I'm new here and this is Rufus. We were told he was a Dobie/Lab mix when we got him 6 weeks ago. Our trainer thinks its Dobie/Pit and encouraged us to do dna testing just out of curiosity. Not sure if we will. We think he's about 7 months old. This is our first time getting an older pup and our first with Doberman in it. He has stolen my heart already. He's been with us 6 weeks and is extremely bonded with me and starting to bond with our 15yo son.

When we got him we thought he was possibly abused as he was petrified of men. It took two weeks for him to not bark and be scared of my husband. He loves my dh to pieces now. Our older son he still isn't sure of but to be honest son is kind of a jerk when he's home (19yo boy who wants his own dog but doesn't have time). The more we have gotten to know Rufus and he us we have decided that the issue is he has never been exposed to much of anything. He has come so far in the 6 weeks we've had him.

He has been to the mountains, Lowes, Petsmart, and just on rides in the truck. He loves to go places with me. Haven't seen any aggression towards other dogs or people, just fear. When you give him a little time though he warms up. He's great with our other dog too. She's an older pyr mix and is definitely an alpha dog. She has put our dd's rottie and other dd's german shepard in their places many times over the years. She is actually enjoying playing with Rufus. We were worried she would not accept him and get tired of him after a week or so. But she seems to really enjoy their play time every morning.

He does have some separation anxiety. We know that we are at least his 3rd home so I guess its to be expected. He howls and cries when I leave. He's not a velcro dog he's a superglue dog when I'm home. Thankfully there are only a couple times  a week I am gone.

Yesterday morning before daylight I had a lamp on and he suddenly saw my reflection in the window. He thought someone was outside so he came and barged into my lap and sat facing the window barking and growling. It took me a few minutes to figure out what he was growling at and then a few minutes to quit laughing before I could show him it was ok and there was nothing out there. He really is a goofball sometimes!

Oh and Rufus weighs about 50 lbs and is about 21 inches tall and we don't think he'll get much bigger.

Pretty sure he's not full doberman as he's only 53 lbs and probably 7months old. His history is a mystery sadly.

No experience raising male Dobermans but used to keep charts / files on my females weights as they grew up. Would be very unusual to see a female that heavy at that age in my experience. That is close to 'full grown' weight for some females and they usually do not get to full grown weight until about 1 1/2 to 2 yrs old...

7 months is young. He still has some growing to do.

Either way, that is a fine looking dog and you should be very proud of the new member to your family! Wishing you the best of luck and many years with him. :)

Not that it always works out the same way but... I did see a Lab / Doberman mix one time up close and the coat was a dead giveaway to the Lab being tossed into the mix. Yours appears to have more of the traditional Doberman coat that one would expect to see. Much more easy to keep clean and care for than the longer hair coats on Lab type dogs in my opinion.

would love to see a couple more pictures that show a bit more of him - like a profile picture taken at shoulder level.

Oh yeah, I definitely see either pit or Lab in him.  To really know which, I'd do one of those DNA tests..... they are not always very accurate though.  He is a nice looking boy and definitely has a good amount of Doberman in there.
