Tory's sick
Hi friends. My girl Tory is sick. She hasn't felt well since Thursday, not eating, trembling like she's cold, goes out and stays out. Last night I took her temp, it was 105. So Friday I call my vet, who is basking in the sun in Cancun. She has a releif vet, that I don't like. She's an ass. She listened to her heart, her tummy, her heart again, took her temp (104.9). Then she told me to take her to an emergency clinic. When I asked her about blood work, x-rays etc. She just said she didn't have the staff to do that, take her to an emergency clinic NOW. I think she knew more than she was saying. We got to Cornell U. an hour later. They listened to her heart, pushed her gums, and took my girl away. Three hours later, they took some fluid from around her lungs, has some suspicious cells, prob. melanoma. Tory is still there, she was very dehydrated. She is having iv fluids, more x-rays, prob an ultra-sound. She will be there a day or two. Then I hope she can come home. Just wanted to let you all know.
Oh no, keeping her in my thoughts and praying that she feels better soon.
Please keep us posted on how she's doing.
Poor baby girl! I hope she gets better soon! Please keep us updated.

Thank you everyone. Tory is stable, she ate a little and found a vet student that she has bonded with. The oncologist is going to do an ultra sound on Monday. they want to do a ct scan with an aspiration of the lungs. I don't think so, too much $$$ and alittle dangerous for her too. But, we'll see what the ultra-sound shows. She isn't saying too much, until she sees more. Will keep you posted, thanks for being here.
OH I hope she will be back home soon. I'm praying for her and you. They become our children.
Thoughts and prayers that she gets better coming your way!
Sorry to hear this - I hope she's alright
Chris, so many of us know the pain you're experiencing.. there are no words to describe it.
Please know that we are all here for you and are praying for a good outcome
thanks for staying in touch.. it means a lot to many of us who are waiting and praying and hoping for the best
Awww I hope they are able to help her!! I hope she gets back on her feet and back to her usual self soon!! Keep us updated!! So very sorry!
As I read your post, I got all teary eyed. :( Tory will be in my thoughts and prayers, hopefully they will make her all better!
Tory is home. Feeling better, but no diagnosis. They haven't ruled out cancer, but they did rule out ticks. She is on 7 diffetent drug, including Zofram for her upset tummy. She did play with Tony this afternoon, and she started it. We go back to Cornell on Monday, should have pathology by then. Hopefull she is on the mend. Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts and words. I'll keep you posted.
Thank you for checking in, I've been so worried about her. I'm glad, as I'm sure you are, that she's back home with you. Give her some scritches from us and tell her Fancy said to get better!
Thanks Fancy will do :)
I'm happy to hear Tori is home and praying for a speedy recovery!
Oh my lord, how horrible!! I hope that she continues to mend. I will be waiting to hear the diagnosis; oh god it brings back memories of Goofy and the sudden-ness of it all. It is never easy to deal with substitute vets; invariably they seem to lack the compassion of the regular vet, she should have at least tried to prepare you for what the emergency hospital might find. That was irresponsible on her part. Poor Tory, glad she felt like playing but dang what is wrong with your poor girl......will be watching for your next post.....
Hugs to tory and prayers her way.... and Ben sends rottie kisses
Hi everyone, thanks for the positive vibes. We have a diagnosis...NOT cancer, yeah. However, Tor has a Staph infection, that is what the fluid on her lungs is. She also has a bladder infection, oooh, it's e-coli. Yuck. We know she "snacks" outside, guess we will have to curtail that. Got this news last night, she has surgical options, but I'm not putting her through that. We go back for a re-check on Monday, hopefully the antibiotics will take care of the infections. I'll keep you guys posted, thanks again for the concern.
Oh good, something that is able to be corrected. I hope the antibiotics work fast for her, and the snacking outside is troublesome, I know there is an enzyme that you can put on their food to make poop eating taste bad (wouldn't it anyway, eeeewwwww) it's called Forbid and it's a powder not sure if there is any other option for their food, of course picking up the stuff is the cure, but on rainy days that is not an option at least for us, yuck. So making it unappealing is the way I am going to have to go, but with 5 cats and 2 dogs that's alot of Forbid might be cost prohibitive for me. I believe it's one pack per day or something like that. Check out Drs.Foster&Smith or Carealotpets
So happy to hear she is on the mend....Keep us posted on how she does.....
Oh I am so happy to hear it is NOT cancer... staph infections are serious thou, but hopefully the antibiotics will do the trick! Thanks for the update!
So happy to here its not cancer as well, praying she is on the fast track of health!
Thank you all for your well wishes. Tor seems to be feeling good, breathing is good, heart rate is good, temp is normal, activity level is up. Hopefully she's on the mend. One other change I noticed last night, her coat feels softer. Her coat has felt course for some time. Wonder how long she has had these infection. Something more to worry about.
Talisin, thank you for your sugguestions, but Tory is "snacking" on goose and deer poo. We have talked about shooing the geese of the pond in the spring. They are mostly gone now. We raised 5 families this summer, about 40 in total. guess we wont do that again.
Not to get sappy, but now everyone (outside of the site) understands what this week has been like. She's not "just a dog" she is a best friend. God bless all of you
oh my that's alot of little poop, can't clean that up or sprinkle food, what is it with the dog taste buds that they find these things so yummy, eewwww, the chihuahua used to like to find bunny poop now with all the feral cats we don't have bunnies :((. Wonder if her infection came from eating that assortment of poop? I know Ben got deathly ill eating mushrooms before we could stop him and the doc said any foreign material especially poop can cause infections, gastro infections, dehydration and sometimes death. And you are right about the hair all animals get a coarse and sometimes greasy feel to them if they are not in good health, I know that's how I know immediately that one of the cats is not feeling well - the hair goes from soft and sleek to rough and kinda dry, very observant on your part :)) Keep doing what you're doing and keep us posted, sounds like she is feeling better always a good sign. Lots of Benie-man rottie kisses to her....
hope she continues to feel better.. poor baby girl pupy hugs!

Chris - I haven't been on lately so missed all the start of this. I am glad Tory is doing better and is home. We do have to watch them like hawks, because they can get into all kinds of stuff. The current favorite of my 4 month old Jake is acorns on the ground (I have a lot of oak trees). They cause digestive upset.
Give her a hug and a couple of ear rubs from me and nose bumps from Princess and Jake.
Late to this thread, but I'm so glad to hear Tory is feeling better. Must have been so scary!
So glad that Tori is on the mend. I will admit, my heart sank reading your original post---my Darmok started filling with fluids before we found out that she had cancerous tumors that had already attached to her liver, spleen and wrapped around her intestines so it was totally inoperable. Now I have a smile for Tori and a prayer in my heart that she will overcome this infection thing quickly and be better than ever.
Just checking in, Tory is still doing good. Eating, playing, even chased a cat, not something she usually does. We go back to Cornell next Friday, very anxious for that. Will let you know how we make out.
Thank you everyone for your concern. You all have a Merry Christmas. Hugs to you all and the pooches.
Chris - give her a good hug and have a good Christmas.
Thanks, Rick to you and Princess and Jake too.
Hi all, Just got back from Conrell and Tory is doing great. The vet did a flash ultrasound and found no fluids. She will be on meds for 2 more weeks, then they will do x-rays, then 2 more weeks of meds.
Thanks for the support
Chris and Tory
thanks for the update, great news to read that there's no more fluid!
That's such a relief to hear. Thanks for the update!
Glad to hear she's on the mend :)
Glad to hear Tory is doing much better!!
Oh Chris.. I was so happy to open and read your latest post this morning.. It's amazing how well they respond to antibiotics.. I happen to know EXACTLY the feeling you're experienced when you found out "It was just an infection" ( JUST an infection LOL) we were worried sick with Sofia's high liver enzyme count for almost a month.. treated her with antibiotics and special hepatic kibble.. and she is happy and healthy and latest blood work showed to be perfect.. It was JUST an infection. Never thought I'd be happy to hear those words..
Happy New Year.. I know it will be! Blessings to you and sweet baby girl Tory!!
Chris, please give Tory another set of hugs and scritches from Princess, Jake and I. We are still thinking of her and sending good vibes her way.
Hey all, great news, Tory was back to Cornell today, and it's all good! Her x-rays were good, no sign of any fluid around her lungs at all. So thankful. Thank you all for you good dober vibes.
The other part of this, the doc doesn't feel the e-coli in her bladder is from the geese(or the deer, or the rabbit) droppings. They did another urinalysis on her today, but with all the antibiotics she's been on I don't how any bad bugs could still be hanging around. so, I guess we won't havee to shoot the geese off the pond. Not shoot the geese, just shoot over them. Okay, to us that's really good news lol.
Thanks again,
Tory ![]()
