Hello everyone, this is my first post on forum and I just wanted to take a minute to introduce ourselves.  My puppy is Athena, she is five months old, weighs 45 lbs. and has a medium crop that is on its way to standing for good.  She has been the most trying, difficult, time consuming pain in the ass puppy I have ever seen. But when she looks at me like I am the most important person in her world, the keeper of the laser pointer, her dark soulful eyes melt my heart and make all the hard work completely worth it!

Welcome to the forum Control_Freak ( yeah, like THAT'S going to last with Athena.)

we are so happy to meet you and hope for pictures soon of your Wild Child. Your pup will fill your heart with joy and watching her grow up will be thrilling for all of us... Please post pictures and profile soon.

This forum has been one of the most important places for me to go for questions, suggestions, advice and support.. Vet care is mimimal here in Baja and I am not sure Sofia and I would have  made it through the last year as well as we did without it.. You may make some lifelong friends here ( if you chose) and each and everyone of us love our dogs with passion and empathy.

Look forward to more puppy news as soon as you can

Best

Kate and Sofia

Hi Control_Freak and welcome!  I could relate to your post!  They are wicked little piss pots when they are babies. Your girl will grow into a fine young lady, however, and will calm down when she gets a little older.  Do you exercise and work with her on her commands?  They are totally smart and love a challenge.

As Alpha Admin has posted they are evil little puppies. But they grow into the most amazing, adoring and wonderful dogs. When Princess was 12 weeks old and had just had her ears cropped, the most important thing to her was exploring the world.

I would feed in in the kitchen and she would rather go and explore the house to find anything more important. I had to sit between the food bowl and the exit. It did not take her long to figure out that I would not let her explore until she had eaten. When she had eaten all she was going to, she would sit and look up at me as if to say, Ok, I'm done, it's time to explore.

House training went well. Five minutes after she ate, I would pick her up and carry her outside. When she was done I would lead her back inside. Note I did not let her walk outside until she was about four months old, lest she suddenly decide midway to do it. Same thing if she took a large drink of water - five minutes and outside. If she was awake and it had been around two hours since she had been outside - back outside. When she did her duty, she go praised. If she had an incident in the house - no yells, no fusses, just a stare and a slight scolding. It did not take long.

But then after having had Dobermans for over 28 years, most of the time multiples, I know I have to stay ahead of them or they will take control. My first two did. My first one is my Avatar, and she taught me the ways and wiles of the Doberman. But she was a wonderful loving dog, it was just at times she took control and I had to rush to catch up. But like a parent with multiple kids, you learn from the first (and from forums like this) so when the last comes along, you have been there and done that.

If you have any questions, ask away. The members have a variety of experiences and are free with their advice and stories. Welcome to the Doberman world and the forum.

We try to work with her as much as we possibly can..we walk her 1-2 times a day (hopefully she'll master walking on a leash so we can start running with her)  she goes to training 1-2 time a week and knows all the basic obedience commands and a couple novelty tricks.  Right now we are mostly working on behavior with other people and dogs, and listening to us even with distractions.  We used to take her to the beach until she got attacked, so thats out of the picture now.  We are moving in a few weeks to a bigger area and hopefully I can find an agility class or flyball team to help with bounds of energy!

Thanks everyone!  I have tons of pictures and will be working on a gallery soon...unfortunately its going to be a lot of work since I have my camera take large pictures and they won't upload until I size them down.

@ Lady Kate-  yes she definitely has that dobe posture and sense about her  she usually just stands at attention and stares at people and they usually turn around and walk the other way lol and thanks a lot of people thought the name was too much or too big for such a little puppy...well she didn't stay little very long!

Aren't doberman's the best? Seriously. I mean not to hate on other breeds, I love all dogs...but compared to Dobies, other breeds just seem so "generic."

Control_Freak, can't wait to see some more pics. Since I adopted an adult, I missed out on all the "fun" puppy and teen years....and although I am greatful I have a well mannered gentleman (and had to do nothing to get him that way) I would love to see a gangly teenager...all legs.

Good luck with you baby girl!

Hi all!  I've been using this forum as a preemptive strike so that when we bring home our dobie pup on Saturday, everything is smooth sailing and we have no problems.

Our little man is already 12 weeks old, and we're very excited to meet him.  Hope to have some pictures and great stories for you all soon!

Control_Freak - I use Windows Paint to resize my photos before uploading and/or pasting on a variety of forums. The process is the same but the path is different for the recent versions of Windows.

For XP, you click on Image and then on Stretch/Skew. This opens a dialog box where you choose the percentage by which you wish to reduce the image. I generaly use 50% on both vertical and horizontal axis which actually reduces the file size (and image size) to 25% of the original. If your camera is like mine, a 2MB photo is then about 500KB. If necessary you can do it again and reduce it to 125KB.

For Vista, you click on Image and then on Resize/Skew and from that point it is the same.

For Windows 7, you click on the Home tab (Home Ribbon) and then on Resize. From then on again it is the same process.

KevinK, if you click on the avatar, it will take you into another page where you can click on Athena's picture.  There is one of her on the bed.  She is a beauty!

I don't speak Mac, so can't give detailed info there. However, I am sure they have something similar that you used.

What a gorgeous pup!  How I love seeing all the newcomers, hearing their wonderful, and agitating stories of how those evil puppies have outsmarted us at times.  Hope to hear more of the special girl, she's gorgeous!

They love to be lap puppies when small, but grow up too fast and get too big for that in most cases. I had one that had been hit by a Jeep and spent three weeks at the hospital. Before that she was really independent, but after that every evening wanted to (and did) crawl up in my lap. She would lay at an angle with her rump on my left knee and her nose buried under my right arm. She would stay there as long as I would let her which would be until my legs started to go to sleep. A 70 pound doberman in your lap can cut off the blood supply.

Princess on the other hand can be coaxed and helped up but she is not comfortable there. After a few minutes she gets down and at 72 pounds I am agreeable to let her get down. Red at 100 pounds insists on all four paws on the floor, he doesn't even like me to pick up he front legs.

Hello to all the wonderful dobie owners. Aren't they a special breed?  I have a male - 3 years old, 131 lbs of go get um.  He loves to go with me everyplace - of course this is not my first dobie.  I have a passion for them but can only own 1 at a time.  Two is just out of the question. ha. ha.  He's by companion, my protector and my best friend!  He loves me unconditionally as I do him. Look for pix's of him in the near future, he's beautiful and when he looks at me with those beautiful brown eyes he can have anything he wants!  They are a special breed of dog so treat yours like he's really one of the family and he will serve you like no other dog you have ever owned. They are stubborn, but learn really fast, you must excerise them daily, my Zeus is a house dog but he does have an agility course in the back yard that we work at least 3 evenings a week. He loves his bath and he loves to cuddle with his mama on the couch. so there you have it, treat them as you would you child and they will be yours forever!

O Yeah Athena is very stubborn...we have been having a serious power struggle the last 2 days.  She looks at my hubby as Alpha and me as a play mate...even though we both treat her the same.  SHe been trying to force me to play and she's playing too rough but I am not budging so hopefully she can get this out of her system!
