Getting Grey?
So many of you have had dobermans from puppy hood on up. When did you notice them getting grey around their muzzles?
So far Sofia has none, but not being sure how old she is, I thought that might be an indicator.
Hmm. Interesting question. I never really noticed mine getting that gray. I do recall in his older years, Hans had some gray on his muzzle, but he was almost 12 years old when I lost him. I just checked Red, and he has no signs of gray and he recently turned 7. I finally found the photo I was looking for of Gretyl who was over 8 years old at the time of the photo. She was clear eyed and no signs of gray on her muzzle.
I think the fact that the area of the muzzles that would show the gray is rust colored and that may slow down the appearance of gray for a while. I know Labs, especially the black ones tend to start showing gray by the time they are six or seven.
In the case of HRH, the fact that she is an Isabella which has an overall frosting of her undercoat may mean she never shows gray. What a lucky girl!
Thanks ya'll
I guess I will never know just how old Miss Priss is ( and that makes sense as a lady never tells)
She's outside with her gal pal rolling around like a wanton strumpet right now.. they dug up the yard to the point where the holes are deep enough to hide in.. Good thing we're buying a new house.

You certainly have a way with words. ;D

It really varies. Some lines don't get really grey, some within the same family group do while others don't.
I've got two 11 year old sisters that aren't very grey. Sure, they have some but you'd never guess they were 11. I had their half sister, too, who passed away at 12 and she also wasn't very grey. Actually, she had the most grey in the hairs on the bottom of her feet and you'd see it as she trotted away from you - lol.
Meanwhile, my 4th litter turns 8 today. The litter consisted of just 2 girls, one red and one black. They are granddaughters of the 12 year old I mentioned, and both of them have much more grey now than she did then. I lost their mother at 9 (osteosarcoma), and she wasn't very grey. I guess the two are taking after the sire's side.
I've lost 2 others at 11, a red male and a red female. Both had some grey but not what I'd consider a lot. I've seen some seniors whose tan faces were almost all grey.
