i have been recently visiting many doberman breeders and pet shops .. every one is asking me to take a male doberman instead of a female one. when i asked one breeder why shouldn't i take a female one ,he simply replied "those are only for just giving birth " ,.i was literally shocked at his reply and an other guy told me "it is simply waste of time to breed a female. because it doesn't give protection "..

i m really shocked at this answers and i was just thinking in my mind "how the hell did they become doberman breeders ??? " . i saw my cousins dobe spicey .she died in defending him against a snake and not only spicy there are so many wonderful female dobermans i saw in my whole life.

i did not get one thing till now why they are suggesting only male???

I can't explain it. I can tell you that a female can and in many cases become as protective as any male. My first female (the one pictured under my name) was the dominant one and was the protector not only for me but my male when I got him two years later. In fact, when he was a puppy and I was out mowing grass, she would stay between him and the mower.

If any stranger came around it was Windy who barked, Hans would stand behind her but rarely barked. When she was nursing puppies, he suddenly became the protector and barked at strangers, until the puppies were weaned and Windy took over again.

Over the past 28 years I have had a dozen different Dobies and the only one that never barked or took a protective stand was the runt of a litter and her larger sister and brother were here as well. They took the lead, and Betsy was subservient so let the others take the lead.

It could be a fact that many desire a male thinking what you have been told, but I have not found that true.

I am curious about your question as you already have your girl and she looks good.

It might be because they can  make more money from selling the female pups to people who in turn want to use them as breeders. Many people who just want to make a quick buck don't take into account what it means to responsibly breed dogs. Vet bills, shots, cropping, docking, it can add up to an extraordinary amount of money.

Dobermans are instinctively protective.. I don't think it really makes much difference if they are male or female. Each dog is individual.

chvarun1990 - the one thing you would not want to do is have two males in the house. If both have not been neutered, you will have a terrible time with them marking their territory. When I liven in town house the owner/landlord who lived next door had a large pen out back with three male bird dogs. I had a male Doberman who at this point was 5 years old. When I would let him out back he would make a bee line to that pen and mark all four sides. Then the bird dogs would take turns re-marking all four sides. Then Hans would make another pass, after which ... well, you get the idea. I had never really witnessed a pissing contest before, but while I lived there it was a three times daily occurance.

Of the dozen or so Dobies I have had in 28 years all but 3 were female. I had Hans, whom I got in 1984, and then kept his son Willhelm who was born in 1984, but lost him in 1999 to cancer. Then I got Red in 2003. Females are easier to keep in the house as they are not prone to marking. A single male is ok, but introduce an intact female to the household with an active male and he will start marking.

The market is strange at times, as Kate mentioned, if a breeder keeps a females and sells off the males, he can then breed the females. Generally though at times females sell for less than males. To some, having a male dog is a macho thing, though most who have them for that reason, keep them outside. I prefer keeping my dogs in the house with me. It protects them, and they in turn offer protection for me.

I've had two females and one male, and I must say my girls were very protective. They were the first to bark at strangers, guarded my daughter when she was a baby, and really seemed to take a more alert role in protection.I think I would compare my Dobes to a lion pack as far as gender and their roles in the family. They were kind of in charge but all my boy had to do was look at them, and they would back down into submission.I've always tried to have one female and one male in my family. Both clearly show the same basic personalities found in the breed. My boy was alive through both females I've had, and the relationship was very similar. Now with him passed I'm introducing a new male puppy to the family very soon.I took the time to find an excellent breeder and simply cannot imagine her telling me what that idiot of a breeder told you.The best advice from me would be, run as fast as you can from the breeder that shouldn't even be alllowed to have a pet.I think you already know that though.

hey patriot

i did do the same , i walked away from the breeder i didn't like what he said . i know it's good to have a female .. according to me these kind of breeders should be stripped of their breeding privilges
