White Doberman Puppy
I've been trying to find a reputable white doberman breeder within driving distance from Chicago/Milwaukee or the Green Bay, WI area and haven't had any luck so far. I had a wonderful friend (white doberman) for eleven years and know I will never replace her but feel it is extremely important to see the parents, puppies, and environment a few times before purchasing. I would appreciate any suggestions.
Here is more information from the DPCA. While you may have had a good friend, but she had a problem. An albino is not a normal color because by definition it is in fact the lack of color. http://dpca.org/albino/albino_about.htm
I have to agree with Soleil, any breeder who purposely breeds and then sells an albino puppy is not a reputable breeder. A reputable breeder presented with an albino puppy, would ensure that the entire litter was spayed/neutered. I would also spay and neuter the parents as well. The dogs do not deserve recrimination, for they have done nothing wrong. In fact they should be perfectly acceptable and lovable pets.
Indeed. Breeding white (albino) Dobermans is irresponsible for two reasons.
1. In order to get white puppies you need to breed two carriers of the mutation, usually white Dobermans. This means when choosing breeding stock you have few choices if any choices. You have to take what you can get. So health and temperament aren't the goal - and is why white Dobermans suffer so many health and temperament problems. The also goes to a lesser extent for the fawn and blue colors.
2. Albinism is a disorder, it's not a coat color. Some albino Dobermans have blue eyes and some red. But both lack the protective pigment that protects their eyes and skin.
We had a rescue Doberman a few years back who was an albino. She was a sweetheart. Besides having trouble seeing outside she seemed perfectly healthy while she was here. She was great with people but went a little nuts around any type of other animal. None of this matters though, you can't judge a whole category based on one specimen.
Purchasing an albino Doberman would encourage bad breeder. I'd recommend contacting Doberman rescue. A lot of albinos end up there. People who buy them it seems are not only unaware of the damage it does to the breed, but also how to properly care for the breed.
Indeed. They are going for the rarity of the animal. They are collectors for the most part (not all) and when they discover that the Doberman is not like a toy that you can trot out to show and then put back in its place until you want it again, the get rid of it. The animal deserves much better than that.
Valeriemb, I hope we are not being too rough on you. What you adored about your companion was not the coat color, but the attributes of all well bred Dobermans. We jokingly call them "Velcro Dogs" because they stick to you. They are with you all the time. They are exceedingly intelligent and loyal. They are also protective of you and sense your mood. If they sense you are uneasy around a stranger, they will let the stranger know they are your protector. If they sense you like the stranger that approaches, they will greet the stranger pleasantly.
While many of us have raised (or are raising) our Dobes from young puppies, other have taken the challenge of either a re-homed Dobe or a Rescue Dobe. In some respects this is easier than raising a young puppy, and in other ways far more difficult because you have to overcome some emotional baggage the dog brings with them. From those who work with them say the rewards are great, because the dog gives more love and affection (after acclimating) because they know the conditions they came from. They know who their savior is.
While I favor the reds, many do not and therefore I drift more to the red. When I got Princess, she and her red littermate sister were the only ones left. Now it could have just been timing as I had to make the arrangements and then travel between winter snow storms hitting the upper midwest, which meant she was ready to leave the nest a week before I was able to make the trip. But most times the black are the most popular (and they are the most prevalent).
If you want a quality well bred Doberman, there are three breeders posting on this site, two with websites. None is a quantitiy breeder, but they go for quality. I drove 1800 miles (round trip) to get Princess, and in retrospect it was the best thing I have done. She is wonderful, but not a show dog, and probably not a breeder (she has a cowlick on her left shoulder that gives her character, but is a flaw). BTW - that breeder is the closest of the three to me.
You have to do what you are comfortable doing. We can only provide information and guidance. You may find a quality breeder closer to your, but it is unlikely you will find one advertising albino Dobes.
Please don't encourage the breeding of albino's there are already many in rescue that you can give a good home to. When I got my albino from rescue the breeder had given up his whole litter including the parents, both we're black dobermans and I think he was unaware that they both carried the recessive gene. His litter of 11 produced 2 albino's and the rest black, he surrendered all of them... that's eleven dogs competing for a good home, a shame really. Also the severity of the problems that come with albinism differs from dog to dog. Sometimes you get lucky. Unfortunately my pup is nearly blind in the sunlight.
There are no reputable breeders of white dobermans. This is a genetic trait along with other issues that reputable breeders strive to eliminate. You were indeed fortunate that you had an allegedly healthy White dob for all those years. I agree with what others have said; if you really want one go to a rescue shelter, do not purchase one to encourage these irresponsible breeders

I'm not trying to be rude here... but is this a trick question? Isn't there not such thing as a reputable white dobie breeder because white doberman is not recognized as a color by the DPCA and AKC due to the health problems with white dobermans. Check out the info on white dobermans on this website and see what they say ...
