Sweet tooth?
Gideon LOVES candy. I don't give it to him much at all, as I am concerned about potential health problems - but he begs like nobody's business when he hears that box/wrapper. Lemonheads are his favorite. Do any of your doberkids have a sweet tooth? What are the potential harmful effects?
There's a post here somewhere.. but I'm too lazy to try to find it for you.. just type in
" what is harmful for dogs to eat" somewhere on your http thingy..
You're going to be surprised..
we give Sofia only a few human foodies.. cottage cheese, sardines..eggs.. oh yeah and every now and then when that face gets irresistible and her eyes tell us that she just might die if we don't... she gets a teensy bit of pizza crust.
Onions ( in any form) are toxic..
pop corn.. not good..
sugar.. bad..
chocolate, deadly.
the list goes on and on.
But I've seen Gideon's eyes... they probably get like lasers when he spies a lemonhead!!
I've never met a dog without a sweet tooth! But as Lady Kate says, sweets are very dangerous. I give Bella bananas which she loves, and animal crackers...That's it with the sweets. Not good for the teeth, weight, etc. But oh those doberman eyes, they can make you feel like such a bad Mom....
Yeah I looked up and see that it can be a problem. Guess I shoulda done that first, huh... Bananas are an interesting idea - may have to try that one.
You're right Kate - he definitely gets a glare in his eyes when he sees them! Lol
Phin gets apple, pineapple, carrots and steamed bell pepper.
Skye's fave treat... and don't tell the dober-cops, lol... is candy hearts. Now, I know that there has got to be something bad for her in there, but the big eyes and "I love you"s are soooooo cute, I can't stand them Then she starts pawing me, and crying. I can't help but give in. lolz
We keep dog treats to "made for dogs" type treats but we keep it veggie. We get the "Just Veggin" treats, sweet potato treats, apple treats.
My vet said that ANY milk products like ice cream, cheeses, etc. can cause a dog to become violently ill and possibly die, the dog stomach does not have the proper digestive enzymes to digest milk products some dogs are more sensitive than others but ALL dogs cannot digest milk products. Ben ended up hospitalized for 3 days thought we might lose him all because he snatched the bottom of a dropped ice cream cone which might have had a tablespoon of ice cream but it did the big rottie in, also dogs may throw up cheeses because of the lack of ability to digest them. It also changes the flora in the digestive system and that can take a while to re-establish in dogs.
We did have a whippet who ate chocolate with no problem he used to share choco chip cookies with my husband, I know it varies between dogs but always know that anything other than one small bite could actually kill your dog. I know when I eat an apple I save one tiny bite for the chihuahua, I also let him have one blueberry, one bite of strawberry, and he will have a fit for cantaloupe or watermelon. So fruit which is naturally sweet is ok but in very small amounts, anything with man made or processed sugar is not at all good for the dogs. Just cause they want it doesn't mean they should have it.
Harley FAV treat is ice cubes! lol.
As soon as anyone opens the freezer door Harley will come bolting from anywhere, we've even tried doing it quietly but with no such luck, he can't get enough of them!
On really hot days I put a whole tray of ice cubes in his water bowl and he bobs for them, the whole time his tail wagging furiously!
I'll have to take some pics
Didn't know about the dairy products...cheese is a fav treat around here for both Gideon and Stormy. And I also share a little of my milkshakes from time to time. Now, I have to add that most of the treats I give out are the kind made for dogs. I go to the vet every couple of weeks and stock up. That and hotdogs are the real staple.
Rolo mostly has doggie treats and fish jerky but he loves honey so I let him lick my fingers when I have some! He had bannana once but it upset his tummy. He also has carrot sticks in his kong.
As a treat why not just keep cubes of liver, bones and knuckles in the freezer/fridge. Your baby will love you to the ends of the earth if you gave them these as treats instead. Surely this would be a healthier option. I know it's a bit of a mission, cutting it up, storing it, washing hands etc, but I am sure you do this anyway. I just don't think you are doing them any favours giving them candies. But, I know, those puppy dog eyes can make one give in!
Here, see this link and you see what food is bad for Gideon.

I also have my research coz I dont to end up spending a lot for Vet visits or worst, losing a family member.
Like I said, the great majority of the time he gets made-for-dogs treats. Knowing the hazards, I don't plan to give him any more...as long as I can train the kids.
Thanks for the link!

Aside from apples and bananas, nothing sweet. But he does do the whining and begging when he sees us eating them. They are the only foods we share with him.
