Doberman Pinscher Ears
:)Hi, It seems to me that there is no broad agreement as to the best timing for ear cropping. Some say 8 to 9 weeks old pup , others 11 to 12 weeks. What is the current, majority, opinion?
Another question: can anybody reccomend a vet in the Pittsburgh PA or North / West PA areas that specializes in Doberman ear cropping?
I don't think you'll ever get a consensus on it.
I take my puppies for their first vaccinations at about 7 1/2 weeks since current literature says they have their dam's immunity until 8 weeks. I then schedule cropping for about a week after the vaccinations. I want them to have at least some vaccine protection before I have to leave them at a vet's office for a day to have their ears cropped. That's my reasoning and practice.
This might be late, but the vet that has cropped both my dobies is in Canal Fulton (Akron/Canton) and I have been very happy with his work
Could you give me the name of your vet in canal fulton. I am looking for a good crop vet in ohio.
Jhay, I sent his info as a personal message to you. He does great work! Let me know if you have problems getting the info.
I have three male dobermans. One has perfect ears, one has uncropped ears and one was given a "show" crop which didn't take. They were just too big to stand no matter what I tried. My question: he is now two years old. Is he too old to have them recropped???? I just feel so bad when I look at him with the "bat" ears bent in half.
If the ears are creased, according to my vet, nothing other than implants can help. Here is a link to a thread showing my now 7 year old red male with a creased ear [url=http://www.gentledoberman.com/forum]http://www.gentledoberman.com/forum]. Since I was not going to show him, why put him through that? He does not care if one ear does not stand.
If neither ear is creased, but just down, then you may want to try posting again. It may work or may not. The longer the cut, the more trouble it is to get them to stand, but the longer ears do look good.
You probably quit posting to soon many people do especially with the longer crops. With show crops I've seen some people having to post using different methods for a year. If he is 2 years old now it is probably to late, I cant imagine it would work. About the only thing you could do now is an implant.
Thanks much. Maybe I'll just leave them the way they are. Why put him through all that? My youngest has uncropped ears and is so adorable. I love them no matter what they look like.

Since I'm in S. Georgia, I can say about the vet in Western Pennsylvania, but as to the timing, it actually varies by pup. Let the vet decide when it is best based on the growth and thickness of the ears. Take the pup in at 8 weeks and let the vet examine the ears and decide when he needs to see the pup again.
In my case, I took Princess in to my vet at 9 weeks as soon as I got back with her. He spent about 5 minutes feeling the ears and the growth of the cartilage and then wanted me back in about 2 weeks. On the second visit, he again examined her ears and scheduled her back in one week for the surgery. They turned out great. He has done 7 of my dogs over the last 15 years.
