreads like Vegemite.
Alternatively you could also use some essential oils as a deterrent....they do need to be diluted however (apart from lavender and citronella). Lavender is a great oil for the skin and aids healing, but it also has a calming effect

rgreen ouch to fire ants.. poor Schnauz!

mozzies = mosquitoes?

Vitamin B does work. Years ago I had heard that taking an excess of vitamin B would cause the excess to be cast off by the body by the sweat glands. There is a definite odor related to it, and it requires you to sweat and you have to start at least 48 hours before you go out, but it does work. For the two legged there are many spray on repellants, but I don't know about for dogs. After all, anything you spray on, they will lick off.

:) Sorry  :) I'm british by birth but living with the ozzies and kiwis for the last six years has made me talk and write just like they do. I ruin the queens english these days. 'blush' :)

When i wipe Q down with his chamois leather I normally put a couple of drops of Teatree oil into the water. I find it gets rid of his doggy smell. :)

All of the former "Colonies" have added their own flavor to the language. It does make it all interesting.

A friend of mine retired from the US Air Force and was stationed in the UK (RAF Greenham Common) and was present at an American Independence Day Celebration on July 4, 1976 (200 years). A featured speaker was the Queen. She got up and in the delightful British dry humor, looked over all the US servicemen there and said "All is forgiven, you can come home now." She brought the house down.

The Americans, Canadians, Aussies and Kiwis all have their own unique slang. Of course the US being so large has differences by region. And of course that doesn't even count the accents.

Well, the vet says it is a bacterial skin infection and gave me capsules (I think with some sort of oil in them) to give him. We'll see how that works and tomorrow I am going to give him a bath in some tea tree oil shampoo we have at work. Maybe I will give the vitamin B a try also. Thanks for the advice

Here is Xander at 12 weeks.  His ears are healing nicely and he's going in for a post change and the beginning of Week #3.  He weighs about 25 lbs.  And, he's firmly planted into our family.  We can't imagine life without him.

Here is Xander now at 19 weeks.  His tapes are off his ears, but we have to use the Breathe-Rite strips on his left ear as it droops a little on the tip.  They were standing perfect when this picture was taken.  It's difficult to get a good pic of him because he hates posing for pictures...  He just can't sit still, no matter how many treats he's bribed with.

I think he looks like Anubis, the Egyptian God, don't you?

this is an excellent example of a lovely pet crop. His ears do not have a large bell on them and do not distract from his head. The line from muzzle to back of skull is unbroken as the breed standard calls for in a "blunt wedge shape". Very nice crop and Xander looks great, his ears are a PERFECT length. Where were his ears done?

Xander is now 6 months old (on the 27th of this month) and while I haven't weighed him for a while, he's about 60 lbs.  His ears are, for the most part, complete.  His left tip still sags a bit, despite repeated tapings.  I think we'll just leave it as his character mark and call it good.  When he's alert, they stand beautifully... it's only when he's just perking his ears that you can see the weakness.  I think it makes me love him more (if that's possible).

We got our first snow here in Utah earlier this month.  I was worried that Xander would hate it and refuse to go outside to do his business.  Boy, was I wrong.  He absolutely LOVES the snow - he plays in it, tries to catch the falling snowflakes, runs tracks all over the yard... He's comical to watch.

These pictures didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped, but here is Xander's first snow experience.  :o)

Yep, Utah starts getting snow in October/November and it lasts until March.  Our state boasts "the Best Snow on Earth" but I'm not a big fan of the white stuff, so I can't really comment.  We are in the middle of a warm snap right now and most of the snow in the Valley is gone, but the mountains are still pretty and white.  Perfect for the skiers...

And, thank you for the compliments on Xander.  HIS  ;) ears have been a source of irritation for us as owners, but he sure looks beautiful when they are perked up.  I always thought a dobie with natural ears didn't quite look right, but after seeing some breathtaking photos of the natural dobies here at GentleDoberman (Q included!) I've reevaluated my opinion...

Xander is now officially 6 months old and weighs in at just over 60 lbs (and growing more every day).  I can see that he's starting to fill out and gain more muscle and his face is changing more too.  He's looking more adult, even though he still acts like a puppy.  You wouldn't know it to hear him bark though... what a powerhouse sound that is!

He does whine quite a bit still.  Whenever one of the family leaves the house (or just closes a door on him) he'll stand at the door and whine like his life is over.  I'm hoping he'll grow out of that because it's really not very "manly" of him.

He hasn't lifted his leg yet, which is fine by me.  I saw in another post that Rocky had started doing it.  Is it something they pick up on their own, or do they need to see another dog doing it before they get the idea to try it?  He has an appointment for next month to get neutered... will that mean that if he isn't doing it by then that he won't ever lift his leg?  Will he always squat?

Xander loves to play and has no shortage of toys around the house.  However, his toys don't last very long as he relishes ripping them to shreds.  If a toy has a tag on it, that's always the first to go and then it just escalates from there.  Tennis balls don't last longer than a few days before the green fuzz has been ripped off, leaving it a naked rubber ball.  Even the Kong Wubba toys don't last long in his jaws.  Better those than our shoes though, right?

He's doing better on his walks too.  It used to be that he'd pull and drag us around the neighborhood, but after some training and firm correction, he's actually walking along side of us.  It makes strolling so much more enjoyable.

We love having him in our family.  Our daughters enjoy him too, but lately they've been asking for a cat.  I really don't think that's going to happen anytime soon.  LOL

Since I love seeing everyone else's photos of their pets, here is the most recent photo of Xander taken earlier today.  He's sitting and waiting for a treat of some leftover turkey from Thanksgiving (that's why he looks so eager)....

That is one nice looking Dobie.  I also like the cropped and docked look.  people have mistaken Snoopy for a coonhound because of his all natural look.  Even my brother thought he was mixed with lab because rarely people even see a dobie with a tail.  It is also snowing this time of year in Colorado.  we are pretty close to the mountains and they are covered also.

well that is a good pic of Xander and he does look like he is maturing a little...

Classic pose of a handsome boy. I personally do not favor neutering before one year unless you have an active female present and do not want an accidental litter. Red was 6 before he was done.

I am not sure if he will lift his leg if neutered before he does. That is a question for the vet. I do know that males who have been neutered when very young tend not to. I had a friend who had a mop dog that had been neutered before he was 3 months old, and never raised his leg and had a puppy voice.

As for raising his leg, that comes naturally as he matures. My first and current male dobes (Hans and Red) never had an older male present to show them and they both started at around 6 months. But it does vary.

Beautiful pictures of your lad Xananders Mum, I'm expecting lots of Xmas type tree ones soon. I love the pointed ears and think they make the dobie a dobie. But they do seem awfully difficult to do?
I had to look back in my messages and Q didn't actually start cocking his leg until he was nearly nine months old. We have mainly girl dogs here at the beach so i think he did finally see a male doing it and copied. We met a little sheltie the other day and as she was a bit unsure of Q she began 'flysnapping' at him. Q immediately began doing it back and Ive never seen him do that before. I think they also pick up a lot at obedience class hopefully all good things... ;D

Wow!! In looking back over the comments and pictures, he has become that "regal beast" He's magnificent! Sofia is still a prissy miss. Will stay in "her room" ( we're closing up a house in the states) and there's a big cat who has lived here for 15 years. Sid rule the roost and will sashay past the door, while Sofie sniffs and wags, but leaves him alone. the only problem we have right now is the gardening chores. As fast as my husband can fill up the doberman size holes she's dug, she's off in another part of the yard digging more.. ( Looking for treasures?)
Xander is an amazing looking dog. Head and ears perfect, chest all puffy and mighty! GORGEOUS!Thank you so much for sharing your pictures and stories. Look forward to more

I love to show off my boy, and this picture taken just the other day is one of my all-time favorites.  It showcases one of his most unique character traits -- we call it his "buttstache."  Don't you just love those curly q's?

In keeping with the Cutest Pet Competition (I'm not biased at all!) I just had to share this new one of Xander.  His favorite thing in the whole world (besides his family, I'm sure) is his laser light.  It is affectionately named "Dot."  Xander will come out of a complete and dead sleep at the mere mention of Dot alert and ready to play.  His obsession with Dot actually got out of hand where we had to ground Dot for a week.  It was to the point where Xander would bark and hassle each family member when they were trying to watch television because he wanted to play with Dot so desperately.  So, for a week we had no Dot.  Then, last night, Dot came out to play once again.  Here is the resulting joy on our dobie's face:

Can you tell how much he loves Dot??  Is that not sheer joy in his eyes??

LOL

Xander has so much personality,I'll bet you could spend the entire day just watching his antics.
Thank you for sharing, and give our best to Dot!

Love Xanders enthusiastic expression. You can tell he is super pumped for that laser light. I myself have a laser light dog, Paris. She is nuts over it. I actually used it to train her for freestacking in the conformation ring. I got many compliments on the side line for the beautiful look it created. I've also used it in obedience training as a release after working. We also like to play with her in the snow with it near dark, great way to exercise. Did you happen to see the utube clip of someone playing with what appears to be a younger dobe and the laser light? whoever was videoing it thought would be funny to point it at this teenagers crotch, well of course you know what happened next. I dont think he was hurt  it was just a quick nip lol. My older daughter thought it was funny and sent it to me on myspace. The reason we think it was so funny is our dog will not go after it if it is pointed at anyone or the other dogs. In fact she will come and grab your hand with her mouth if it is not played the way she thinks it should be played. The other dogs get really grumpy when we play the game with her they think she is just plain nuts and growl at her, they cant see what the fuss is over a little red dot lol. They have some of the laser lights that do different shapes and Paris will not chase anything other then the dot. Same thing happens if I turn it on another shape she will stare at it for a few minutes and grab your hand with her mouth to tell me this is not the way I want to play.

Sorry so long enjoyed your pic, I truly understand that look!

Truly a very unique expression on his face. I know he is a great joy. I never knew they would play with the red dot. I have one around somewhere, I'll have to see if I can find it and see what HRH will do.

Xander even knows what D.O.T means\,spelled out.  Xander doesn't bite at the dot if it is on the couch or on someone, he does what we call a superman, two front paws flying through the air, to punch at the dot .. I have been nailed by the superman right where it hurts, and  oh ,do all my girls love watching me bend over in man pain:(

It will be interesting to see if they will like it or not. Paris had tried it when she was quite young and fell in love with it. The older 2 like I said think she is insane and act like they cant even see the dot.

Copied over from the other thread on how our dobies got their names:

When I was a little girl, our family had a red doberman named Alexander Von Ripper the Terrorizer III.  We just called him Alex, or "Bud" for short.  After Alex died, we got a black dobie and named him Ruger.  I had grown and moved out of the house by then and, wouldn't you know it, I married a cat man.  So, for the first 17 years of our marriage, we've had cats.

Last year, both of our cats died within a few months of each other.  It was lonely without a pet in the house and somehow I convinced my husband to let me get a puppy.  I found a Doberman puppy for sale and told him if he bought me that puppy he wouldn't have to get me an anniversary gift.  So, he relented and got me the puppy.

The puppy was red and beautiful and the only name that fit him was Xander, a derivative of Alexander, after my childhood doberlove.  We dubbed him "Xander Von Menace the Destroyer," which can be taken differently depending on the day.  In his early puppyhood, Xander was a menace to us and a destroyer of all things his puppy teeth could get attached to.  As he is getting older (and bigger) he becomes more menacing and a bringer-of-potential-destruction to anyone who would dare harm the family.

And, wouldn't you know it... Xander was MY anniversary gift, but that dang doberman attached himself to my husband instead!  I know Xander loves me, but not quite the same way he loves my husband.  Grrrrrrrr.

I keep threatening that I'll get a Min-Pin and name him "Mini Me" just so I can have a dog to curl up to on the couch... I doubt that will happen though, since Xander would probably name it "Snack."    ;)

Spring has sprung here and so we went walking with Xander around the neighborhood today.  Had three separate people (strangers that we don't know) stop and remark what a good looking dog we have.

I could only smile and say, "Thank you."

I know it already... but it sure makes me a proud dobie mama to hear it.

;D

I too have an affinity for the reds, and Xander is a fine example. I know he is a great pleasure to you. I always tell people that a Dobie will attach themselves to one member of the family more than the others, but no one knows which one that will be until the dog does it.

Happy Birthday, Xander!!

Today Xander is one year old.  Currently he weighs about 80 lbs. and he's still very much a puppy.  A year ago we couldn't picture our lives with a dog, and now we can't picture our lives without our dear boy.  He's a wonderful addition to our family!!

He is awesome with the "Leave It" command.  Our favorite is to stick a yummy on his paw and tell him to Leave It until we give him the Okay.

He got a new rawhide bone for his birthday gift, which he quickly proceeded to turn it to a nubbin.  He's quite the chewer!  But he was in seventh heaven while he chewed!

And, since he's a dog, we'll be enjoying a chocolate cake in his honor.  He gets a Busy Bone.    :D
