Picking out my puppy from the litter what should I look for?
My husbnd informed me last night that he has been working on getting me a Dobie puppy and I get to go pick which one I want from a litter. are there certain aspects I should be looking for? I have been reading the website and am amazed at all the information here. any advice?
Thanks for the links I will check them momentarily..
The breeder is a close friend of my husband who has been breeding for years and he takes very good care of his family members (his dogs). The parents are on property very happy, well adjusted and very well trained. They also have 2 young children in the home with the puppys.
The Dam is a Red and the Sire is a Blue.. Im so excited and I really cant wait..
Thanks so much...
;)This made me laugh this morning on what to look for in a puppy. Although i had a list of stuff to ask. Q came and sat on my foot and I was sold.
I met Q's dam who was very striking. Q came partly out of a test tube :) Q's sire was a champion in America (apparently)named Mannerheims don giovanni. I would love to track down a picture to see if Q looks anything like him. :)
Here is a link to Dobequest it will show the all the info available (at least that someone has entered) of Mannerhims don giaovanni, and if you click on picture it shows a moving picture of him in the show ring. If you have problems with the link let me know. http://www.dobequest.org/profile.php?DOGID=4551&DOBEQUEST=913833aa5f60ea...
Gosh! Thank you for that, I think that Q has his nose :) I can also save it to my computer. I wonder how many pups of his are all around the world? And thinking more..if its not inappropriate is there a sperm bank for dogs?
No problem, if they have an email address of the owner you could email them and see if they had any more pictures of him.
Yes, they do have sperm banks for dogs LOL.
:)No address on the site, but i bet i could find one now i have more information. From a curiosity sake it does make you wonder about the viablilty of the sperm. I see that Giovanni was born in 1995 so i imagine he was used as a stud at around age 5? That makes his sperm 10 years old :) Im also guessing that there are all sorts of things in place to ensure that this really is giovanni's sperm. I'm a nurse....maybe im just thinking too much :)

I'm not sure about dogs, but I have friends in the cattle business and they have frozen bull semen in a nitrogen vault at their home. A lot of it is more than a decade old. As long as it stays frozen in Nitrogen it will not have an expiration date.
I know at one time the AKC would not recognize artificial insemination. I do not know when they changed their position but it has apparently been some time.
Hmm I guess thats also true with human beings as well when you come to think about it :) I guess the long journey and delivery to NZ is not a problem as we are 12 hours in front...so the package will arrive before it is sent. 'winks'

Assuming you've chosen a quality breeder, the breeder will be the best judge of which puppy would be best. If you let the breeder know your living situation, your activities you plan with the dog, and anything else you can think of - the breeder will be able to choose the puppy showing the most ideal temperament for you.
Don't believe all the silly "puppy tests" and other odd ideas out there. Unless you're choosing a puppy for protection work there's little you can do besides choose a good breeder to get a healthy puppy with a healthy temperament.
AND - if you find that one of the puppies come right to you, and you feel the puppy has "chosen" you, don't get too excited. This little rascal is most likely the most dominate and energetic one of the bunch and "chooses" everyone he meets. ;)
Just make sure you meet that parents and find them healthy and friendly OFF leash. Make sure the puppies have been raised in the home (basements and attacked garages don't count).
