Need help with teaching Drop it
Haven't really posted on here for awhile, since Miss Athena is doing excellent. All up to date at the vet and ready to get spayed within the next couple of weeks, she is in great health. Her training is going well also, except for one little snag. She loves to go chase the ball or any toy for that matter and she will bring it back. However, she thinks it's another game for me to get it out of her mouth and throw it again. At first drop it was working and then it's like now she wants to play tug of war every time she brings a toy to me. I don't want to start endorse that game because of her strength, so does anyone have any ideas that worked well for their pup?
Good advice Paul.. the only way we could get Sofia to drop the mouse is to offer her a treat.
I PROMISE next time she has one, I'll get a picture of her cheeks all puffed out and the little tail dangling out of her mouth..
Mouse tar-tar...Flavor of the month
I used bait and switch when I wanted Fancy to drop a toy, exchange it for another one, as a game at first. You could treat when she lets go, saying "drop it". They can't eat with a tennis ball in their mouth! Fancy's not big on tennis balls anymore, but when she has something in her mouth that she shouldn't have, I always snatch up a toy on my way over to her to replace what she's got. Admittedly, her new treasure is much more interesting some of the time, but she knows the drop it command and is always rewarded for relinquishing it.
I'm so glad your little girl is back up to snuff! I've been wondering about her, and glad to see you back!
Wendy.. " bait and switch" LOVE IT!!
Mouse Tar-Tar....lol, around my house it would be Mt Doberman foundation.
Like Paul said... over and over... using the command til she gets the idea.
Two balls, new toy, Bait & switch...as long as the second she drops the object she hears the command and gets rewarded for it!
Awesome I will try some of them when I get home today, she's getting so big
I have noticed a recent change in her becoming more cuddly and her personality showing...of course she is a princess but she is a big baby too. This is a pretty recent picture from a few weeks ago, Danny's family got professional pictures done and the lady just had to snap a shot of what she called "the cute little family" LOL

How adorable you all are.. and IloveAthenatoo. what a bright little face.. looks to be like she's got a grat big secret she's keeping all to herself. What a darling! Thanks for the photo
That's a GREAT picture!!!!

This works for me: TWO tennis balls. Throw one, when she brings it back, tell her 'drop it', while showing her the other one. Praise her up BIGTIME when she drops the first one, and throw the 2nd one. Repeat over and over and over LOL
