PIC REQ: Uncropped Ears

19 replies [Last post]

I am looking for pictures of older dobies without their ears cropped. My husband and I are still debating as to whether or not to crop Vega's ears at all. Does anyone have any pictures of their dobies with their natural ears?

There are quite a few here with natural ears. But I can't help, Ella's are cropped.

Look through "tell us about your dogs" and pictures that have been shared.  We have a good mixture of both.  I will say if you are thinking of doing therapy work, you may want to consider doing the natural ear.  It lessens the intimidation factor but also they have wonderful feeling natural ears.  Steve's brother has natural floppy ears and I love giving them a good rub down when I see him.

Oh you are so right about that. Having the natural ears may work better for a therapy dog in regards to the intimidation factor. Great point!

Well, I don't know about older dogs, but Reesie is almost 10 months old.  Here's a pic of him I took last week.  I really wanted to have his ears cropped, but the family out voted me.  Sometimes, I wonder what he would look like, but I love him so much I don't even think about most of the time.

Hope this helps!

Dakota was a year old in June...I think her ears make her look very sweet.  I always have people tell me that it makes her look less "scary" than a dobe with cropped ears.  That might be a consideration for service...but if you like the cropped look it's a bit of a gamble since you won't know until she's older whether she'll be right for service or not.

Anyways here are some recent pics:

Ponch has his natural ears and tail, too! It definitely softens the look. I think the cropped ears looks more sharp, regal and lends more to the watchful personality; but the natural ears gives a cuter look. Either way, they are gorgeous! The only issue, many people aren't able to identify him as a Doberman, especially because he is a red doberman. I often get asked, "what type of dog is that?" On the plus side, socializing him as been really easy, he looks much more approachable.

Oh such adorable pups! It's amazing how different they look with their natural ears! It really DOES soften them a lot. :) Adorable!

Caine had VWD so he remained natural

Well Laith is only a year old and these were taken in the last few months. Be prepared to defend why you didn't crop. Seriously, I want to record it and replay all day to people. I love his natural ear- and his/her personality WILL grow to where it fits the floppy look.

I posted a few pictures to show what the ears will look like. Most of the time you have the floppy ear. Then you will have the ears flipped back for whatever reason - dirt, wind got a hold of it. Or what Laith is famous for - the head out the car window. *disclaimer: he is safe - i promise.* Then the ears sometimes fly back and look like a half crop but not really... look. I see that ALOT with Laith when he gets really excited.

When he was younger some questioned his breed -- and I mean less than 10%. But there is no doubt when anyone sees him that he is a doberman. So don't worry about that. Mothers who don't run immediately away - do tend to comment they like the ears better natural.

I am not sure if it's his bloodline or the ears, but he does seem to have a longer face than most cropped dobermans. Maybe a little of both? It's a softer look. Both are great! But I am happy with the decision of not cropping.

Good call on adding the ear flip photos - I always forget to mention that!  Dakota's ears do that as well, especially when she's running around or excited, like you mentioned.

The reactions to the ears must depend on where you live I think, because I always get "Oh, I'm so glad you left her ears floppy!!"  Never ONCE have I gotten a "Why didn't you crop the ears, you ruined her!"  I think no matter what, a doberman is so striking that they always get comments from people, good or bad.  Sometimes I wish everyone would just mind their own damn business

Laith's coat looks AMAZING btw!!

Thank you! I love seeing a shiny coat in the sun. :)

We must live far away from each other then because I always hear it!! But most of the time it's nothing rude!

Ginger is a year old today and these were taken between 7mo and now. The flop deffinitely adds to her goofy charm, and there isnt a single person that has met her who hasnt comented on how adoreable her ears are. I am for cropping and flop, but the snuggly factor of flop is a deffinite plus for us ^.^

Thanks Lady Kate! So little confession: we own snuggies. And Laith is SO JEALOUS of my zebra snuggie since I got it has a birthday gift. Thinking about ordering him his own. What print should I get? haha!

Happy birthday, Ginger! If anyone has any extra pictures please let me know, we're also thinking about cropping our Dobermans ears, we've seen a few pictures but nothing major. Interested to hear about your experiences.
