Hi all!!

I'm new on here as I am about to become the proud owner of my first Dobe!! However I am not a new dog owner and have owned dogs of different breeds all my life. I have also fostered large breeds the odd occasion for a local shelter. I have always had boy dogs in the past and currently have a boy (neutered) Jack Russell and a female (spayed) shih-tzu. They get on well and my male dog socialises daily with other male and female dogs of all breeds at training and out walking. I originally wanted another male but have been put off a little by people saying they are more vicious, indepenant, hard to train etc. etc. Whilst I am a resposnible owner and take my dogs training regularily (i compete in agility) I am now a little concerned that I have made the wrong decisions. Just after some advice from well seasoned Dobe owners as to whether you would recommend a male for a first time Dobe owner and the highs and lows of owning a male or female to help me make the right decision. As I said previously I have always owned male dogs as I love their characters and find them generally more biddable.

Would love your opinions!

Jo (and the doggy pack!!) :-)

Hi Jo ( and pack) Welcome to the forum

That's a really good question and one I cannot answer, but I am interested in what comes back from some of the other forum contributors with more knowledge and experience than I.

When are you 'expecting'?

IMO,

Girls tend to mature much faster, or at least that's how it's been for me.  My boy right now is quite a pain in my butt sometimes but he makes up for it in how affectionate he is.  Girl dogs that I have owned in the past have been a bit more standoffish so I do love the way he loves me.  Hope this helps...

"...people saying they are more vicious..."

Dobermans, male or female, are not vicious dogs.  I beg you, please refrain from using that term to describe the breed, unless sarcasm is strongly intended.  The Doberman stereotype is hard enough to overcome.

While there are generalized differences between the sexes, there are more differences between individual dogs.  For instance, while males tend to be larger than females there are 90 pound femails and 70 pound males out there.

Here I go again , slinging that 2 cents around .

A intact male will notice that 1 part in 100,000,000 of female pheromone floating in the air at which time he'll fly like a laser guided missle in that direction with amore in his heart .

On the other hand , an intact female will send in all directions , for all to ponder , the same pheromones , guiding them in like a strobe at the airport and landing patterns full .

Fixed , not as much flying and landing .

My personal preference is a female , as there is nothing to dodge while , or as you say "whilst" , I rub her belly .

As far as vicious , nah . Protective , possessive , loyal  and able to train us to do their bidding , They'er that .

Have fun and best of luck to ya !
