First of 4 Intermediate Classes for DJ
We had our first class in the Intermediate level of Obedience tonight---leading up to 'off leash' training. Tonight we learned two styles of turning 180 degrees while walking with the dogs at heel. First one was an 'outside' turn, meaning we walked in a straight line, dog heeling in position, then just turned a quick, tight turn keeping the dog on the left side. Deej had that one conquored from the get go. Second style was an 'inside' turn, where we walk in a straight line, then turn into the dog making a tight 180 degree turnaround, and pass the leash quickly behind the back and have the dog immediately on the left side, still heeling without missing a beat. Took ME longer to learn that move than it took DJ to figure it out. She really loves learning in a class environment. We practiced those moves for quite some time, getting tips and pointers from the instructor. The last thing on tonight's agenda was to be facing the dog who is in a sit position, and give a hand signal and 'heel' command, making the dog walk around behind the handler and end up sitting at the left side. That was harder for DJ to pick up on,because she always has just done a quick jump/flip from sitting facing me to sitting beside me on the left. I personally like the flip better, but I want her to know and be good at both styles. Next week we have class in a park, and are supposed to bring a 30 ft long line for long distance sit and down training....and who knows what else. Very good class, excellent instructor. He has a GSD named Jag that is doing a 'refresher' course right along with our dogs. DJ's best dog friend is in the class with us, and she actually stayed very focused on me and the commands instead of her doggie friend, even when they were heeling going opposite directions and passing very close to each other. YAY DJ!!! Cant hardly wait for next week's class.
Such good news..
Such a good girl.. D.J. is coming along so quickly. Just love the updates we get on her and all the success you are enjoying. She seems to know instinctively what's expected of her.. and oh Paul.. I can just picture you doing the 'yippee-skippee' dance when she preforms so well.
It is so awesome when they love school and learning, you can just tell by how they look at you expectantly waiting for the next command. Yeah, I tried to do a rally class with Kaiser and I couldn't coordinate the moves, he kept looking at me, like Mom what the heck are you doing! My poor dog.... I am so happy for you and her, it is great to watch them succeed. Kaiser starts his agility Sept 11, I am so excited! This appears to be something that is way more our style. Although the class is at 8:30, I hope I can stay awake.... : ) Good Job DJ!
@Kaiser---funny you should mention that "look". My wife snapped this pic of DJ during class last night. She really DOES love learning new things. She was so focused on what I was saying, it almost gave me goosebumps! LOL

she is so grown up and such a beauty. The class is lucky to have such a smart girl with them, if dogs truly pick up on other dogs behavior then everyone will excel with her in the class :))
That is so cool and a very impressive thing to see. They love focusing on a task and especially, pleasing you. You must feel so proud!!! Ginger don't do nothin' and I'm proud! :)
