Dobes noses under water?
Hi, long time no see. I was just reading the posts about dobermans swimming and read that they don't usually like to get their noses wet. My Tara (past beloved dobe) didn't like the Gulf of Mexico and would end up clawing me to death to get out. Okay--that was normal it seems. But she had this one peculiar trait--whenever she went to take a drink out of the bucket in the yard, she would put her snoot in all the way until the water would almost reach her eyes and then she would drink. So I wonder why she freaked out about the ocean so much. I never did take her in too deep.
Just joined this message board and am so happy to find it!! Our rescued doberman ( Sofia) dunks her nose all the way to the bottom of her bowl when she drinks.. it's like she's bobbing for apples.. Have never seen a dog do this. She is a delight and after some scary health problems. ( she was abandoned and had just littered..) no one knew what happened to the pups.. but she mourned to the point of refusing food or water.. dropped 20 pounds in a week and would take each of her new toys upstairs one by one and place them at her belly to nurse.. Heart rending!! After feeding her steamed rice, boiled chicken and some hard boiled egg whites for a week, vitamin and appetite enhancers, she was back to her 100 pound self. She is now a dream dog, chases rabbits and runs two miles a day! The toys have become play things, not puppies.. Sofia has changed my life and we aDORE her!
You have as much of a winner as she does. I think she knows that and is appreciative of your rescue. They are very intelligent and understand far more than most people know, but of course you are familiar with that.
I remember taking a trip to see my late sister many many years ago. She had a black Dobe female (Gretyl) from my first litter (1984) and I had gone back to visit. I took both my Dobes with me, and was staying with my parents on the trip. While there I went over to visit my sister and her family and took my red male (Hans) with me. Hans was Gretyl's sire and as soon as we pulled into the drive and opened the door she started yipping in the back yard. Even through the wooden fence they recognized each other even though it had been several years since they had seen each other.

I have never seen any dog stick their nostrils under water. That is definitely different.
