this subject line was kinda hard to type in instead of Ben's update :(

Today Pepe is doing ok, it must have been his knee caps, I can only pray that he will pass gently in his sleep one day when it's his time cause I would HATE to take him to the vet as he would have to be muzzled to die and that would be traumatic for me for certain, he screams and wiggles and stuff out of fear due to his eyesight and watching how Ben didn't react at all to the needles I just know Pepe would leave me emotionally scarred from the trauma.

In honor of Ben being a rescue we paid a visit to Petsmart's adoption day today and looked at the dogs, I was disappointed by the performance of the rescue, they had only 4-5 small dogs and were so busy talking amongst themselves that they didn't even acknowledge that we were looking at the dogs - rescues need to understand they are doing a JOB - finding animals homes not socializing, they are doing the animals a dis-service by ignoring prospective adopters.

So then we took a trip to my hated Humane Society (they have "deals" and "free" cats and such I hate them but they do have some big dogs); as much as it pained me to walk in I did and there was a beautiful male pit mix called Topper and we got to take him out in the grassy area and he was a total clown, we loved him but he would chase cats so that was a no. If we had the back deck enclosed for the house addition for the cats we would have brought him home. He was hysterical, he would throw himself down and roll over for a belly rub instantly, he knew some commands and was kinda on the lazy side but he also didn't focus on the people within his immediate space, he would focus on the people in another fenced area, he would come when called but then run right back over so he was a bit distracted and then he would lay down and ignore us kinda too independent and not into people.....we want a velcro type dog, Ben got that way in the end with me. It took him a while but he did get clingy and followed me everywhere.....some of you may remember that was what I missed about Goofy my collie who died 2 years ago, Ben didn't hover like Goofy and I missed that so then these past 4 months Ben did hover I thought it was great that he was finally accepting me as a part of HIS life but now I know it was because he was in pain and wanted to be close. Anyway we want a clingy type breed. We will keep looking but it's good we are looking.....It's the best way to honor Ben......

And the humane society when I asked them if they could cat test Topper they said NO; they didn't do that sort of thing, but we could adopt him and if it didn't work out we could return him. DO WHAT???? I'm sorry when a dog gets in my car as an adoption he BELONGS to the family and it's wrong to get the dog's hopes up too that he has found a home. I think it's disgusting that these people do this crap. They have FREE cats in October!!!! drop fees throughout the year for cats to a "buy one get one" for $5 yep $5; and drop dog adoption fees to $30 bucks sometimes it's terrible I talked to the manager at a rescue group get together and she said there was nothing wrong with this sort of thing - I beg to differ!!!! FREE cats are you joking!!! Nothing wrong with it!!!!! and to then have a dog that is adopted out and then labeled as "returned" that is so wrong when they have a full cat room that they could see how a dog reacts without endangering anyone without sending a dog out and having it kill someone's beloved cat. Again I hate that place for their policies......they are all about the numbers.....one employee even laughed out loud when I asked if the dog would be labeled returned and euthanized because of being "red flagged" as a return, funny???? nothing about that was funny.....most shelters have a red flag they put on returned dogs and that makes them first up to die cause there was "something wrong" with the dog if was returned. I almost called the woman out on the laughter at my remark, but didn't want to embarrass my husband.......

Thanks for letting me vent

Tal,

I'm so sorry for your loss. The free cat thing also is sad. I don't see why they couldn't test a dog or even a cat for their tolerance level. I went into Tractor Supply last week with Axel and there were these two women with cats they saved from an animal shelter and were trying to adopt them out. Axel got right up to the cages and the cats didn't react . In fact they asked if they could take a pic of Axel with the cats because it might help with their adoption but then again they were just good Samaritans. Anyway I'm rambling. I hope and pray you give another big sweetie the love you gave Ben.

That shelter seems to have it's priorities off.  I had to laugh at you not wanng to embarrass your hubby.  Anthony and I take turns calling people out on messed up behavior. I embarrass himand he embarrasses me. As for the Adopt a pet day volunteers it is odd that you would just icnore a potential adopter.  I get that you shouldn't  get in someones face and beg them to take a pet but if they seem interested then you should at least talked to them.  I just got a phone call from a friend wanting to give me another kitten...I asked her why she didn't get her cats fixed 6 months ago now she has three inbred kittens and a mama cat to young to be a mama. I hope you find a new furbaby to share all that love you have.

A few weeks ago, I was at Animal Services with a friend.  While we were there this guy walks in with a beautiful pitbull.  He was returning the dog and was hoping to get his money back.  Turns out they have a 30 day refundable return policy and this guy was just over 30 days.  Anyway, he kept telling the clerk there was nothing wrong with the dog (who I guess was around 6-8 months old).  The pit played well with this kids, got along with the cat, but had too much energy for his older rottie.  I was so angry when I heard this guy's reasoning.  Why do people not consider their family/pet dynamic before adopting?

Hey Tal.... I got an email with a direction on getting green algae for my Roman here and my husband deleted it before I could write down the info.  :-(. (Not sure if you remember me).  I have the old 12 year (almost 12 in 2 mos) Rottie.   He's hanging in there.  I feed him soft foods now.  He isn't gaining much weight and he can no longer handle stairs because his back legs just turn to mush as he's trying to climb the steps, but he seems comfy and happy as he spends his time sleeping.  And yes Rotties can definitely be Velcro too. ;-). Roman follows me from room to room, upstairs 'if I don't stop him that is' haha or downstairs.... Doesn't matter that he's old and slow, he's gonna make sure he follows me.  Believe me, I will tell him "no, Roman you stay here...I will be right back." But he will give me this look of....'but I NEED to follow you!   So yes! Rotties can be Velcro too.

I also wanted you to know how much I've been thinking about you and Ben here, Tal.  My heart goes out to you.  I was so choked up that I couldn't even write when I first read about Ben.  We have had Roman for 10 years now.  He's Velcro (but lazy Velcro I'd say). Lol.  Follows.....lays down......follows......lays down......follows.....lays down.   That's always been our Roman.  He's the sweetest Teddy bear dog I've ever had and the best dog we've ever had.  I know Roman is close to joining Ben.  I think I may just lose it when he goes.  I always do when my pets go.......but Roman is my ultimate "best buddy".  I can so feel your pain right now.  :'-(.   Rotties are the best!   I'd post more pics on here of him, but even my husbands help doesn't seem to get them posted.  I'm guessing it's because we have a sad, poor internet in our country home here.  :-/

Oh thanks guys.....Atticus of course I remember Roman!!! did you need to get the F3?? did you get any before?? if so was it from my vet up here? email me and I will give you the info if you would like....

Well things around here got worse - seems that on our way to the local rescue to see what dogs they had - a different rescue they are a large organization I just don't care for their facility as it's just chainlink fencing (lots) inside a big barn and the dogs can get aggravated with each other and the barking is non stop hard to pick a dog in that atmosphere.

Anyway, we were on our way there and had a car accident. Seems that a light was red in front of us and we were on a 5 lane in the far right lane and the guy in the left lane had stopped short of the car in front of him and was waving a car over and this guy going up the hill the other direction was trying to cross our lanes so this guy in the left lane motions him over and he turns without looking to see if we were coming down the right lane and we had no where to go but into the front fender, my husband was driving and slammed on the brakes, we were in a new, of course new, BMW M1 it was an investment car for us, :( but the brakes worked and although we had only 8 feet to stop in that little car stopped and I honestly thought we were going to stop within a whisper of the honda element, but nope we slid right into him....we were thrown violently forward and then on impact backward, we had to go to urgent care for xrays of our backs and necks, the car was driveable, the officer did not even cite this kid with making an unsafe maneuver!!!! or reckless endangerment nothing.....and we have about $5000 damage to our car, we need a headlight, a bumper, a grille, and the special coating resprayed on the car. Nothing on the car was crushed or busted but the damage is there and needs to be fixed, this car was perfect and that is what we want back....of course this will show up on a car fax and that will kill the investment value of this model.

We have sprained necks, shoulders, and lower back; we will be sore for several days I know but thank god nothing more serious is wrong....not that I worry about my nails but somehow I managed to break all the nails on my right hand, not sure how, I must have reached for the dash or something.....I did learn via the xrays I have arthritis in my lower spine and osteoporosis throughout my spine, and that danny has two broken vertebrea instead of one that we knew about....he refuses to do range of motion movements to prevent soreness so he is going to suffer tomorrow, I have been working on keeping my muscles moving and hoping for less pain than what I am expecting

On top of Ben's passing, Pepe's kneecaps, Callie's leg injury - now this - it's a bit much to take.....

Hi Tal,

You may, or may not, take a dim view of craigslist; but I just checked in your state and though there are obvious bybs and others you would not want to adopt from, there are some honest people just trying to find homes for deserving animals.

Also have you ever heard of a Plott Hound? I think they are one of the oldest American breeds, from the Carolinas and very healthy. Med-Large, short hair, intelligent and beautiful brindle coats. I was looking into them, but they are very rare here on the West Coast.

Hope you are having a good search and that you feel better:) I am so excited for you and the prospect of a happy adoption!!

Oh, Tal, how awful.  Trying to do good, and getting slammed for it!  Was it a real BMW M1 or a BMW 1 Series M?  The M1 rates up there with "very cool cars"!  What year is it?

Hope you both are OK - our "mature" (ahem) bodies don't take kindly to being shaken around, do they?

Are you looking for a breed of dog (maybe, say, a Doberman?) or are you looking for a dog that's looking for you?

Hi Tal

So sorry for all the troubles you have been having, hope you both are feeling better. My son had an accident similar to yours but he was held at fault because he rear ended a woman who decided she needed to be on the sight side to get in a turning lane while my son was already in this lane. Had to pay for he damages plus our own through insurance, I was not happy but the insurance company did not think it worth pursuing.

Glad you are looking into rescues, sorry that the volunteers are not very helpful, wish you could come here to Chicago we have several shelter but only one that we have adopted all our pets from which is a no kill shelter. They are so very helpful and always have big dogs, most a little older. Most of all they have pit bull mixes, Loki is pit bull and labrador and a definite velcro dog even though the beginning was a bit rough as he was a chewer on people and a bit hyper. I have learned through my other forum that this mix is loving, very friendly, no problems with cats and will stick to you like glue. Size varies as they may be pittie size 40-60 lbs Athena we just adopted or like Loki, lab sized 60-100lbs. We have found our newest adoptee Athena is pit/lab also. Its in the ears and muzzle that you can tell, sometime the color too as all the black/brown ones have a tuxedo chest. Just a suggestion as there are so many of them out there being turned in due to hyperness or chewing. But there are also so many other breeds looking for homes as well. Good luck in finding your match. But like I said if you want to visit cold Chicago I'm here for ya!

Tal, I am so sorry to read about Ben!  I hate that I've been away from here for so long, I've been wrapped up in my own dramas and stuff.  Ben was a great boy and you gave him the most wonderful gift, a loving home and the kind of life he deserved.  You are such a wonderful person and the love you have for your furbabies is incomparable!

I hope that you find your velcro baby, I know that when you do Ben will be looking down from the Rainbow Bridge happy that you gave his place in your home and family to another dog that so deeply needs it!

I hope this made sense, I'm a little teary over Uncle Ben, Honorary Doberman.

hey guys - been gone for a bit grieving and it's hard to come here and not talk about ben's adventures......

I went out yesterday and was just waiting for my mom to do a bit of shopping in a souvenier store locally, we do that frequently the little town has shops that carry stuff with NC on it and such, anyway i looked up and there was a rottie statue staring at me, i went over and it was super affordable it's in a sitting position and is a little bigger than a large cat so of course I got it and later that day once again i was waiting for my mom and looked down at a shelf and there was a pillow with rottweiler on it and pics of rotties in a tweedy type fabric, so naturally i looked and there next to it was a sofa throw with a rottie on it, these dogs looked like Ben in the different stages of his health with us, so we now have a house full of rottie things.....the sad part was that the cats all thought that we had shrunk ben and that the statue was him, they tried to snuggle up to it :(( and then handel tried playing with it's feet - his fav thing to do with Ben at bedtime, and got frustrated that "ben" wouldn't play. Tonight they are still doing this with that statue it makes me cry so hard, they are so lonely without him too.....I also had to pick up his ashes today alone, I burst into tears in the lobby and had to sit in the car for a long time before i could even drive home.....I had purchased some picture frames today too for two pics that a guy that works for danny who is taking photography classes and wanted to use Ben as a subject matter the two days before ben died, he gave us two pics and i got those framed and hung up today so it has been a sad two days for sure.

Found several dogs to adopt but they are already adopted - great for them but not for us. one was a rottie that was in love with cats and loved dogs too.....oh well one day the right dog will come around.

princi - I don't do craigslist cause of all the needy animals and crazy people that advertise them, breaks my heart.....I don't want them to end up like puppy doe the pit bull that was tortured so i don't look. As for the plott hound yes i know all about them :) and our neighbor actually had one and I loved to hear her bawl but they moved and had to find her a home with his father he was being deployed.

WNC - the car is a BMW 135i M car, it was special order with the M package and SMG tranny which does significantly raise the value so it appears that once again I get to argue with insurance companies about the value of things they need to cover. It's what BMW refers to as an M1 they didn't really "make" an M1 as a straight forward M1 like the M3's but when the M package was ordered they built it same as an M3 but you couldn't go in for instance and say I want an M1 and have them whip out a brochure, instead you went in and ordered a 135 and then added the M components and then it got built as an M1 it carries all the M badging and details throughout and is one wicked wicked little ride.....BMW is helping us work through the insurance mess by talking to them about the value difference between the standard 135 versus the M135, it is interesting to hear them bicker back n forth but frustrating at the same time. And I am a nervous twitch riding in the car since the accident.

As for dogs we have been considering a pit bull, rottie, mastiff, newfoundland or just that perfect dog that needs a home. I haven't considered the doberman yet due to so many cats and the chihuahua. Here are pics of the ones I have considered:

Bonded pair that we were willing to take as a pair and when I contacted them they said they were separating them, I said NO and that the only hold back for me was I wanted to know HOW they cat tested them and got no answer, after pressuring them I finally got the answer that the rottie was adopted and that left the mastiff alone. They would search for the other one when they were not together - I think it was mean to the dogs to not let us try to keep them together all I needed was an answer and they both had a home. >:l

Still considering this ridgeback rottie mix gotta get my husband on board with this one, they said she lived with a cat ONCE but how long ago and will they cat test?? so working on this one

What a cutie!! word is that he is a big mush, he is in rescue but they don't know about cats so I have put in a question about cats no word as of yet

I LOVE THIS GUY - angus - he stole my heart but no nothing about cats, he is in heartworm treatment and no one has answered my question

Clyde the rottie I called on him said he ignored cats, and LOVED LOVED all animals but birds and wanted to play with all dogs called today and he was adopted even though today was his first day for adoption!!! good for him

this dog is current as of tonight and I have put in a question on her I can only hope that someone feels it important enough to answer someone's questions

As you can see I am trying desperately but to no avail. I have looked at collies but so far the collie supply is down, good for them, but  I have yet to see any new collies that like cats so it's a daily hunt for a dog for the cats and us......

Thanks for letting me stop in and share my day and parts of my life......I miss my big dog Benieman so much and sharing my doggie hunt gives me positive things to look towards

My grandmother has always had collies she lost her queenie three years ago and still talks about get another. I found a pretty collie mix yesterday at one of the NY shelters sites, I was about to call grandma and then read she was fully bonded to her sister so they want to keep them togather. At her age she may not want to take on two dogs. I may still call her today.

Well I have been in contact daily sometimes hourly with the little blue pit girl that the 17 year old boy hacked her ears to her skull with some blunt object, she did a video of her with a cat and a kitten, it went really well, with the dog rushing in first off and then licking them both silly.....she is only a year and a half so she is still in the pupster years and wants to play and gets super excited, I think here in a calm home and with constant direction on being easy with the cats she would do fine. Plus we are in the process now that the garage is finished of enclosing the back deck off the kitchen for the cats anyway meaning less cats to be in a dogs face. We would still allow Fidget and momma kitty in the main house one of the main reasons to enclose the deck is so Fidget can get some peace from the others attacking her and maybe then she could keep her food down and put some weight back on.

Plus the gray pit, her name is Sass and she is in AL and her foster mom's grandmother lives in the next town, where WNC Dobes lives, she said she had a motorcycle accident and just can't deal with all the dogs she is fostering and this girl is ready to get into a home. She may come up for thanksgiving if she does she will bring Sass for a visit. I have seen tons of videos on Sass now and pics of before and now I will have to post some of those later. She was one of those starved to bones dogs, she was shot in the side/gut by another neighbor, and of course had her ears whacked off by an idiot teenager.....other than her ears though you would never know that. Anyway small world to think that her foster mom has ties to my area......she fosters all the time and said we connected for a reason and she wants to remain friends and visit even if Sass finds another home.

Sass is supposed to have potential adopters visit her this weekend they apparently put in their app before I did so she is trying to be fair about it; after talking to me though she said she felt like she just wanted to let us adopt Sass immediately - that was sweet; I posted tons of pics of our critters and home so she would feel a bit better about the distance issue.

And my friend with all the rotties lives in AL and her husband said he would drive the hour or so over to pick up Sass and deliver her to Atlanta, GA for us to meet him there should the foster mom not be coming this way - sounds like so many pieces falling into place for this one I really have my hopes up on her.......

Never have heard back on the mastiff, Angus (I just love his face) or the rottie/ridgeback and of course today there are new collies at the rescue whereas there have been no new arrivals for months but today there are 3, go figure, 2 caught my eye so who knows......I'll keep you posted :)

I know what a trial it can be to adopt a dog.  I think the best attitude to take is that if its supposed to be, it will be.  There IS another pupster out there who needs you, Tal.  It may take some time before the right one comes along.

With that thought, and because I don't want to hijack your thread, I am posting our new baby in a new thread.  After two (or maybe three) weeks of filling out adoption apps and communicating with a rescue, Gibbs came home with us from Knoxville yesterday.

Best of luck for you, your family, and whoever you get to bring into your "fold"!

Tal, having been in rescue for so many, many years, I will never understand how these rescue people do not respond right away to ANY inquiry about their fosters.   We lost so many potential home, in my group, due to foster homes not responding to a simple question, like will the dog be ok with cats!   Even when we were searching for our dobie addition, I found so many rescues that did not get back to me ever, and some it took weeks for them to respond.   It seemed like we would never find the right dobie for our pack and critters, but we finally did with the litter of 10 dobie pups.   The right dog is out there and I am sure you will find it.   Keep after those rescues, really how hard is it to send a email!

Looking forward to hearing more about your search.   Good luck.
