i currently have a 15 1/2 month old bitch spayed doberman and a labrador, the dobe is mine, the lab is the familys but both live together i am 18 and getting my own place very shortly and wanting another doberman my family knows this and is fine with it but could you please tell me should i get a male or a female pup? also is there alot of difference in height and weight in the male compared to the bitch?

im currently living in uk so will be going to n.ireland to get my pup (still legal to dock there tails in n.ireland)

You didn't mention whether the Lab is male or female?  And whether the new Doberman would be expected to spend time with that dog once you move out?

Males are generally about 2 inches taller than the females and about 15-20 lbs heavier.  That's very general as there can be a big range in size.

Pet Profiles

The males are not only a little taller and longer, they have greater bulk. On average, a male the is the proper weight will weigh about 10 pounds more than a female. Now I have had males smaller than some of my females, but on average they are larger.

Now, adding the second Dobie, either male or female, will complicate your life. They are large boistrous dogs and like to play rough. This is fine outdoors, but inside can be a challenge, especially if you don't stay on top of them. You will definitely have to "dog proof" the house.

You state that you are not working, yet you want to add the strain of another large mouth to feed? You may want to wait until your working situation is a little more stable.

I would be wary of getting a Doberman puppy around the old female Doberman. Doberman puppies have a nasty habit of demanding rough play from other dogs, and that's very hard on old dogs. If you don't stay on top of the puppy ALL THE TIME, either the old dog will get exasperated or she'll start sinking teeth into the puppy.

Alpha Admin:  If you relook the original post, I believe the Op said that the dobe is roughly a year and a half (15 months)--I would hardly call that an old dobe.  A dober teen--absoulutely.
