Dobiegirl - welcome to the community. I know you are eagerly awaiting your new puppy. I applaud you for getting ready. Our Alpha Admin jokingly refers to Dobie puppies as "evil", and having survived a number of them over the years, they can be. They are wonderful and of course active and inquisitve as all puppies are, but their intelligence seems to give them a head start on us.

One member posted a photo a  while back of her pup who as I remember was about three months old and had gotten the pantry door open. He was streched as far as he could be with his long neck and nose aided by his long legs investigating the goodies that were available.

Hi Dobiegirl and welcome! I am excited for you as you await your new baby dog.  You are right, this site has the best and most helpful information out there, and we all love our dobies so much. My one tip would be to read through the posts to catch tips about training and start immediatly with your puppy. There are lots of members who have a new puppy now and also members who have had many dobermans over the year, and really know what they are talking about.  Your dobie baby will be a sponge and will rise to any challenge you give him, plus it will demonstrate your place at the top of the pack. Good luck; looking forward to hearing about your experiences!

yep, they're incredibly smart, and even at a very young age can trick you easily if you're not watching!  Best of luck, and post those pics when you get them!

Thanks so much for the welcome. I think I will fit right in. I do have a few questions and concerns however and maybe you all can enlighten me... This will be the first big dog I have ever had. Like I said had one as a young girl(mom&dads) that was amazing. I have always had smaller dogs and some have been rather hard to train while others not so much. I have had a few Min Pins in the past the i absolutely adored. I now have a Min pin/Chi mix that I have had for seven years.

I guess I just need a little advice for when I first bring puppy home and will be trying to get it used to everything.

Any suggestions will be more than appreciated.

P.S. Keep in mind I work in a nursing home on 12 hour days. I leave at 6 in the morning. My hubby also works but he leaves at 12 in the afternoon. So pretty much I work from 7am-7pm and he works 1:30pm -9:30 pm. and its a 30 min drive to and from work. Would that do any good for a training scedule?

Hi Dobiegirl... welcome to the forum!!

Yikes... I hope you read a lot of the posts re: new pups.

Seven hours is a long long time to leave a new little one alone.. They need more company and time to potty train. You cannot leave him ( her) outside all that time and they need to be let out much more often than once in seven hours..Is there anyone else in the house to let the baby out and do training?

Yea, My father lives with me .. I guess I could ask him to let the pup out every couple hours or so until I get home. But he will not do anything but let it out then put it back in the house. I guess I can let out and train first thing when i get home from work. It's going to be a lil tough but I only work like that 2 days at a time and the hubby works like that maybe four days at a time... I had thought about getting like a timer and setting it for every two hours or so to help when im not home so my dad can do it ... would that be something to check into?

You know what? I haven't raised a pup in many years.. but I don't even leave Sofia for more than two or three hours and she's a big girl now.. So I'm not really qualified to answer that question..Let's hope you will get more input from some of our new puppy people.

They need socialization and they need their pack leaders; especially in those early days.. read and read some more..

Thank you for your vote of confidence. I have been doing more and more research the closer the day comes when i can pick up my puppy. Still Haven't decided on a male or female yet though. But I do have a couple interesting names for one.

Boy- Apollo(the hubby is dead set on this name)

Girl-Siren,Pandora, or Aurora.

Have thought of a couple more but those are the picks for now.

I feel in love with the breed when i was a young girl. I love the way they look and I know they are very smart and fun loving animals when trained properly and socialized. I guess you could say I have always wanted one since I was young. I have put off getting one though until I was able to obtain a well paying job and have the means and money and the yard to house such a wonderful breed of dog. I also can't have kids of my own and currently own a minpin/chi mix (had for 7 yrs) and i figured if i can't have kids I then I could have my dogs.

Hello. And welcome to the forum.

It looks like you are going to be a fine, responsible dobermom.  It's nice to see that our breed is going to such a wonderful owner.  Look forward to hearing all the new, wonderful but hellish stories of the young pup; oh and post plenty of pictures too.

I should be recieving my puppy on the 19th or 20th, Depending on if they are eating well and doing good. The breeder wanted to make sure they where eating well before letting the pups go. If it takes a little longer so be it. It's worth the wait. Also they already have docked tails, dew claws removed, and shots utd. When I go to pick one the mother will be on site for me to see as well. I am so excited about it ... The hubby tells me to hush about it all the time. I am just so super excited to be able to get a puppy that i have waited on for years... I will post pics as soon as possiable and myself will probably keep a photo journal as well. Thanks for all the support this is truly a wonderful family here:)

Hi Dobiegirl, just one note before you get your baby so it comes as no surprise.  Doberman puppies are very naughty. They will really test your patience, and I have been a "dog person" all of my adult life.  My husband and I got Ginger from the city pound.  She was just a tiny puppy and we didn't know what breed she was, but that didn't matter to us; we were prepared to adopt her.  I had never seen a doberman puppy before and because of her boxy snout and fat, compact little body, I did not think she was a Doberman. We got her home and our little angel turned into a holy terror. I'm not the best trainer, but I am very familiar with the "concepts" of training.  She wore down our resolve and consistency very quickly. She was my Waterloo for sure!  When she was awake, there wasn't much endearing about her except how cute she was.    She played very rough, terrorized our other dog, nipped, crashed into us and things, chewed, barked, and never seemed to stop long enough to be petted or kissed, which is what I wanted in our next dog. We took her to obedience class and she was so much energy.  She punked on all the other dogs because she played so rough, and she was a handful. (In spite of how "bad" she was, she came in first place because I really worked with her - they are very smart.)  I remember thinking, "oh, wow, this is going to be a long 12 years!" Her goofiness last about two years, but after that quieted down considerably and is now my sweet girl. If you get your doberbaby, train her from day one (KevinK's posts are the bomb!  He has it down and his baby, Dakota, is loving the training - although there are many, many folks on this site who are experts.)  Good luck and keep us posted with your adventures!

Thanks gingersmommy!!

I would absolutely recommend starting the training immediately, and like mentioned, they need a TON of attention to make sure they don't get into trouble...  I love my lil girl, and she's the sweetest, but that doesn't mean I can take my eyes off of her for 30 seconds without something happening.  When she's not in her kennel, I won't take my eyes off of her for more than a few seconds... (unless she's tired and sleepy, once she lays down I can leave her for a long time no problem)  Which means if we're watching tv, and she starts walking around, so do I.  When we're outside relaxing, or hanging out with friends having a beer, and she starts to walk around the house, so do I.  Takes a tremendous amount of patience, and I'm surprised Dakota doesn't think her name is "leave it" lol.  Dobe pups have a tremendous amount of energy, and grow quickly, when we got Dakota she was 12 lbs, now she's 18.  And boy is she fast!  Now, 3 weeks after we got her, I can no longer catch her, and I'm trying my best to never let her know that lol.  I don't want her to know I can't catch her, with such a smart dog that wants to get into everything, that's a recipe for disaster.

If you fully understand what you're getting yourself into, you'll be great, and it seems like you have an awesome head start.  This is not a breed for someone that doesn't want to work their butt off with their dog...  Steph and I argued pretty much non-stop for the first few days as we adjusted our schedules to accomodate the dog, and we still have the occasional argument.  I have literally dedicated all of my waking hours to Dakota, and I've been waking up early, going to bed late, and I'd be lying if I said it doesn't get very stressful sometimes, and I've been tired all day at work, drinking extra coffee.  But you can't let the dog see the frustration... I've noticed once that happens, she doesn't listen so good.   Patience, and a calm demeanor are crucial, because your pup will be able to sense what you're feeling.

A few things to keep in mind, is that they are so smart, they will try to trick you!  Funny story about steph, I told in one of my other posts.  She called me at work one day crying, said Dakota was having a problem peeing... While playing in the yard, she would squat, let out 1 or 2 drops, look up at steph with a sad face... walk a few more steps, squat, 1 or 2 drops, and this woudl keep going on.  I couldn't figure it out, because she never did that with me.  She did her business and we went on our way.  Turns out, Steph was giving her treats after she peed!  Dakota knew that, so she milked it for as many treats as she wanted!!!  We had a good laugh about it, she stopped giving treets (we now only give them when she pees under the tree, which is her "designated area") and she started peeing normal again.  The way they think is amazing, you can never let your guard down... When you look into their face, you can almost see them trying to work things out, it's amazing.

Sorry for the long post, I just love being able to pass on information that will hopefully help someone, and also wanted to give you some real insight as to what's going to be involved.

From the time me and the hubby talked about getting one till now (2-3 days till i get to bring puppy home) We have talked ALOT about scedules and rearrangeing things to train and be there for the puppy and making sure that things go smooth. I will probably be the one doing the most training as it will be more my dog then his. But he has agreed to help in any way possiable. Me and the hubby have also done reasearch on top of research about the breed as well. When I'm not on here finding something to read he is. He had read alot on here as well and likes the stories that everyone has to share. I'm sure later we will have some of our own to share.

PS I think we have agreed on getting a male(but we might change our mind, who knows)

PSS And about patience I have alot. I work in a nursing home and you must have patience with some of the elderly people there. I love my job there and would not have it any other way.

KevinK said it right!  These dogs are like the devil with puppy breath when they are small.  Our entire life has pretty much revolved around Athena since we got her.  Honestly there came a point a few weeks after we had got her where I just said I can't do it anymore, we made a huge mistake and basically had a mental breakdown.  My hubby took her outside to play, I took a bath and the next day I felt much better and quite guilty.  I can't tell you how many times she has made me late for work, caused me not to get anything done around the house and EVERY time we sit down to eat she has to go outside.  Sometimes I think it is worse than having a child.  Athena is now 5 months old and is still a bundle of energy and wednesday's she is in the kennel a little longer than usual and trust me it shows.

Be calm, assertive and most important fair and you'll have a great companion.

Well, called the breeder today. The puppies are still taking milk from the mother as well as eating good as well. The breeder is still concerned that they may still not be ready. The pups have a visit with the vet on Monday( to make sure things are fine and that it okay for her to sell). I was a little dishearted at first then I realized that it is a good thing that this breeder is checking into things before sending them to a new home. So I can wait the extra days and I am still EXCITED!

I would like to say this again as I have said before. This is a wonderful site as well as forum. There are some wonderful people here with so much advice. I appreciate all the advice and support. This site and forum and the people here have made me truly think long and hard about things and I can honestly say I am ready for the challenges ahead. Again thank you all for everything.

If they are still taking milk from mama as well as eating on their own, how old are they right now?

I am truly not sure as the hubby talks to the breeder  .... But from what I can gather between 6-7weeks. Maybe eight. Like I said I don't know for certain but thats the impression i get from the hubby talking about it. See the pup was suppose to be an anniversery present so he really hasn't told me much about any thing except that hes getting me one and a possiable date.

Well ... Me and the hubby have decided to go to another breeder as the one we had picked out to get a puppy from was giving us the run around and did not so much as even respond well to our questions and concerns. I think that maybe we are now better off looking for another breeder. I was dishearted at first. Then I remember this site and the things you all have told me about when looking for a breeder as well as looking at the pups and things. And quiet frankly I just didn't feel comfortable with the breeder(has this happened to anyone else). To me there were just signs and things that made me not want to purchase a dog from her. Maybe its just me who knows, but I have went on to find another breeder that I had talked to before about 8 months or so ago and come to find out his dam has just had a litter(8-22-10). I was so excited so I plan on getting one from him instead... Wish me luck!

Dobiegirl - just remember - everything happens for a reason. You must feel confident with the breeder for there is a great deal you must discuss. You should also plan to spend some time there getting to understand the Sire and the Dam so you can get a good idea what your bundle of joy will be like in several years.

I know you want the puppy now, but in the eight weeks before you get the puppy, you will have that much more time to think about what you need to do to get ready.

I recieved some emails from the breeder last night as we are about a 2 hour drive away. He said i was more than welcoe to come up anytime to check on the puppies talk with him and spend some time with his sire and dam as well as the puppies when they where older. I also recieved some pics of both parents as well

I am so excited... We decided on a feamle for he already had deposits on all his males. She will be named Pandora and she is a Black and Tan.

I think it was also nice to know that the puppies are of Medium Temperment, family oriented, aslo comes with tail and dew claws removed. I aslo will be getting registration papers as well as pedigrees on sire and dam. They also go into say that they have breed since 1972 on a 31 acre residence. They do not practice inbreeding and puppies come from a sire and dam of entirely different bloodlines. He also stated in the email that," To us the doberman pinscher breed is indeed the superior breed of all canines."

Those puppies can't be this litter for they look like they are more than 4 days old. But with mom and dad as black and rust, there won't be very many puppies that are not also black and rust.

I know you are eager to get up there and look at them, but I would wait until they are at least 3 weeks old and/or have their first puppy shots. Before then they will not really look anythink like they will as adults.

Dobiegirl.. How long since the dam's last litter? Have you checked all the credentials of this breeder? Have you inquired from previous owners just how the offspring are doing?

I know you really want your Pandora.. . BYB can be wily and that's not to say you won't end up with a great dog. Once again, as everyone has advised.. Do your homework.

Best of luck, and keep in touch..

Yea over the next couple weeks or so I am going to be asking for previous owner of his dogs and if he can give me names and numbers of a few and see what they have to say. I have also been sent the pedigrees as well. And I am very cautious as I want a well tempered dobie and a healthly one:)
