Tomorrow we are taking Zoe in to get her ears cropped and I am a very nervous mommy! She is not taking it too hard that she can't eat or drink anything and she is napping now.  This is my first time with ear cropping, but my husband's second.  We have studied up and are very prepared for post-surgery care (we even made a European style headgear using the internet for the weeks to come to protect her ears when she wants to get rambunctious and play)!

Here are some pictures of Zoe on her last night with floppy ears!

She is a very beautiful puppy, and she is going to lose some of that baby look as soon as her ears are cropped.  It's amazing how much they change overnight on cropping day.  Good luck with the surgery and post-op.  Try not to worry----things will go great.  (I know this--- and still, I worried myself sick the day I left mine to be cropped)

She is such an adorable baby.. and Paul's right.. she will change over night.. I've never seen the head gear you posted.. let us know how it goes... post surgery posting is usually a HUGE topic here on the forum and folks will be very happy to hear your reports

Good luck, Zoe is a precious pup and will grow up to be a gorgeous DoberDiva.. ( and a lot quicker than you think!)

We dropped off Zoe around 8:30 this morning and before we left the vet's office, we were told she would have to stay overnight.  Both me and my husband did not like this idea, because we wanted to take care of her, but we also understood that they would take good care of her too.  The vets office said they would call us when she was done so we would know everything went alright and that Zoe was doing well.  By 3:30 in the afternoon, they still hadn't called, which led me to believe that they hadn't performed the surgery yet and Zoe had still not had anything to drink at least since the night before.  Not being too thrilled about this, I called the vets office and they updated me that she was now in surgery and not to worry because they would call after she was done and awake.

At approximately 5:30 this evening they called to let us know she was awake and doing well.  As for me, I'm still worried about my baby and am just worried she's afraid and in pain and alone.  This was my first time with ear cropping and I don't think it was the best experience possible.  My husband and I decided we will not be going back to this vets office because we felt unimportant, when to us, Zoe is very important and we want to find a vet that feels the same way.

I will update tomorrow when we can pick her up at 10:30am.

Thx for all the kind words and wishes, DobyZOE

Maybe this is just another time to reiterate that responsible breeders take care of this for their puppies and their owners so that you don't have to go through this part of it at all.  Just sayin'.

Where to begin....First of all, it's not uncommon for a vet to want to keep a dog overnight that has had full anesthesia.  They want to check their temp., incision etc. in the morning. Possibly with an ear crop, they may want to do their method of taping, etc. in the morning. Also, the dog will stay quiet and not be running around like at home.  Many many owners want to get their poor babies home and give them food and water right away, which will only make the dog nauseous.  Then they have a vomiting dogs on their hands all night long.

It's also possible that they had a truma case or two come in unexpectedly.  A hit-by-car case for instance can really eat into the day.  Unfortunately, the "elective" procedures have to get put on the back burner.  Just as you want your pup to have the best care, so do the people who's pet is in a life threatening situation.  If this was the case, they could have told you so that you would understand.  In a vet hospital, there are many scenarios that could delay an elective surgical procedure, and I'm guessing something like that happened.

Where I worked, for elective procedures, we had the owners call in themselves in the afternoon to check on their pets and schedule a pick up time.  The releases were done by the vets themselves in 99% of the cases, so the vet could be one on one with the owner in case of a bazillion questions, which there always are.  Of course if there were any complications about the procedure, or it was a difficult procedure, the vet would call the owners post op.

If you truly are feeling that the staff and/or the vet aren't giving your pup the proper attention or care,  then by all means discuss it with the vet.  The owner of the practice would want to know.  Good luck with the recovery and posting with your baby!

Zoe is home safely and resting peacefully on the couch next to me now.  Her ears look great and are taped well.  The vet and vet tech informed me not to retape/post for a week.  In one week we will bring her into the office to get retaped and posted there.  Her ears are sturdy and her incisions and sutchers look good.

Here is Zoe when I picked her up today!

Hi Happydance,

Thanks for all the info, those are definitely points that I had not thought of.  It's very insightful and helpful because I was feeling very upset last night, especially knowing that Zoe wasn't home.  My husband and I don't have human babies yet, but he said I was acting just like one of those worried mommies who lactate when their baby is sick or hurt.

I will add more photos of Zoe as she heals!

That is a HUGE e-collar!  You may want to look into something smaller that might make her more comfortable?  They have those nice inflatable ones at the petstore.  Just a thought!

I thought the collar was quite big too, but she seems to be doing well with it.  It also makes this record scratching sound when she shakes her head, kinda cool :-) And thanks, I will look into the inflatable ones.

So, Zoe's ears are doing well and I did my first solo posting today and I think it went well.  Only one thing, after taking out her stitches, my husband and I noticed she had these hard bumps on her ears from where the stitches had been.  I remembered when a friend of mine got a tongue piercing she developed a keloid. The piercer said to crush up an aspirin and let it desolve on her tongue and go figure, it helped.  The ingrediant in aspirin in salicylic acid, a drying agent found in Compound W for worts.  So, I got some and applied it to one ear and then posted...we shall see in a few days if it has helped any.

Has it been difficult cleaning and wrapping the ears?

I think she looks great so far.  Ears look like they are standing just right.  What size crop did you get?  Medium?

She is such a little cutie.

Thanks so much, we think she is just darling! We decided to go with a short to medium crop and I think it suits her very well!

It has been a little difficult with cleaning and I just did my first posting with her yesterday.  I had wrapped straws and cotton balls with tape and followed the pattern the vet did when he posted them in the office. It went pretty well and I'm going to clean and repeat tomorrow to see how my posting is holding up her ears.  She still has a good bit of healing to go through, but now that it's said and done, I think getting her ears done was the right thing to do!

And your pups are super cuties

I really like this picture of Zoe:

I just looks like she is smiling just for you. It's great! I just had to let you know.

I am also a fan of medium crops. I'm probably going that route with my soon to be pup Fletch.

Thank you so much! I find her smiling more and more, especially when I first wake up in the morning and going to the bathroom...she sits there and cocks her head to the side and smiles because she's so happy I'm awake
