For personality?  I thought I had read something on one of the forums about reds being “goofy”?  Is that in a good way?  What have your experiences been with temperaments when it comes to colors?

Colors have nothing to do with the temperment of the dog from what I have read and seen. Others I am sure will post much more information :)

I don't know FOR SURE if this answer is correct, I've only had one Doberman and Sofia is a fawn.

I have written to other fawn owners and they express the same thing. They have an almost surreal and ethereal quality to them. They are as gentle as their name sake and very laid back..

I've heard from other redhead owners that they are mischievous and that the gorgeous black and rusts are sassy. But I really and truly don't know.. I'm looking forward to reading more from the various owners.

in my opinion.. most pets take on the qualities of their owners..

I don't believe color has anything to do with temperament. Temperament is partially inherited and is also influenced by socialization and early experiences. I've had two blacks in the past, both males. My first Dobe, Chance, was very sassy (dominant personalitied) and would back talk and was very challenging.  It was a constant battle to maintain the role of pack leader as he was constantly challenging my position as pack leader. He had a goofy clownish side and was also very loving and affectionate. My second Doberman was also black and was VERY laid back. Nothing bothered him. He was perfectly content with his lower pack status and never challenged me or anyone for that matter. Everyone he met was his friend. He was very easy and a just a complete joy to own. Now I have Andre. He is a red male. Hard to say at this point exactly what his temperament is/will be, as he is still young at only three months old. So far, he is VERY affectionate, eager to please, cautious with people he doesn't know-especially children, and sensitive. I work with him everyday and socialize, socialize, socialize. Both my blacks were very smart and Andre is proving to be the same-very smart and is learning quickly.

All of my Dobe have been/are velcro dogs. They all followed me through the house and so does Andre. Some aspects of personality/temperament are breed characteristics and others are inherited, and still others are influenced by socialization and early experiences. So, No, IMHO color has nothing to do with it :) However, others may disagree  ;)

I know the only dog breed that most vets in my area agree on color having anything to do with personality was the lab - chocolates were the clowns and totally goofy not easy to train, the yellows were laid back lovable and overall good dogs, the blacks were stubborn and fiesty.

I have heard dober people locally say that they stick with a particular color because of the personality and I have to say that my experience in the vet hospital the black/rust were always more difficult to handle the reds were aloof and tolerant - at the time those were the only colors around here.

Whether it really is a color thing or an owner thing I have always thought a dog would mirror their humans, but the labs I am about to agree with, hahahahaha

Through the years I have heard this about several breeds.  Whether it’s a difference in coat type (long-hair dachshunds vs. wire-hair ones) I’ve also heard the color in standard poodles makes a difference.  The brown/chocolate color is the clown is what I had heard.  Just thought it might be an interesting topic for dobes too.

Like Lady K, we have only had one dobe so one color.  He is a beautiful red...goofy and loveable and discerning.  If he knows you are a friend then he will shower you with kisses and butt wiggles.  But if you are a stranger you will be greeted with a ground rumbling growl until I say friend or foe.

I haven't seen the dobie super intelligence yet, maybe he just doesn't have the drive, but he is a total velcro dog.

My redhead girl is firey with a sweet aftertaste :P She gets way excited when she meets new people that I have to force her to sit down multiple times before letting the other person pet her with treats 'n stuff. Zelda's my first dobe, so I can't say what the other colors' temperaments would be, but my next doberman would definitely be a black male :P

Well Harley is also our first dobe. He is a black and rust and is the most easy going love bug out there! He is super smart and very in touch with how I am feeling. ie if I'm upset he goes even more gooey than usual if I'm nervous or scared he is my fearless protector! He is also the biggest clown and goofball I have ever met! As I am typing he just walked up and rested his head on my arm! lol. Well thats my experience with a black/rust :)

Well, I have had 14. Seven Red & Rust, six Black & Rust and one Fawn and Rust. Yes all Dobes have to have the rust markings even though we don't always spend the keystrokes to put that color in. I have had various personalities in all of the colors. Most of my males were for the most part laid back unless they detected something out of the ordinary going on at which point they would step forward and let others know they were there.

My first red was a male, and very laid back and a goof ball. My other Dobe at the time was a black female, and she was two years old when I got the red male. She was the watchdog and Hans almost never barked, just standing back and watching her - until Windy had her first litter of puppies, and then Hans changed and he was the one patrolling the windows and barking at strangers (one or two, sometimes three, but rarely if ever more). When the puppies, left, he let Windy take back over and he assumed once again the back up role.

When I lost Windy to cancer at 7, Hans was 5 and I was fortunate to have him for another 6 1/2 years. Again, he was the leader of the four legged crew, and his laid back days were over, except when it was all quiet and he wanted to be with me.

My next male was a black and the some of Hans and a black female name Trudy that I got when Hans was 7. Willy was a goof ball, but then he was outlived by his mother who once again became the leader of the pack when Hans passed due to kidney failure at the age of 11 1/2. I lost Willy to cancer at the age of 8 and Trudy the next year. He was never the lead dog, as Trudy became that when I lost Hans, and she outlived Willy. I recently saw Princess take that role over after I lost Red last summer. It's too early to tell with Jake as he is just a happy go lucky puppy (5 1/2 months old).

I think a lot of the personality depends on breeding, (you want a good natured dog) and the environment in which he is living. They do want to be in the house with their people, and if given a lot of love, they will return it 10 fold. If he/she is in a household with a lot of youngsters and young adults, then they are more inclined to be very playful. As the humans in the household get a little older, the Dobe will tend to mirror that. But, they always have a great deal of what the military calls SA. Situational Awareness. They know what's going on, and if they perceive a threat, they will change before your eyes, to an aggressive protective animal. Once the perceived threat leaves, then they are back to their happy go lucky, lap dog persona.

In my almost 30 years with Dobes, I have seen that occur three times.

SonLight, I have had both colors my first dobie was a red/rust very smart always alert not goofy at all. My second dobie is a black/tan was a little clumsy as a puppy, but by 2 1/2 he started working through it (with training). He's now 4yrs old and not any more. Getting a red/rust female this Saturday ,and they say females are a little harder. But i personly feel that every dobie is differant. Thats my opinion, just love the breed no matter what color or sex.

Rolo is my first doberman and he is red and rust. He is very intelligent and an absolute clumsy clown. So much so he fell over and rolled into my mum and nearly knocked her over!

Kaiser - if you figure out how to get the stubbornness out of him, please post. I have never succeeded in that at all. But then my mother pointed out that I'm a German hard head too (thanks to her side of the family). I just figured that they are German dogs and thus hard headed (like my Min. Schnauzers - also a German breed).

Rgreen I have no idea, my boyfriend who has been around dogs all his life, said he has never seen a dog so persistent and stubborn as Kaiser.  i.e. if you take a toy away and hide it he will stalk you and the area where you hid it for an extended period of time.  He has growled at cabinets and shelves b.c he knows it is in there lol.  I really need to video tape it.  I didn't know germans were hard headed, now it makes sense.

I have had several over my lifetime, Deeks is my first red and rust.  He is also my first male.  He is definitely very different from what I remember my black and rust girls being.  Could be color, sex, or both.  All of my girls were smart and laid back, I really don't even remember them as being barkers.  Only one was a velcro dog, which was bad at the time because was also a bed wetter and she slept with me!  It took her a few years to outgrow that.

Deeks is my sweet, lovable, and totally goofy guy.  I would not trade that for anything.  He is with me where ever I am.  When I am washing dishes he sits behind me with his chin on my butt, when I am typing on the computer his chin is resting either on my forearm or shoulder, when I go the the bathroom...well, he's there too.  He once sat on my lap while I was sitting on the toilet and I pushed him off and said "can't I even have some privacy when I am on the pot?"  (like he could understand, right?)  Now he will still come into the bathroom with me but when I reach for the TP he will turn around and sit with his back to me....swear to god, he does it every time.

He also likes to look out our dining room windows and I have a single plant (artificial) on each sill.  He knocked them off a few times and I would pick them up and shoo him away from the window.  After a few times of that, I kept finding the plants sitting on the floor beneath the window in the upright position, which I found odd.  I finally caught him in the act...he takes them off the sill and sits them on the floor so he can look out the window.  Now, if I could only teach him to put them back on the sill when he is done :).

Oh, the stories I can tell.  He is a great dog, goofy, very intelligent, loving, and a god send to me.  He has had a lot of socialization from day one, his parents were both very social, he and I went through obedience training with an excellent instructor (1:1 and then group), and he is walked daily to help with his energy levels.

I am not sure how color or gender affects, or if it affects,

the personality but I do believe that socialization, training and exercise definitely do.

I am curious to know if there really is something to do with color and personality of the dog. We have 2 red and rust Dobie’s. (but we just lost our male 2 weeks ago :()

Our female is super sweet and huge goofball. She does get the butt wiggles too. It looks like she is winding herself up from the bottom and eventually gets so wound up she is falling over.

Now for my male Dobie he wasn’t a goofball and he was a red and rust. He was very protective of the family but would sit on my feet if another guy was around me. (I’m a female) He also never barked unless he felt there was a reason for it. So, for us, color didn’t seem to matter.

Gideon is black and rust and is pretty laid back when he doesn't have the zoomies. My horse, on the other hand, is a chestnut (red) mare and she has an attitude! Apparently color does matter in the equine world, as I hear nothing but horror stories about chestnut mares now...
