I'm always running across names that seem to fit the breed; and, for me, it's hard to recall when you have that new pup that needs to be named Today! Or at least by tomorrow! Might be nice to know where a list is, if nothing more than creating a spark!

Top of my list for dobes is ...

Sage (it's in the eyes)
Laser (seems to fit)

Any one else?

We loved the name Axel... and that was Cisco's original name- but we switched it at the last minute because my husband is a HUGE jesse james fan.

For girls I love Willow... I had a list of about 30 names for girls... but I lost it! Need to find it before we get our girl next year some time....

Apollo and Zeus were the dobes on Magnum PI. I like the name Shadow because they are truly velcro dogs!

I love all the names we have here on the Forum.. I think it's because they 'fit' so well..We thought of a hundred different names for our girl until we actually adopted her... then it could only be Sofia because of her elegant and classy demeanor. She was Chica Tika when rescued and who knows what the people who let her go called her.. Probably "Doberman 753". We think our lovely lady was used as a breeder and was let go for whatever reason they deemed necessary. What a lucky day for us that was!!

Axel is Steve's cousin.. and its a hard one around kids (and some drunk people...) because it often sounds like "as---".  ;)

I'm very fond of people names myself.  And I have had to make a list of "possible kids names" because I don't want to end up naming a puppy something that should've been the kids!

I've always had to meet the dog before I could name them.  You can have the best name in the world picked out and when you see them and look in their eyes, you just don't see it....

I would have liked Jax rather than Rocky but since I got to pick the pup, he got to pick the name..:)

Okay not to sound bad but I LOVE 2 of my dogs names and they were named by my kids. Everytime we have a litter I let them pick a puppy and name them. So far the names have stuck...Romeo and his mother Paris! We bought a dog from New Jersey who came with the name Boo not that we were fond of it but we couldn't decide on anything else as a family. So she is stuck with the name. Cute though she was named after the movie monsters inc and the little cute girl in it was named Boo. Plus she was born right before Halloween. She even has her own special designed Wetcoat for hot weather that says Boo all over it lol.

I also like common people names for the dogs such as Steve luv it!

I can understand that. Red's registered name is Erich (Baron Erich von Redmon). Unfortunately I can't use that around the Scouts, for it seems that our group always includes at least one Eric or Erik. Different spelling, but sounds the same.

Actually Princess is the first Doberman I have named. My late sister used to name them. She always seemed to come up with a good sounding name.

Speaking of kid/dog names. My middle daughter had a baby the middle of November. She has a Chihuhua that she adores and LOVED the name AVA. She wishes that she wouldn't have used it on the dog and she could have named her baby that. I think Ava was a cute baby name and it made a cute dog name.

Jes- That is a big reason we changed Axel to Cisco... we had a few drunnk friends laugh and say that... we have picked 3 girl names... for when we get a girl, Raven, Ivy, and Harlow... but it will probably not rnd up being any of those....

I have always liked the name from greek mythology. Like Athena, Zesus, Siren, Pandora(which is my girl's name), Isis just different things. If I was going to go for a more of a people name I think I would have my girl Lily.

I tend to name my dobies unusual names.  My first dobie, a black female was named Bianca (this was during the 70's when Mick & Bianca Jagger were very famous).  I've had doberman names of Blitz, Levi Blue, Dusty Blue, Summer, & Sundown.  Then many years went by and my dobie I got 7 years ago was named Darmok, after a character in a Star Trek episode, and my current dobie is named Ziva, after the Israeli agent on the NCIS tv show.   Yes, I know, it's weird.  LOL

I agree with Dobiegirl, I love Greek mythology, and usually end up going with something in that realm.  Although, Kratos' name came from a game where the protagonists' name was Kratos which stood for power and strength. I must admit it fits my boy amazingly...I was thinking of in a couple years getting out black/tan female and naming her Aphrodite, but I'll only know for sure when I see her...

Hmmm, if Skye hadn't been a girl, her name would have been something butch... like Roscoe, or something proper... like Theodore. But it could have also been something cutsey, like Tigger. Other names we had picked out for a girl but got voted off the island were; Corey, Siesta, Roxy, Andy, Kia, Armada, and Georgia.

We were planning for a girl.

It's lots of fun to pick names I love some of the suggestions on here Raven, Mick and Bianca, I also like Zivas name, Georgia and Lily...I'll have to write all these down for our next one.

I was wondering what JJ stood for. I love some of the names my (and JJ's) breeders..

Martino was Cisco's Sire... Willey (JJ's right?)  Amodeo, Obi,

She has a pup there now whose mama decided she didn't like his ear crop and chewed his ear til infection... needless to say he has one ear- She kept him and named him Uno.... Bella the Dam is being spayed she said- and is going to be the lady of leisure in the house now....

JJ's another favorite of mine. It just rolls off the tongue.

What a fun subject Broyles! I'm loving all the names that people are suggesting and I think it will be great to have this in file so we can refer to it later.

I ended up liking the name that my youngest daughter picked for Romeo didn't at first but it grew on me. My husband on the other hand HATES the name and refuses to call him that unless he is in trouble. Kind of like for those of you that have kids and you call out the entire name when you mean business lol. My husband always wanted to name him Opie so that is what he calls him Opie! So needless to say Romeo answers to Bud, Buddy, Romeo, baby boy, and Opie.

Opie was one of the names I loved. We watch Sons of Anarchy on FX and that is my favorite character... I also Like Caine or Abel (also from SOA)....

Our neighbors dobe is Bain.... I like Gemma (SOA)

Growing up, the 2 dobes next door were Colonel and Erika. (where my fascination began!)

My good friends Red male who just past away after a long battle w/ cancer was Killian...

I love Ethnic names for girls and found a great site and have about 30 picked out from it in case our top 3 don't work out when we do get our female. (THough if we rescue and we like her name it will probably just stay.)

Keep the names coming folks - this is such a great thread!

My best friends son is Jackson and they call him Jax and my cousin's GSD is Jax... (both pre-SOA).. So that was out for us... I am now leaning towards Gemma as front runner for our girl... Hubby still likes Ivy... Step daughter likes Raven because of That's so Raven from Disney...

My husbands dober mix is Gypsy and his son says Gyspy Jr... I try to explain girls aren't juniors... Try arguing that point with a 10yr old!

The first Doberman I got as a puppy was a red male. I brought him home at 8 weeks and Windy reached down to sniff at him and he took exception to her sticking her big nose in his face and jumped up and bit her on the neck. I started calling him Tiger, and when it came naming time, of course a good German name suggested by my sister was Hans. He became Hans Tigre von Samson. His daddy was Samson so named because he was the sole survivor of a litter of about 8. (Parvo and Mama). I started calling him Hansy.

I had always loved Daisy as a name for a dog... Always thought that someday we might have a golden or even a boxer.. Then along came this golden girl and there was no way we could call Sofia Daisy... it just didnt' work.

There is someone on another forum who called her black and rust, totally GORGEOUS girl, Audrey (after Hepburn) with the long elegant neck, and classic black dress..

I know I could look at thousands of names (and BTW Mandy, thank you for that name list.. amazing choices) and never settle til I saw the dog.

I know for sure I'll never have a "Tippy" or a "Spot" Ooopsss.. now I probably offended Tippy's people!!

What a list! Reading over and seems like everyone has a few that just reach out like a magnet.
Rnd I thought Zorro was a great strong name for the black males swift, sharp and without reservation!
Ziva, wouldn't change that for anything! But wouldn't a sweetheart like that be well named as Willow.
Dawn is my favorite time of day. And I'm really fond of the Spanish language...strong vowels that roll of well too. Our jet black Afghan is Maya, and we had her sister until she had to be put down this summer. She was Kia. Also had a female Dobe, Zena.
How about El Nino (don't know how to add the tilde) oh and Bruja (witch).
Well, I'm just rambling right on...you guys have probably skipped this and on to the next one!
Happy New Year ! Best to All...

Axle is our sons name, however, we ended up with a female, but my husband and I thought "Crank Shaft" was something different for a boy.  Of course my husband and I are both in the automotive industry.  We named "Shelbi" after the mustang there really aren't any female car parts.

Gypsy always have liked that and another personal favorite is Hawk. I knew a male black-mask red Afghan puppy named Cruise or Cruiser forgot which, but either would work. Could be spelled Cruz (Spanish) but name meaning would become the Cross. Just thought of another, Mija, which means my little girl.
Ive known a couple of Australian Shepherds named Moon.
And our list goes on...
Hope you will continue to add. We are compiling a good resource list:)

Well, my own preference would be a name that the dogs originate from XD;; And how their personality is or their color/pattern based on my previous dogs' names. (Chief, our GSD, Patch, our Silver/White min Poodle, and Shadow, our late dog that was a Chow mix who was a great guard dog!)

Like, Zelda means "Woman Warrior" in German according to babynames.com. Game-wise, Princess Zelda holds the "wisdom" piece of the tri-force, so hey! It TOTALLY fit the breed and her name :D so I thought it was PERFECT for my feisty little Princess Zelda here lol. She just won't back down from a fight! (Even though it was behind my leg barking at my seasoned-fighter cat Mark LOL)

The name Zelda just fits dobies so much, no matter what color, right?

Yes? No? XD

You know, I like lots of names for Dobes that start with the letter Z. I guess because
it's a strong first sound..?
Zack
Zelda
Zena
Ziva
Ziggy (Twiggy ...anyone besides Katie)
Zorro
Zanadu (spell check popped up on this one) someone correct it!
Voodoo (still fairly strong initial sound)

When I get the other fifteen high priority jobs done, I'm going to come back thru this thread and alphabetize all we've listed into one post. That way we can print off one page instead of using tons of ink. It may be three years down the road! But, now on the list!

Thank you all for the well wishes!

We will be able to see the litter as much as we want to.  The breeder lives about 10 minutes from our house and she has told us we are always welcome to visit her, her dogs, and the puppies!  I have to say she is quite amazing.  When we went to visit her while looking for a breeder she welcomed us into her home and we stayed for 3 hours talking dogs and puppies.  While we were there I asked her if she had a puppy application and she said we were doing it right now and that people can say anything on a piece of paper.  I emailed her earlier this week on the status of our puppy...we were supposed to get a puppy from Cookie but there was only one black male that was already accounted for so we had to wait for Wonder to have her litter which was due on the 6th of January.  All of her dogs are amazing and very well behaved but Wonder holds a special place in my heart.  She is a certified therapy dog and a dog of merit!  Which I think it would be amazing to have a therapy dog, especially a doberman....really helps change peoples perception of the breed.

Here is her website for anyone who wants to take a look...Wonder is on the upcoming litters 2 page.

www.lyndobe.com

Cisco-Obviously we really like the greek names as well ( My father is greek) and I also like the name Tula (from my big fat greek wedding lol)

LadyKate- Thank you Thank you!  Athena did not come from this breeder, I am ashamed to say she came from a less then special breeder...we haven't had any problems due to this however, we have learned from our mistakes and spent a lot of time finding a breeder that was responsible and have waited several months for a puppy from her.  We are very very excited, we are expecting the first few months to be hell with potty training in the summer to have 1 yr old and a new puppy.  But once he grows up a little we are hoping he will help with Athena's energy level and that she will help show him what is acceptable behavior and what is not!

Control-Freak - We are getting our girl in April... It's confirmed we are on  the list at a better breeder than we dealt with the first time... We researched her and  have been in contact with her for a month or so now. I am going to see her in the next couple of weeks. She is about an hour from us. She is who I wanted to go to in the first place - but had no pups available and I had puppy fever. A lady she breeds with does but the pups werent ready until end of november... Long story short - we love Cisco and wouldnt trade him for anything but are happy to be going w/ a more reputable breeder, who does all the right things.

I have been told to wait by some until Cisco is a little older, but I talked with her and my trainer and they think it will help w/ the kid and his high strung, strong drive... I am thrilled! So looks like you and I will have lots to talk about and compare in the coming months. Cisco will be about 8 months old and fixed when we get her and done w/ his classes... So  Dita, Ivy, Raven, Talon, Harlow, (lol) is on her way and we are thrilled! We told her that we prefer a black female but if one is not available we will take a red... I just want a female for my boy so he can have a playmate!

Fantastic thread!  My mom has a cousin in the netherlands that breeds and shows dobes, all their dogs have names like Smirnoff, Kalhuah...those are the only two I remember but you can see the trend!  Pretty cool.

I also love gearhead names, like Chevy/Chevrolet, Deisel, Harley, Tundra, Sierra, Mercedes, etc.
