Last night Mike and I were sitting outside, Sofia snoozing a couple of yards away under some palm trees) We were discussing our will ( HAVE to have one in Mexico and besides that .. it's a good idea for everyone.) but I digress. We had gone to the Notario ( lawyer-ish guy) and had it outlined and were going over the fine points..
I asked him... "if something happens to both of us what will happen to Sofia?"
She got up and came over and looked at me and leaned...hard. And you guys remember the thread on Smart Bumps?? and I stated that whenever Sofia gets upset one appears? Well it wasn't as 'smart' as Rocky's..but I PROMISE it was there.. She can't possibly understand the words that were spoken.. but from five yards away felt the tension and the sadness and BEGGED us not to send her to his sister!!
Her head is as flat as a pancake most of the time.. ( well not my pancakes.. but I'm digressing again) but every once in a while.. up it pops. Does anyone know what causes that??

It may just be her muscles are more tense around her face and you're noticing that.  The bone structure wouldn't change.

Poor Sofia she is so in tuned to you guys.  She has plenty of Dober-relatives that I know would take her in and give her lots of love (us included).  Tell her not to worry.

She rather likes the idea of Camp Jessica!! Thanks sweetness... it's not a subject that is easy to discuss, but vital for everyone. I know with parrots, one must make provisions for them as they tend to outlive their owners.... but it's important to have all affairs in order for peace of mind and security no matter what you're circumstances are.

Most of us think we'll live to be 80-90 etc..and "there's always time for that" But there are accidents and our precious lives can be taken in an instant. Create a will. Have your t's crossed and i's dotted and for goodness sake, straighten up that sock drawer

Yes ma'am! I plan to once we're married and baby is here.  Dogs included in it!!  My family can not be uprooted so whoever gets Peanut has to take Miles.. Steve and Stella together...

And yes, Camp Jessica would take her in a heartbeat and she'd probably sulk for having too many roommates.

That girl and her instincts!  She's incredible Kate, she really is.  Not a fun topic to discuss, but a necessary one, absolutely.  I actually was thinking the other day about who Dakota's godparents should be, should it ever come to that(and lets pray it never does!).  It is a hard choice...

Ahh parrots! My wife has two,a cockutoo and an African Grey..........She better hope I go first, for their sake.

Strange you mention this today Kate,I got a call this morning that my grandfather passed away today. He was 88!It wasn't a terrible shock,he's been declining rapidly the last year and his mind has been gone for a while. It did sort of put a period at the end of the sentence though.

Everyone had already left for work and school when mom called with the news.I looked at Brody and just decided to take him for a walk.We left the girls home and just kept walking.I followed an old railroad line converted to a bike/walking trail. It was terrific!I thought of the good times,(we did so much together)cried a little and just reflected on it all. Before I knew it we must have walked several miles. We stopped at a bench by a lake and sat  for a while. He was just the perfect companion!Quiet and gentle, like he knew I was not quite myself.I couldn't have asked for a better companion to share my grief with.Walked back home and turned on the computer and found your post.

There really can't be too much to be sad about.Like you said, most people expect to live until 80-90 years old.He made it all the way to 88!! God bless him.

Anyway, while I was sitting there admiring my companion,I thought of taking some pics to share. Not the best,I only had my cell phone.....Oh and I'd be more than happy to take in the Diva too.But she would have to become a Patriot.

Oh wow.. I am so sorry for your loss... No matter how we justify things, it's still so so sad.

I will keep you in my prayers

and OMG That Brody is absolutely magnificent.. It's been a while since I've seen a head shot of him and he is all grown up.. He has that regal and 'all knowing' look that Dobermans get. They are such a comfort, I'm glad he was there for you and will be in the days ahead

Very sorry to hear that, Pat :(  But you're right, he led a full life.  At Ray's Grandma's funeral a few years ago, one of his aunts said something that really stuck with me - she said that if her mom was still there she would tell everyone not to mourn her death but to celebrate her life.

Sounds like you had a very good walk with Brody. They always seem to know when we need comfort, don't they?  I always find a good walk to a quiet place really helps.  Hugs to you and the family! xoxo

Glad Brody was there for you too Patriot.

They are good friends to us.

My grandpa died at 85 was sick for a long while. Still, reflecting on his life was sad but happy.

Take care of yourself and keep the dogs close.

Sorry for your loss, Mark.  It's amazing how our dobermans sort of pick up on our feelings and emotions and know when they need to be there to comfort us.

Patriot, so sorry for your loss.  You are in our prayers.  Great that you had Brody, they are always there when you need them.  He is one handsome fella.

Kate, When we had to choose someone to care for our kids if something happened to us, we made sure they would take the dog and cat too.  That's how we got our third cat, he belonged to my Mom and Dad before they passed.  Oh, and Tony said he would love another sister!

Red had one as well. All Dobermans should have the "intelligence" bump, some more pronounced than others and most of the ones with really pronounced ones (like Rocky's 'horn') are males.

The wills are important for all.

Paul - Brody is gorgeous. His reaction to you and Sofia's to Kate and Mike are excellent examples of the sensitivity of these wonderous creatures we share our lives with. Sometimes, I think they are almost human with the feeling they emote with body and facial language. They can't speak verbally as we do, but they can sure get the message across.

I have notices more and more that Princess has taken on the role that Red had. That of main protector and the one who follows me everywhere. She previously took more of a secondry role, as he would stand by a window and bark, she would stand behind him. Now it's her at the window barking, she's the one chasing the squirrels, she's the one that follows me everywhere. Just now as I went in to get another cup of hot choclate, as I was leaving the kitchen she led part way, then stopped and looked back to make sure I followed her back into the computer room. She now carries a sqeeky toy with her everywhere, almost like Red carried his Kong (she doesn't do Kongs). Maybe she views that as her "mace" denoting her new position.
