With the recent passing of our families 15 year old Husky we adopted Selene from a local pound. I had been reading about the Doberman breed and was very impressed by what most all of the owners had been saying.

She weighed 34 lbs when we got her and has been estimated to be about 5 months old.  She is intelligent, submissive and is a joy to train, walk and play with. Her name came from Kate Beckinsale's character in the Underworld movies.

Since being with us she has gained about 8 lbs and her ribs are no longer showing. We have her trained to ring a bell to go outside and she will happily go in her crate if you walk her to it.

She does have one problem that I will post about in the behavior forums but for now here are some pictures.

Red & rust, nothing but the best! I'm just a little bias. I like the doorbell routine. Sage will bump the back door knob (like a dolphin) when he needs to go potty. However, he gets all the credit on that one. Sounds like a win-win situation with the Dobe being adopted & you gaining the best breed dog on the planet. Again, just a little bias.

Indeed you did adopt the best breed in the world, facts are facts.  I also would like to give kudos for rescuing this pretty little girl.  She looks very sweet and very alert.  Watchout squirrels.

When she is tired she likes to suck on her blanket.  She fell asleep while doing it in this picture.

Wow what a difference. Just a lot of love and some food works wonders. What a wonderful looking girl. I know you are very proud of of her, and I know she is grateful for how you have helped her.

And your reward is a loving companion who will keep you company and protect you. Thank you for sharing this update with us.

If you saw the picture with her looking straight at the camera, and no other, you would never know how far she has come.

The blanket she has in the latest pictures is the same blanket we used to cover the carseat when we brought her home from the pound. I like to think it means something to her :)

There is also a remote possibility that a playmate may be in her future and I was wondering how well do spayed females get along with each other?

females in general usually get along fine, it's males in the dominent breeds that don't usually do well with other un-neutered males.  There is always the fight for Alpha...

You should be fine with femails but introduce them first and make sure.  It wouldn't be the first time someone brought home a dog their existing dog just hated.  Make sure the introduction is done right because you can't undo it once they have already met and have problems, it's harder to fix.

I think it all depends on your dog and of course the new one.. not to mention you.

Sofia claims to be 'an only child' and is quite possesive of hearth and home when we introduce a new kid on the block. She is gracious and friendly as long as they don't come near her toys, her food, her parents or her sofa. She doesnt' growl or snap... just takes a stance that lets the newbie know that is out of bounds. She WILL share her water..

I've read from rgreen that rescues have abandonment issues and are more insecure than others. They feel they will be replaced..

thoughts?

Let me tell you a little about what this girl is like:

My wife works at a vet and will frequently take Selene to work with her. She will bark when someone comes in the door but will do fine once she meets the person that came in. She also does well with the strange dogs after she has met them. Once at work she wants to be everywhere my wife is and has to be by her side anywhere in the building. If she isn't, she isn't happy.

The vet owns a large mature neutered yellow lab. The lab and Selene get along just fine and she likes to play and lick his face. If he pays no attention to her she will stick her butt in his face. We are not really sure what that is about :)

Judging by her behavior she considers me her alpha. She listens to me and obeys pretty well. If I verbally correct her she will either sit and lay her ears back or lay down and roll over on her back. I like to think that my training with her is somewhere between the dominance of Cesar and the positive reinforcement of Victoria Stilwell. I expect the dog to listen and she is handsomly rewarded when she does.

We have taught her several commands and tricks. If you ask her to do something she will normally do it on the first try. If you have a treat in your hand and don't say anything she will usually do all of her tricks and then sit there and wait for the treat.

My wife is more of her playmate. My wife likes to get down on the floor and wrestle with the dog. We assume that by doing this she has taught the dog to be a playmate. While it isn't much of a problem now sometimes I think it could be. She doesn't listen to my wife very well.

At bedtime you can walk her to her crate and she will happily go in. She doesn't bark in her crate at night unless she hears something outside.

Our cats really do not like her. She doesn't pay them much attention usless she is excited and one of the cats makes a sudden move. My daughters are cat lovers so you can imagine how well that works. We took her to a professional trainer and all he wanted to do was shock her when she appraoched a cat. We didn't do that because we didn't want a dog that is fearful of a cat but we want one that will peacefully coexist with cats.

If we let her outside to play in the yard she will normally stay on the back porch until one of us goes outside with her so she can play frisbee.

We don't know her exact age but she seems small. The pound said she was around 5 months and she weighed 34 lbs when we got her. When we took her to the vet he guessed it was closer to a year based on the tarter that had accumulated on her teeth. She probably weighs about 40 lbs or so now and still seems to have a fair amount of puppy in her.

Flycutter, OMG Selene is so gorgeous!!!  You rescued an incredible beauty!  She sounds like she is really well behaved for a younger dog!.  Ginger six years old and only 45 lbs., so Selene will probably not get much bigger and that is fine.  It is a very manageable size.  Ginger doesn't try to eat our cat, however, her idea of play is too rough for the cat's liking.  He stays out of her reach.  Thanks for the updated pictures. It is amazing how much she has grown.  I love the picture, "the ride home."  What a sweetie bear!

So after having Selene for a while we were so impressed by the intelligence and loyalty of the breed that we decided to rescue one more. After all, Selene does need a playmate.

After checking all the rescues we found Max in Indiana. It would be a very long drive but after speaking with his foster we felt it was worth it. We took Selene with us to make sure Max was the right one and she slept the entire way except for rest breaks.

This is Max and he is 16 months old. I don't have a lot of pictures of him yet so these are the ones when we found him on petfinder.

His name was Max but he is just a big teddy bear so he got the name Teddy. Based on what his foster home told us and judging from his scars he has had a rough life but he's home now. Teddy is good and knows basic commands but needs work on his leash walking. My only concern were his hips and they checked out fine.

God bless you for rescuing this angel - what a win, win situation.  They are beautiful together. Ginger has Lexie (Am. Eskimo) or vise versa and they are good buddies.  I love to watch them communicate.

He's a fine looking dog and he must feel so relieved to have a home.  He reminds me of the Dobie on Angel Eyes  How long was he in foster? Selena is growing and looking great as well!

@bbroyles
Teddy was in foster for about 4 weeks. We were told the original owner lost his home and his 3 Dobes went to rescues.

@Lady Kate
I would say Selene is 8 months to a year old right now. We got Selene around the end of June and the pound estimated her to be about 5 months old. Based on the amount of tarter on her teeth when we got her our vet thought she might be closer to a year old.

Overall I would say Selene and Teddy are doing great together. There have been some issues over who owns what toy but nothing major. This is the first time we have ever had two dogs at the same time and I am trying to figure out what is play and what isn't. For right now I don't leave them unsupervised outside for very long. If they are outside together I am with them.

When I let them have toys outside Selene will usually grab one and take off running with Teddy in hot pursuit. If Teddy catches her he will reach for her and she does have one or two teeth marks on her hind quarters. This worries me a bit but it has never escalated and they haven't left marks on each other when standing still. I don't think Ted means to break the skin and this just happens because they are running wide open.

When he is inside Teddy is the perfect dog. Even though Selene is constantly nagging him to play he does nothing but kick back and relax. But once he gets outside he is ready to play and gives Selene payback for all the nagging he gets while trying to rest.

Selene has this certain behavior that I really don't know how to describe so I will just spell it out. When they are outside she will stand next to Teddy and lift her leg and put "it" right in Ted's face, sometimes he likes it and sometimes he doesn't. We don't really know if this is a dominance thing or she is just being a flirt. Any help here would be appreciated.

ShibaDobie - Since they are standing next to each other I would assume a foreleg. That is unusual behavior. Even if it is a rear leg, that is very unusual for a female. If it were Teddy raising a rear leg toward Selene, the we all know what that means. He's claiming her.

Dobies play rough, very rough. It is not unusual for them to leave a few "fang marks" on one another. Princess and Red usually have a few. Most often I feel them when petting them and I feel the scab under the fur. When the scab comes off the fur comes with it and there is a little round spot until the fur grows back.

In 28 years I only really had problems with my first female (Windy, my avatar) and my first male whom I got as an 8 week old puppy when Windy was about 2 years old. She would on occassion leave wounds that had to have stitches. I would say that it was about three or four times, but that did not start until after he was 1 year old and had sired his first litter with her (not planned, I was inexperienced and did not realize a 10 month old puppy could sire a litter. I found out different).

Red and Princess love to chase each other outside and knock each other down and play fight. It looks like they are really fighting but without any wounds.

Cisco9510 - stepdobie - that's a new one.
