Botox
Koda's earjob was not fantastic. Medium height cut and stand a little skew unless he's in the alert frame of mind. Has anyone ever used the Botox procedure to help improve the look of their Dobe's ears? I don't want to subject him to the discomfort, but he is just such a beautiful specimen and would look fantastic with ears that stood perfectly! Can anyone offer a bit of advice? Thanks in advance!
Um, first of all, how old is he? When were his ears cropped? The ears don't stand immediately, and can take several months of posting. Can you post a picture of him? There are great tips here for making the ears stand, and using Botox is not one of them. I'm not even sure it's safe. It would probably do more than cause him discomfort...He will be (already is) a beautiful dog, whether or not his ears are perfect.
WOW !!!
Well sounds like you either are trying to stir up trouble or you are truly misinformed.
Botox, if you didn't know, is used to FREEZE MUSCLES. So. How would that work on ears? That are cartilage?
BOTOX? Give me a break. I'll just about guarantee you that your dog isn't that vain that he thinks he needs "perfect" ears. I have used breathe-rite strips inside my doberman's lazy ear to help hold it up when she has a lazy day.
Thanks Abigail. Actually, my question was a tad misinformed. What I was meaning was not Botox, but using silicon- that would be equally shocking come to think of it. His ears were cropped at 3.5 months and healed quite quickly...I thought.
More importantly was your response to my inquiry. In retrospect, it deserved the other shocked comments. Your response to was handled respectfully, positively and you did remind me just how beautiful Koda is even if his ears don't stand perfectly. Thanks too, to the other shocked comments. They helped me put it all into perspective. He's gorgeous, and just as soon as I have my camera sorted, I'll post a picture. He's a big boy and has a 'goofyness' about him that's just a puppy thing I think and so cute! He's 11 months and so playful.
I do work with him doing obedience work and exercise everyday. He runs a lot and enjoys swimming in the ocean. It's great! My next question is about aggression. Does it kick in automatically or do I need to train him that way? He get's a little bit 'jacked up' when he see other dogs, but I am more interested that he ignores all the strays in our area. I have never owned a Dobe or any large breed dog for that matter and wonder just when I can expect to notice that he's becoming protective because at the moment he loves everyone who gives him any notice.
Thanks
Wait, wait, wait... did you just ask if you could train aggression INTO him??? With a Doberman, usually its either there or it's not. Most Doberman have an innate protectiveness that is already there. As for getting him to ignore other dogs, I got Skye to ignore them by squeaking her toy and getting her attention while we passed and when we passed them, she got the toy. If she even turned towards them, she got a very small pull on the leash to get her attention on me. It only took a week for her to get the hint.
How long did you post his ears? When was the last time they were posted?
Aggression should NEVER be "trained" into any dog--regardless of breed, and especially a doberman. Oh my...I have worked hard ever since I brought Ziva home at 8 weeks old to downplay any aggression tendancies. Aggression and protection are two totally different things, btw. I hope you really meant protection abilities and not aggression. As far as loving everyone and everything, that's not such a bad personality to have. I WANT Ziva to ignore other dogs.
I'm not sure that the OP meant "can I train it in to him"...
You notice a pup getting more protective at around 6 months old. However, aggression isn't what you want, and if it IS what you want, then you'd might as well have your pup PTS right now, because that's how "home trained aggression" ends. Aggression and trained protectiveness are completely different. If you want a protection dog, go to a reputable (?) PPD trainer.
not....touching....this....one....
So how's the weather up there Kev??
whoa! The questions you are asking are really setting up huge flags for anyone that has and loves Doberman's. Botox and silicone??? really??? would you get your 8 yr old daughter liposuction and a nose job if she didn't look perfect? And what Vet cropped them at 3.5 month?? that's a procedure that anyone should know should not be done after 12 weeks. The fact that your Vet did this shows they are in it only for the money and knowing they wouldn't stand can now sell you some other form of torture like injections that also cannot be good for them.
and Agression is not even close the the same as protection. Protection is barking at a stranger person at your door, growling when they aren't sure of someone or something. Agression is when for seeminly no reason they bite, attack, go after, etc. No one would EVER want to train agression that's just riduculous. Protection - ok, some dogs natually have it and some need some guidance. Get a trainer, you're questions show that you're knowledge of the breed isn't where is should be so neither would your ability to train be the best option. Get a professional...
Kate, it's getting prettttyyyyyy cold! Was in the teens last night!

Thank you for your response about aggression. Well really, I live in a beachfron village where cat burglers and petty crime is quite common and the motivation for getting Koda was for guard dog purposes and general protection. This is apart from the great family dog attributes Dobes have of course. So the day after I made the post to which you responded, I was walking down the beach with Koda and I had one of those proud Daddy moments, kind of like when he lifted his leg to have a pee for the first time. I always obseve beach activity, dogs etc when walking Koda. People where I live are not very informed, least of all conscious or considerate of others when they bring their dogs to the beach here, so one needs to be extra vigilent. So we passed an off leash Labrador 'type' dog which seemed to be in its owners control. About 50 yards past I suddenly heared an agressive growling dog running up behind us. I turned to see this Lab charging towards us fully 'jacked up' entering our space and within an instant Koda did a 180 degree midair turnabout, got between me and the Lab and from the depths of his belly let out one huge, deep gutteral growl and barked at this assailant. It fled!
And that was my proud moment. He was there to protect me! That's what I was talking about in my post. That's what I was waiting to see. He's got it! He's got it all and he's definitely got my respect!
Guys! Guys! Guys! relax about the Botox ok! It's a procedure that is not common where I live and now having guaged your responses has made me think twice, alright. So I have been a tad misinformed about certain things. Acquiring Koda was rather sudden and if I had come accross this site earlier I may have done things differently seeing how passionate you all are about your babies. So please relax about the Botox and silicone. It was something I had heared about which is why I put it to you guys. And it's great that sites like this exist, for this kind of thing.
If you're really serious abour your questions many are more than willing to answer. Seems lately we've had quite a few just ridiculous people show up on the site and make posts about things that were just so far out there we've just basically told them to go away, they are to stupid to own a dog. They were mearly trolls looking for a fight.
That being said, everone here is also very much a Doberman lover here and wouldn't hesitate to hurt your feelings if you mention doing something that just isn't right or could harm your dog. (like botex, etc.) that will not ever go over well on ANY site and certainly not here.
This site has many knowledgeable people that would love to help you and your dog. Look around through some of the threads and you can find an answer to most anything. If not, post it up and ask...
and Yes Protection is exactly what you just described on the beach. There's nothing wrong with some protective actions. Sometimes we just walk by someone that Rocky doesn't like...and I'll see his hair start to stand and that low guteral growl start very low and quiet as he watches. Once we're by he's fine and most people he just loves. But they usually know when there's something to be leary about. - Welcome to the site!
