Just how acute is a dogs hearing?
we were sitting on the dunes this morning for our halfway mark rest. I like to watch the oyster catchers for a while. :) Q normally just likes to burrow under my knees and will then lay down.
For some reason he sat up in an incredibly alert state and stood in his dobie stance...I looked left and right...not a soul on the beach.
Then I looked out to sea to see a pod of orcas in the distance heading north. I kept Q on his leash for our return walk home lol Ive seen how those beauties can grab seals I didn't want Q to be a light snack for one of them.
I wondered if Q actually heard them or just saw them before I did? Normally I can step over Q in the night without him waking from his sleep. Can dogs hear sonar? :)
Thanks for that :) I can pull up to the house after an evening shift, enter the front door, pull down blinds,,,,and q carries on snoring, ;) But i did have a google yesterday and they say dogs hearing is 80% better than ours. Im such a light sleeper I have to wear ear plugs :)
Drive up in a strange vehicle sometime and open the door and you will be greeted by Q at the door. They can also tell one vehicle from another, even if the same model and engine. They are very intelligent.
:) Agreed... Q can even tell the difference between the dog shampoo bottle and a detergent bottle. He rolled in dead bird this morning and is already hiding at the end of the garden. Bathtime ;)

You just think that Q does not hear you at night. He hears you and processes it as a normal sound and does not react. Soldiers in combat after a while act the same way. A normal sound will not "wake" them, but an abnormal sound will.
Yes, there hearing is very acute. In the evening I will quietly walk into the kitchen in the evening thinking I have not disturbed Princess, only to turn around and see her looking at me. Her only movement was to open her eyes. When she sees me looking at her she will then raise her head.
Q probably actually heard their calls, although you cannot. Not only is their hearing more sensitive, they can hear a far higher frequency than we can. Some dog whistles are silent to us, but not to them.
