Pet Profiles

Well, tonight one of a dog owner's worst fears happened to me.  About 10:45 pm I let Freyja out for the last time of the evening.  After a couple of minutes I began to smell the smell of, yep, Pepe Le Pew.  I quickly ran and, to paraphrase Ray Stevens,... I hollered "come in Freyja", but it was too late, she'd already been sprayed.  There she goes (look at that, look at that), there she goes (look at that, look at that), and you better hold your nose....I like to do crazy paraphrases of songs, and I need to put some humor to the situation.

Yep, Pepe had gotten her right in the face.  Of course I had no tomato juice (don't know if that works or not) and no skunk deodorizer.  We headed to the bathroom where I ran the bathwater and to my surprise Freyja jumped in when I told her to.  To have just undergone something as dramatic as being skunked she behaved pretty well.  After 3 washings and a half bottle of cologne I think I've got her where she is at least bearable.

All joking aside I will get some kind of skunk deodorizer to keep here in the house after this incident.  Anyone know of a good one?  Anyone ever had any experience with tomato juice?  I figure it'll take another washing or two tomorrow to get her back to normal.

Poor Freyja. l am sure she did not enjoy it any more than you did. I have never been in that situation so I do not have any experience.

I bet Freyja learned a whole new variety of swear words. That's horrible. I've had a few close calls be the dogs and I have yet to be sprayed. I'm glad you have a sense of humor. It's really necessary isn't it.

Oh deary deary ...

How I laughed, and I apologize as Skunk spray can hurt and I'm sure poor Freyja's eyes were burning.. but the visual of her jumping into the tub to get the noxious fumes off her poor self is just too funny.

No skunks here.. just wild cats, rattle snakes, cactus and other hazards to keep Sofia on leash at all times...

P.S. Lazarus- the Harlette has come to call on several occasions, but we always check the yard before releasing Her Ladyship.

Let us know how your sweet Freyja fares... Pepe le pew indeed!!

Hi Freyja's Dad, my sister's dog just got skunked three weeks ago (cockapoo).  She used a formula of hydrogen paroxide, baking soda and a little dog shampoo. I guess it is a chemical combination that really works to dissolve the skunk discharge and deordorize.  The smell came 99% out of Pippie, but the problem is more over the funiture and rugs he rubbed his face all over when he came racing into the house.  Throw rugs she got rid of, but with the furniture, I think all she could do was spray Febreeze.  Good luck - if it's in the house, it will diminish a lot in a week or so.

The skunk remedy is 4 cups of hydrogen peroxide, 4 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of dishwashing soap.  Wear rubber gloves, put cotton balls in your dog's ears so the mixture doesn't get in his ears.  Apply the solution from the head and work backwards.  Don't get it in the dog's eyes.  Rub it into the coat.  Rinse off well.  Repeat if necessary.

Personally, I always have a bottle of Skunk Off shampoo in the house, just in case.  Learned my lesson ... the second time - lol!

I almost had the same incident tonite lol.  Got home from work, took Dakota out, she did her business, and we started walking around the house.  I have a headlamp I use at night, we come around the corner of the house, and there's a small skunk maybe 7 feet away.  I picked up Dakota (before she saw it thank god!) and booked it to the back lol.  Luckily I didn't have to use glengate's advice!

Puppy curiosity would have gotten her and maybe you sprayed. At 9 weeks, it would have been traumatic, as she is in one of her fear periods. Another week she should be out of it, so it would not be so bad, except for the smell of course.

This is why in the wild, the pups are kept close in the den for a lot longer than we humans keep the puppies with mama. Of course in the wild, the entire pack raises the kits, the rest of the pack being "aunts" and "uncles" and watching them while Alpaha male and Alpha female go hunting. Of course for the first 4 weeks or so Alapha female doesn't do much hunting.

Tomatoe Juice is a farce

Skunk scent removal recipe.

http://www.aaanimalcontrol.com/skunksmellremovalrid.htm

for future reference this recipe was in the Missouri Conservation Magazine. I had a hard time hunting it up again.  You poor thing I have not yet had to experience that, but after finding the recipe I will print it for myself.
