I'm with Allstate, apparently the doberman is one of six dogs they dont insure, and they are comparable to Rotweilers and Pit Bulls.

No notice, no nothing just a letter and a refund stating they will not provide home insurance if there is a Doberman on the residence.

Nice.

I'm so sorry to hear about your insurance, that is so not fair. We have always had State Farm and they have a 1 incident bite policy, they insure all the breeds (not sure about pit bulls not that matters for you) until they have 1 bite . You might want to try with them.

I found this article on dog bite statistics. It's short and to the point.

http://ezinearticles.com/?Top-Biting-Dog-Breeds&id=1407118

Dobermans are mentioned only because they were bred to be a guard/protection dog
and if/when they do bite it causes serious injury. Your insurance company is very ignorant
regarding dogs. They should be cancelling anyone with a dog on the list in that article.
But, then again, what would you expect from an insurance company owned by KMART?

We are insured through Allstate as well.  Did you tell them you had a dog?

I'm hoping the "what they don't know won't hurt us" will work for us.

Clearly, they are ignorant people who've never had the pleasure of having a doberman in the family.

Yea, That really sucks.  I did some research of my own and the majority of insurance companies have their list of "bad breeds" that is no way thought through by anyone.  Where are the dachshunds or Chi's on these lists.  Those are the most vicious dogs out there in my eyes.  Labradors are also known to snap at people, yet that's what most families get when they get a puppy for the family.  I think they came up with these with no research done at all. I have always owned the biggest of dogs and the ones you have to watch out for are the little ones.  Min Pins are nowhere on anyones list? that's just crazy.

I told my wife about this and she said the same thing as you xanders mom, so why tell them obviously they are uneducated decisions.  By the way Xanders ears look good.  Dobies look silly when they have not yet grown into their ears, but cute and menacing.  He looks like he might be a handful...

Many years ago when I lived in Virginia, I would board my Dobes with a local kennel and they got along well with the owner. In fact, she even boarded my first female when she was very pregnant near year end. I did get back before she delivered, Where did she board Windy - in her home next to the kennel.

One weekend she had my Dobes in the run closed to the office door. When you walked you walked up to the first pen and turned right to go into the door. Windy and Hans were together in that pen. She had a man walk and and ask whey she boarded those vicious dogs! She had to ask him what she was talking about, and he pointed to my two "vicious" dogs who were sitting there quietly. She told him off, pointing out that she had been bitten by many dogs, but never by a Doberman who were generally well behaved. She pointed out that the dog most likely to bite was a Chihuahua and the bite rate for them at the kennel was almost 100%. She said he could have the biting Chihuahuas and she would take those good natured Dobermans. She held up her hand with a band aid and said "I got this from your dog this morning."

He paid his bill, picked up his Chihuahua and left.

We have insurance with Progressive and they guy was very friendly and asked do you have any pets?  and I said yes two dogs and a cat and he asked what kind and when I said doberman he said that dog is on the list and our insurance will cost a little more because of her.  I was surprised and thought it was stupid.  I have never heard of a dog attack that involved a doberman.

That is until you need to file a claim and the police report states "doberman"...  I'm not saying your dog would be involved in an altercation, but IF he/she was, Allstate would pull out he fine print and you wouldn't be covered.

If I were you, I'd find a new insurer who covers Dobes.

Check State Farm Insurance, that is who I have. They deal on the merit of the dogs and if there have been any incidents- no incidents, no problem. Many insurance companies have there "hot lists" based solely on the breed of the dog.  Several states now have pending legislation prohibiting insurance companies from this type of discrimination.

I was just curious to read other threads. Why would anyone care about what kind of dog you have? People need to quit giving dogs such a bad rap!!

Hi Kotes, try Alfa Insurance. That's who I have. When I knew that I will be getting dog, I emailed them and asked if I need additional insurance. My agent replied that Dobermans are not on the vicious dog list and I do not need additional insurance. If something happens my regular homeowner's will cover it.

Insurance is a product, shop for it and get the best one that works for you.

Just remember if your company is one of the unenlightented ones, there are plenty that will accept Ludo.

That is true, but it is not for them to prove the dog is a doberman, they just refuse you cover you until you prove it is not. Innocent until proven guilty only works in criminal trials, not in insurance coverage requests.

Fortunately, there are enough apparently that don't have problems with Dobies. I have not listed my insurance company, USAA, because it is a closed mutual company whose membership is limited to military personnel of E-6 and above, active duty, former members and retired.

Here in Taxachusetts, when you get your dog his required rabies shot they forward the certificate, which includes the breed, to each town hall.So not only are you required to license your dog,but there is also a record of what breeds you currently own.

In other words,if you are irresponsible, and don't bother with vaccinations or vet visits, you're safe. But if you try to do what's best for your dogs, each city tracks you down and sees to it that you pay.

Here in S. Georgia, in my county, there is no registration and no leash law. Now in the city, there is. People laugh at me when I say that I had to move out of the "big" city (under 40,000 at the time). Country living is great, but if you let your animals run loose, they are at risk from the vehicles.
