Ok a friend of mine just adopted a new mix breed and he about three years old, or so they think. She told me that he has a decent recall when not destracred but seems to have a strong prey drive and if something runs he chases and the recall training goes out the window. she aslo asked me if I knew of anything she could do and unfourtunaletly with my dogs i never really had this issue with mine. So i thought I would ask all of you here for your opions and thoughts on the matter.

thank you to everyone for your advice and help in this matter.

I would start by not letting that dog off-leash.  If he's leashed then there's not a problem with recall.  Until you can control him they certainly don't need him running loose....

As for training start with a long lead so if they don't listen you can make them.  Never give a command you can't enforce and never repeat it over and over.  I tell Rocky once and the 2nd time I say it I'm making him do what I want.  Once they are confident he will come, give more leash...and more and then start adding in those distractions.   Start small....someone else in the yard with you maybe,  or outside while a neighbor is out or mowing or something.   Then take him somewhere else...the park etc. and work on it (keep him leashed the whole time)  eventually he will learn...he may not have gotten out much in his previous home so all these new things are more interesting than his owners right now.  Keep socializing him and working on it and he'll get it.

Read back over some of Kevin's posts - he's great with training tips...
