Don Sullivan's "The Perfect Dog" ??
Curious, has anyone watched his training program on DVD? Anyone watch it and actually use it?
We had Samson spend a week one-on-one with a trainer. Don's method of training is pretty much the same as the trainer we used. So far I'm pretty impressed with it!
I am sending Cisco away for a 5 day crash course for some more manners. the girl there said she uses a similiar method and suggested getting the dvd's. I may just borrow my friends if he will let me... His dogs are angels..
Samson just turned 8 months. Isn't Cisco just a little older? From reading your posts, it sounds like Cisco and Samson are a lot alike. Someone called it "red male syndrome." So far I've worked with Samson on the leash exercises and it's working well. Samson is high strung and is an extreme puller on the leash. The trainer used a pinch collar on him and so he uses that during training. He's almost an angel with it on....it's amazing! lol
I actually thought about ordering this as well but didn't want to waste my money, so I also hired a PT. Maybe I will still order it just to get some other training ideas.
I call the prong collar Steve's "manners collar". When it is on, he is focused and working. You just have to learn the tactics that work for you and your dog... not every style of training works for every dog... but eventually you find out how to get through to your kids!
And training never stops just because they hit one year or two.. even my 7 year old needs to be reminded sometimes of his manners or some situation comes up where they need to be trained to handle it.
Yes Cisco will be 11 moths old on the 5th. Wow time flies. He and samson probably do have RMS!!!
I would say that Zelda has the "Red Female Syndrome" but I just know she's a prissy Princess :D In fact, when I brought her in this morning to let her do her business, I found her in the dog house where she kicked out the other three! XD She gave me a big yawn and groan before coming in lmao.
ANYWAY, I've never heard of this DVD... I could probably ask my parents to get one for me since they STILL refuse to let me go to obedience classes or hire a private trainer. Maybe they'll say yes to this!!

I've never watched his dvd's, but the videos I've seen online were alot of fluff, making things look better than they were, and he presented things in a way that made his techniques seem better than they actually were. I couldn't say if what he teaches works or not, because I've only seen a few online videos, and I'm not familiar with his techniques. But like I said, it was alot of fluff, seemed very gimicky to me. Also pretty misleading... The one that comes to mind is him teaching the names of objects, and telling the dog to go retrieve... The dog didn't actually know that names of the object, he simply used verbal markers to tell the dog which object to retreive. I'm not taking anything away from the fact that he was able to teach the dog to retreive objects based on verbal cues, that's pretty good. But again, it was very misleading, and seemed like it was being marketed to less experienced trainers.
If anyone gets any firsthand experience, I'd definitely be interested to hear their thoughts about his dvd's.
Kevin I felt that way too after I ordered and was a big part of why I didn't use it and sent it back. But seeing my freinds dogs amazed me. They are 3 of the most well behaved dogs I have ever seen. I think alot of it comes with the work you have to put into them with this video or anything else. Like your girl. You work hard, you have an amazingly well trained pup.
We purchased the set when we got our first dobe, Keiser, and i didnt find they were effective for him....first i wasnt strong enuff to make the nylon lead work....it was very frustrating for me....hubby could pull hard enuff to get his attention but i ended up selling it in the church garage sell :) i think you can get ideas from ppl here and search online and come up with effective training that will work for your dog....i feel the key is to find what works well with your dog....one size doesnt' fit all
They suggest pulling hard on a nylon lead? Curious, what for?
sorry....just found this again...yes on the pull....said you are to pull down with a jerking motion and its supposed to be like a pinch on the neck....he was a big boy and i never had any luck getting that to work for me....hubby said it was b/c i was afraid of hurting him...keiser would yelp when he did it and true enuff i didnt like that but honestly when i tried i had no effect
Dobes tend to shut down with harsh corrections of any kind. That's likely why it didn't work. This is definitely a breed that your better off using more positive methods. I would never use any method that involves using strength to overpower your dog. Fear or force based submission is a good way to get your dog to be miserable... I have seen quite a few dogs on youtube, that while they are extremely obedient and do exactly what they're told, they are simply not happy, and going through the motions.
i know....that's one of the problems i had with the trainer we sent him to for 6 weeks....he was rough in my opinion....he would grab the ears of the labs for one form of correction but of course he couldnt do that with major b/c his ears were taped....but on the other side of that i have noticed if you dont get firm with him sometimes he dont listen so im trying to find a happy medium
@rmk---your trainer sounds a lot like one I went to a few years ago with my Darmok. He advertised himself as an Ex-Army K-9 trainer and former Indianapolis Police Dept K-9 trainer. He actually was offering a 6-week basic obedience course (one hour per week) outdoors group class at our local YMCA one summer. I went, and there was about 12 other people that showed up with various breeds of dogs. After the 2nd week, there were only 7 people that showed up, and at the end of the 6 weeks, it was just me and my dobie, and two other people and their dogs. Nobody could stand this guy! This man was not only ROUGH---he bordered on cruel at times. At one point, he was trying to show some lady with a little fuzzy dog how to make it mind, and he actually grabbed the leash out of her hand and jerked the dog up off the ground by it's collar and leash and shook it. I was waiting for him to try something like that with me and my dog, so I could punch him out---but he admitted that he "liked" working with dobermans, and never attempted any of his macho mannerisms with my dog. I would never go to a trainer like that again for any amount of money.
There is definately a time and a place for a little rougher obedience training- but not for a general class! I cannot believe that guy Paul. I know Mr. G uses some "rough" love on the hard cases he has but he says it is the last method he would use after all other options fail. You don't do that in a general obedience course- Geezo

I ordered it and never used it and sent it back because i went to my local trainer. My friend has 3 dogs and used it on all of them and swears by it (he has a shi-poo, a beagle and a pointer mutt) All three of these dogs are very well behaved and listen very well.
