The Diva Finds a job
I guess the Swallows decided to stop in Bajamar on their way to San Juan Capistrano as there are thousands of them all happily making their nests on everyone’s houses.. they are carrying mud in their tiny mouths and applying it to any flat surface they can find. Last year when we bought the house we’ve been renovating.. we counted over thirty nests in light fixtures, and in every nook and cranny available to the tiny little guys.
Don’t get me wrong.. I love swallows, to watch them swoop and do their graceful aerobatics is amazing.. and word has it they are good luck.. One swallow is good luck.. thirty nests, eight eggs per nest.. doing the math.. I think that’s a little too much luck even for overachievers such as us. If we can get the nests down before there are ‘people’ in them.. fine.. if not…holy moly.. that’s a whole bunchalotta birds and their ‘evidence’.
We decided to give Sofia a job. Have been looking for the perfect chore for her, as all the fetching and carrying goes in one dober-ear and out the other. And wasn’t it someone on this forum who told me that Dobermans need jobs? And a tired puppy is a happy puppy ( see I read them !!)
With only a little direction she was able to stave off an entire flock. From inside the house as she was watching us paint, she could hear the churble ( it’s a word) of their arrival. ( remember they are carrying mud and sticks in their mouths getting ready to plaster the walls with it.. ) One little churble and up and out the door she would go.. racing full speed around the entire perimeter of the house.. and it’s a pretty big house.. never a woof.. never a growl.. just running as fast as she could corner and bracing herself as high as she could on the walls. The swallows never swooped her and were quick to warn the others to “flee… fly… go find another house in which to raise your children.. This one has a dog!”
I’ve never seen Sofia so focused and in touch with her working dog mentality.. what fun she had and I’ve posted some pictures for your amusement…
The Swallows were not amused….
I SEE YOU!!

You can run but you cannot hide!

I can stare you down if necessary

HaHAH!! Begone you tiny creatures!!

maybe they'e over here!!

Oh, how fun! It's so nice to see a job well done.
Elka loves watching birds. And helicopters.
Go Sofia!! LOVE the pics - especially the profile of her head. That's just beautiful.
Sofia is SUCH a beautiful girl, and seeing her enjoying her 'bird patrol duties' is amazing. We do cat patrol around my yard, so I know how focused they can get. GREAT photos, Kate.
Thank you guys!!
It was just so interesting to watch her get focused... All we said this morning is
"Time to go to work," and she nudged into her harness so she and Mike could bike over to the house.
Here she is flying out of the side door and wheeling around the corner full speed ahead.. Good thing the saltillo tile was not wet, she would have been spread eagled on the ground.
She's really taking this job seriously and does the prancy dancy thing after she shoos them all away. No treat is necessary... started out with a little biscuit... then after the eigth or ninth time of ''search and destroy" all she needed was a "GOOD JOB!!" I wonder if she remembers catching one like she did last year.It got trapped between Doberjaws and one of the sliders in the courtyard ( just like the baby bunny Lazarus) She handed it over to us.. the baby bird was still alive, albeit a bit soggy.. she's an amazing girl!

Gosh the Diva really is gorgeous! You can just see the intensity in her eyes, I would not want to be a swallow.
Love it Katie!!!!
I love it Kaitie... I can see it now... "Sofia's exterminating service... good results... great laughs (just don't tell her)"
Skye's new job is to "Kill the bugs". We didn't tell her to do this... but every bug in the house gets "eated" real quick... Skye sits next to my sis's bedroom window(their entrypoint) and eats the ones that dare enter... it's usually just moths but she got a ladybug yesterday.
Katie, I think she is prettier everytime we see a new photo! Love that face. High Five on the photos too!
Hey maybe you could charge people for her services....wait no we don't want it going to her head the the humans need her
Beautiful pictures glad she found something she loves to do.
Reminds me of Caine jumping in the air trying to catch pigeons flying at least 10 feet over his head, and running after the squirrels hoping that they would fall off the top of the fence.
great pics thanks for sharing
Aww Sophia...you are GORGEMOUS!!!!! I want to enjoy Sophie's puppyhood, but I can hardly wait to see her as an adult. The Diva knows her job, and she's doing it well! Wish we lived closer, would be fun to dress the girls up Friday to watch the wedding together!! Love & kisses Soph & Ang
Now THAT'S a dog on a mission! Maybe the Sparklets man will catch a break. She's so lovely Kate, great story. Thanks for sharing.
Katie, have been meaning to PM. On the run today. HOW and WHEN is the book coming????? Like the rest of our readers, I'm so eager to have a copy! It will be one of those special books that I will always hold very dear to heart..
Great photos!! I wouldn't wanna be on her bad side.
what a great idea....and she sure seems to love it :) she looks so proud of herself and very focused...
Katie, I'm with Barb, how is the book coming, and when can we get one? Love the pics.
chris... am working really hard on the book.. Just today I've finished a good start on the transition from the really dark and horrendous prologue revealing 'greeders' and how she got to us in Mexico..( many thanks to RnD ( Desiree) and of course my dear heart Jeshykai for the help on research and whelping). And what can go wrong ..
I've been in tears all day as it's heartfelt and difficult, yet the ending is a happy one and hopefully people will not only like it, they will learn something from this wonderful breed we call Doberman
P.S. I wrote the 'happy' first.
