My name is Debbie.  I’m beginning my search for a Doberman for our family.  I’ve joined a couple of dobe forums.  A little bit about our family.  We live in Lawrence, KS.  My husband and I have two daughters ages 5 and 7.  I also have adult daughters and two grandchildren ages 2 & 4 who visit often.  At age 14 one of my adult daughters got a clumber and showed in obedience through utility.  She also does therapy work.  She has since gone on to get her pre-vet degree and is a trainer/groomer and works with assistance dogs. Her clumber has accompanied her to college and now lives with her at age 12.  Very old for a clumber! We have had several difference breeds of dogs in the last 30 years (standard poodle, boxer, rottie). Having always wanted puppies earlier in life I have changed in the last 10 years or so.  I love puppies, but they are too much work! I have a huge heart for rescue and cannot imagine myself with a puppy again. We currently have a one-eyed pug (4 years old) from Prairie Pugs Rescue in Topeka.  We have two shelter dogs, one toy poodle – adult about 6 years; she was taken from a puppy mill raid.  The other is a sheltie who was so old the vet recommended against spaying her due to her age/health (now about 15+).  We’ve had her for 3 years now.  She was also taken from a puppy mill raid.  Unfortunately we will have to put her down soon.  Her health is failing.  As hard as this will be I don’t want her to suffer.  We don’t have any cats but we do have chickens.  I realized all this needs to be considered before getting another dog.  The adult dogs we have adopted/rescued have been wonderful!  Perfectly fitting into our family, this tells me I’m doing the right thing and I’m certainly happy doing it.

We want a family dog with a good temperament that will fit into our family and be loved on continuously.  All of our other dogs are spays…..but we would be open to a male if he were the right fit.  From what I’ve read in the forums I’m thinking I want to look specifically for a male. I have not done obedience in several years, but have found a club near me and my interest has been growing since starting my dobe search.  I’m going to visit the club next week and probably join even though I would have a dog to work just yet…..although I might take the pug just for kicks.

I’ve been trying to search out rescues.  For some reason I don’t find many near me with available dogs.  I thought there would be a lot since I’m close to MO.  We live in the country with a few acres and do not have a fence.  I thought I would say that up front as there are many requirements when it comes to fencing.  We have no plans to put up a fence.  Although they are convenient, they really take away from the views and one of the reason we like the country is for wide open space.  Nobody needs to council me on fencing  ….I really do understand both sides of the debate and this is where I stand, no fence, no plans to put one up. I don’t mind being turned down, I’ll just move on.  The right dobie will join our family sooner or later.  I’d prefer sooner, but as my daughter told me the other day, “mom, remember, patience is a virtue!”

 Anyone else near Lawrence, KS?

Welcome to the group from me (Paul) and Ziva and DJ here in Indiana.

Nice to learn so much about you and your family.  When the right doberman (or any dog for that matter) comes along, you just sort of know it.....your perfect dobe is out there, just waiting to be found.  Good luck on your search.

Welcome!  If I was in Kansas, I'd be calling Kansadobe!!  Awesome people, and great dogs.

Depending on your experience, you may be able to get away without a fence, but ANY good breeder is going to be hesitant unless they're fully comfortable with your training ability.  Same goes for rescues, many time it's a dealbreaker, because that's one of the big ways dog end up in rescue.  But if you can get someone to believe in your training ability, and figure out a plan for exercise without a fence etc. it can be done.

Best of luck!

Welcome and good luck on your search.  The lack of fencing will probably make it more difficult as a lot of places especially rescues & good breeders will stop there and not even bother to go futher with you but as you said...the right one will come along eventually.

Thank you KevinK & Lori.  Yes, I know.  I have talked with Doug @ Kansa this last week and he was willing to let one of his dogs come to me and his dogs are beautiful.  Honestly I had to tell him even though I would have loved one I could not afford to pay what he was asking.  We did go over the fencing issue and in the end he said he was comfortable with me.  I think that makes me feel just fine.  I really would like to give a dobe a nice home and a good "rest of his life".  The dogs I've adopted have been so very thankful for their nice homes you can just see it by the way they love you back!

Hello and welcome to GD. It's wonderful to have you. It is possible to find a breeder who will let you have a pup with no fence. I'm living proof. I searched high and low for a dog/pup and kept getting turned down by rescues and breeders because of no fence. But then I found a breeder who felt comfortable with placing a pup with me. I had to convince them thought that I was dedicated to exercising and training the pup properly and would take excellent care of it. Long story short, our boy Andre has been with us just under two weeks and we love him to pieces. So, don't give up hope. The right Doberman will find you :)

Thank you Sian!  I have this "rescue and take care of" kind of personality.  I'm not happy if I'm not taking care of something that needs me!   My boxers name was Harley.  Your guy has a great face!

K-Tron he is beautiful!  I feel like there are bad owners that have fences and bad owners that don't.  I know I am a good owner and have never lived in a place with a fence.  I have gotten 3 of my past dogs as puppies from breeders who show and title their dogs.  I have some question me initially, but then feel comfortable after talking.  And I believe when it's the right dog things fall into place.  Things have happened like that for me many times in the past.  Sometimes it's so hard to wait.  I can really understand the person who gets a puppy from the closest, cheapest source because they get frustrated with the process.  Being a bit older now and having been through many situations in my life I can force myself to be patient   It always pays off in the end.  I'm glad you got your puppy!

And let me add to this so I'm not misunderstood.  Let's say I have $2500.00 to spend on a dog.  Dog #1 is a beautiful 2 yrs old, already had formal training, perfect health, breeder backing and ready to go.  Dog cost $2300.00.  I have $200.00 left to spend on extras or donate to shelter/rescues and my dog is in top shape.  Dog #2 is a 2-4 yr old rescue/re-home.  Cost is $500.00.  Dog is up to date on shots, altered, not had a great life.  I now have a wonderful dog that needs me, is very happy to have a family, loves to please and I get to train him and develop that lifetime bond, however long that life may be.  AND I have $2000 left to buy lots of extras and donate to shelter/rescue as well as I start out ahead if there are medical problems.  So this is where I'm coming from as far as an initial purchase price.  It's not that I COULDN'T buy a dog for that price, it's that I couldn't JUSTIFY it to myself when that money can go so much further spent a different way.

BTW dog #1 would be worth every penny!  In a perfect world I would own both dogs.

Hi and welcome, I adopted Benjaman Franklin a.k.a. Gentle Ben the rottweiler, he is 7 almost 8 years old now and a wonderful loving dog - he loves the cats and the chihuahua and bonded instantly to my male collie who unfortunately died 6 weeks later, but Ben made the collie the happiest dog possible in the last 6 weeks of his life; I love Ben so much. His adoption fee was $350 very minimal - he did have skin allergies and was heartworm positive, we did not care we adopted him anyway. I felt the same way as you, I had picked out a handsome rottie puppy with health guarantee etc. and was prepared to go get him when I chose Ben, I always rescue instead of purchase so I could not bring myself to lay down money for a puppy from a breeder when so many good dogs need homes and I thought I was saving myself $2500 at the same time - not so - Ben it seems has an immune disorder not skin allergies and although his heartworm has cleared up he is on very expensive chemo meds daily and constantly seeing a dermatologist specialist - so far since August not including the $350 adoption fee we have invested $4500 in Ben and his care, would I have it any other way - NO WAY, he is great, what I am showing here is don't make your choice based on money and savings with a rescue adoption - make it only because you want to rescue and be prepared to go to the ends of the earth if their health demands it. Rescue is so heart warming and rewarding for both human and dog but always keep in mind that they may cost you more than a health guaranteed dog, which is still not a guarantee, and they may drain your bank account in the blink of an eye, then again they may never need a major vet visit, but being a rescue they are usually older and therefore showing more signs of age related disorders that do require funds, but age related things come with all dogs.

Uncle Ben the rottie and I give you a big yodel and hug for rescuing!!!! These dogs are so deserving of a forever home filled with love instead of uncertainity. Thank you for making that choice..... Tal

Thanks Tal, you are correct in everything you said.  Cassie, my pug has her right eye intact...so she may be able to focus on me even better   At least on healing!

BTW...in the last two years my 3 rescues have not have any vet costs other than regular maint.  I've been very lucky with that!

Welcome SonLight, I wish you well in your search. I enjoyed your justification you are so right. All of my furbabies have been rescues one way or another. i have two sons that could never pass an animal on the street in need. Good luck in your search.

Oh dear apologize to Cassie for me thinking she was a male, hahahaha, I am envious of your lack of rescue vet bills, hahahahaa, it comes with the territory; you know even though Ben has cost so much we actually learned of all these costs after the 3rd week of having him, we could have sent him back but it never crossed our minds, he is here for the long haul he is such a clown, but even though his issues are what they are we are looking into adopting another collie, are we gluttons for punishment to the bank account or what, hhahahaha, I just adore collies and although I am on a list for a dobe girl in October I may choose to go the collie route instead - it's looking that way. There was a collie hoarder here locally who had 32 collies and a collie rescue has taken them in slowly and have already placed several, they are friendly and dog friendly obviously but right now they have 6 puppies that are 3 months old and 4 are males; I decided that puppies are work but collies are really not work, love that about them, considered adults but thought maybe the rottie would prefer to "raise" this little bugger instead being face to face with another adult. Will also be enrolling in dog obedience with or without a collie, I will be taking Ben just to keep him out and about and around other dogs.

I bet Cassie will steal the show at obedience you will have to take pictures - we live for pictures around here, I want see her doing her thing in class, can't wait to hear all about your dogs....

You will enjoy obedience.  It's fun to just have that time out with your dog and interact with other people and their dogs.  Collie's are very pretty.  I had some say to me once when they looked at my sheltie rescue....."oh, I didn't think they came that small".  She's a bigger sheltie....they thought she was a collie.   Yes I love pictures too!  I'm getting used to how to post but I will try.  I love the size of your Ben.  He looks like a big bear!  A huggable bear.  My co-worker got a rottie pup about 2 months ago.  He is 5 months old and 60lbs.  Super huggable!

Cassie is a clown.  And such a love.  I will probably always have a pug.  We got her at 11 months from the rescue.  She was picked up from an auction in Texas with several other pugs in bad shape.  Her eye was so infected the rescue had the vet take the eye out when she was spayed.  Most people can't even tell....unless they really look because of her black face.  Or if you through a ball to her left. She still waits for you to through it because she didn't see it!  She is such a good girl.

So you have a sheltie rescue?? How rewarding that must be. I would love a link, I volunteer with the Rottie rescue I got Ben from because we loved him so much we just couldn't imagine "ben's" being euthanized just because they were rottweilers so I volunteered and I love it.

Ben is a big boy he is weighing in at around 115lbs. now. I think he needs to lose a few pounds to save his hips in the future. But he is such a clown, he yodels when he gets excited, yodels when he sees people he wants to pet him and he wants EVERYONE to pet him. He is a little grumbly about the food bowl and his bones but other than that he is terrific. His head is the size of our standard chihuahua! I will keep you posted on how we do in obedience, I will wait till weather stays nice so I don't miss any classes.....

Tal....His head looks bigger than a chihuahua! No, I do not have a sheltie rescue....my sheltie was rescued from a puppy mill raid and the dogs were taken to my local shelter.  So I guess I do have a sheltie rescue....but just one

Thanks Kate, you are not tardy at all!  I'm enjoying this forum.  I joined 3 dobe forums yesterday and one of them I have yet to get any kind of welcome from anyone on the forum.  Kind of strange for it being over 24 hours.  I guess they don't like new people coming aboard.

I am looking forward to participating more.....I can't be much help to others but I can ask alot of questions.

Try Kansas City Doberman Rescue  www.kcdoberescue.com I have heard that they can be difficult, but I read a little of their policies and it says that no fence is not a deal breaker.

Sonlight our chihuahua is actually the "regular" standard size not the toy, goodness a toy would fit in his mouth; Pepe' is about the size of a large cat so he has some size but Ben's head is really large, yet the chihuahua has been known to posture by standing on his hind legs and tapping Ben on the shoulder with his front feet, Ben is not too fond of that and grumbles, I do correct the chihuahua, he used to do this to the collie who totally ignored him and that really frustrated Pepe but Ben's reacting seems to be fueling this posturing. I am so thankful that Ben is so tolerant of this little annoyance. Everybody gets 3 chances around here on the 4th one they get a time out to refocus. So far Ben 2 time outs Pepe Chihuahua 20 or so time outs, hahahahahaa who's the difficult breed??? hmmmmmm..... too funny about the sheltie rescue

I just wanted to say I was bored tonight and chose to look at EVERYBODY's dober pics on this topic thread, great dogs!!!!!

Absolutely love Ziva's pics she is so beautiful; Sofia is like an apparition she is so ethereal; Zelda is darling; K-Tron stately (the first 2 pics wouldn't display is that on my end?); Ellie the cavalier way too cute; Loki, HarleyBear, Rocky and Dakota look like little trouble makers, hehehe but then again one is named Loki and loki was a trickster, I seriously do get to have a dobie fix when I come in here and see all these pics. Lovely dogs guys just lovely......Keep adding pics to your galleries so I can keep snooping.....

Jeri thank you!  Yes, I did notice that.  In looking at the websites of several rescues I saw one that actually wanted names and phone numbers of your childrens school teachers.  I'm sorry but that's going too far for my comfort.

Tal....well I thought I knew about most breeds....but I have to say I was not aware there was a standard size chi.  I thought they were all the toys.  I have heard some smaller breeds have a big dog attitude.  My little two do not.  They are lovebugs who so far love everyone they've met, dogs or human.  In fact, I about fell down laughing when my little banty rooster came behind my pug and chest-butted her on her backside.  Trying to be the dominant one.  Cassie turned around and gave a look like "what in the heck was that??"  Then walked off.

hahahahaha too funny about the rooster butting. If you click on "Talisin's Critters" under Photo Gallery below my pic you will see lots of pics of the chihuahua and his size in comparison to my collie and the rottie. They are not called "standard" they are just chihuahua's it's the smaller ones that have the addition of "teacup" I believe. But most people understand standard means normal sized and not reduced, hahahahaha......so have a look around in my pics and you will see a regular chihuahua, but then again nothing about him is regular he is in so much trouble all the time, :))
