Wow.. this is exciting. My Spanish teacher has over thirty rescued dogs in a big compound funded partially by a SanDiego facility, private donations and such. She is a licensed vet and very compassionate woman.. She had recently fostered a two year old male Doberman ... It is about the right time for Sofia to have had her litter.( For those of you who do not know the story, you can see Sofia's profile)

This little guy is extremely sweet, very mellow and seems to have the same shoe attachment as Sofia.. ( he will take his "dad's" shoes, line them all up in the closet and then lay on them.. Sofia takes our shoes and tucks them under her and sleeps on them..) It is conceivable that the young man in question, just might be one of her lost pups..??

I have the guys e-mail address and plan on contacting him this morning.. Not sure what to do.. take Sofia with me to meet the pup? Look for some type of recognition? See if he has any distinguishing characteristics other than a Diva's love of shoes?

Can a fawn female give birth to a black and rust? Do they recognize their off spring after this long? ( almost two years)

I can barely breathe I'm so excited... might have a new one before we know it.

Gunny.. Thank you.. we would definitely will want to do  DNA testing when we meet.. I'm still waiting to hear from the foster parents..

It sounds so far fetched..  but there are NO, Zero, Nada Dobermans who live in this part of the country..I don't want to get too anxious.... but why not??

That's so cool!

And no, most animals lose their understanding that they are related, but who is to say? Just make sure he is a dog-friendly sort and see what they think of each other.

I do believe the genes are there to produce all colors.

Yay!

OOOOOHHHHH!

I agree with Jes - most dogs (most animals really) will not recognize sibs, parents or babies after being separated.  But we all know our Diva is special!  Who's to say what miracles might occur?  And if you do the DNA testing & it comes back a match....   Well, you're mind will be at ease about at least ONE pupper.

(I love the bit about the shoes!!)

Marti.... I KNOOOOWW!! Isn't that remarkable.. she has always done that.. will be looking for a slipper ( and especially flip-flops.. she LOVES our flip flops) and lo and behold will scootch her over ( it's a word) and there it will be.. only one though.. thought it was a dobertrick)

Jess I had heard that about animals.. but was sorta hoping there would be one of those 'Oprah reunions...'.. I'm getting waaaay ahead of myself ( as usual) but the writer in me wants not only a happy ending but a GREAT chapter for The Life and Times of a DOberDiva.

LK,

I dropped Washington State University a e-mail and asked if they do that. They do DNA testing for cardiomyopathy in dobermans so maybe hey can tell if they are mother and puppy. It's a shot in the dark but hey,

ya neva' know!

Oh my!!!  What an ending that would be!

Ok, so I love the shoe thing.  Never heard of that, but does not surprise me that the Diva enjoys a shoe fettish.

Back to the baby.  HOW EXCITING!  You must be all over the place waiting for their call.  Lots of hugs to you and Sophia.  You guys have such big hearts; I can't wait to read this later...

Oh, how neat!  I hope it's so!

I believe for a fawn female to give birth to a black, the father had to have been black, but I'm not sure.  Fawn is a red dilute, and reds can give birth to blacks. So maybe some of them do carry all four?  I saw a neat chart that mapped out all the possibilities, but of course I can't think of wher eit is right now.

Juno ( now WHY WHY WHY would someone name a male dog Juno??) But I digress.,. he does have a docked tail.. so it's the chances of this being Sofia's baby is getting even slimmer.. The lady of the house is away on a business trip to the states, but promises to get in touch with me as soon as she gets back

Ooooo - I hadn't thought about Target.  I don't have a Target and I LIVE in the States!!!  I go about once a year so I understand your excitement!

I agree with Mandy.  Do you the the Lady of Baja would be offended to share her casa or would she just be beside herself with joy for a playmate??  I would be so fun to get them together and see...

Very interesting. Yes, If she were bred to a black/rust male, and even if he carried the dilution factor, there could be black/rust puppies and if he carried the red gene, there could be red/rust puppies, blue/rust puppies and even fawn/rust puppies.

As far as dogs recognizing each other after separations, I think it depends on how long they were together. They go by smell. If the puppy were separated at 7 to 8 weeks, unlikely because of all the changes they go through in the first six months.

My late sister wanted a female puppy from Windy when I told her she was going to have puppies. However, shortly after they were born, her house burned. I took Gretyl to her when Gretyl was 7 months old so she was with her sire and dam for that amount of time. That was at Thanksgiving 1985. The next fall, I went back to Houston and took Windy and Hans with me, and I took Hans over to sis' house one afternoon (Mom wanted Windy to stay with her, she really loved that girl).

Now, Gretyl had become the protector that sis wanted, to the point of warning off all strangers, two legged and four legged. When I got there, sis met me outside and I just let Hans out of the vehicle. Of course he had to "check the mail" and when he got to the corner, there was no barking, just sort of a whining warbling sound from Gretyl. We could see her wiggling with joy through the cracks in the fence and Hans was doing the same. Of course we had to let him in the back yard together, and there was no doubt in anyones mind that they still recognized each other after a year.

Also remember, that when the puppies are separated, mama sighs a big sigh of relief from the departure of the needle like puppy teeth. Even after weaning, puppies will try to nurse if mama is around (for a while) so she is really glad to finally have them gone. On the other hand, if one or two stay and get past the puppy stage, then a friendly relationship has a chance to build.

The real question is whether Sophia will permit a second Doberman to live in HER house. More likely if it were a male than if it were a second female. Very likely if it were a puppy, of either gender. It would be interesting to see how they got along on neutral territory.

I don't think the tail docking is a true indication. Some BYB's have been known to do their own. Does the male have his dew claws? If so, that is an indication that the docking was not done in the vet's office in the U.S. While not for certain, it is still possible, but I have never known of a vet that docks the tails of a Doberman litter and does not remove the dew claws. At that age (about 5 days) it is a matter of snipping them off, no anesthesia, no stitches. (A single stitch normally to close the tail dock).

Running into dead end after dead end on this.. very disappointing, but certainly not unusual for Mexico. Can't get the people who supposedly have him, to respond to my emails or phone calls.. then there're stories on how the dog is back ( back?) in the states...'he contracted distemper while a puppy because of a mange injection; but is okay now..' all this is third and fourth hand information.. I'm not giving up.. and will let y'all know when I get to the bottom of it.

He was named "Juno" as that's the month in which he was found as a little puppy. Sofia was found in July.. it sounds plausible... but it's very discouraging not to be able to put my hands on the boy!

Kate I have had such a crazy week, I forgot to ask you about how this was going.  To me, there's nothing more frustrating than people not returning calls/emails when you really need them to.  Sending lots of hugs.  And prayers that you can find the answers you need...quickly :-)

Thanks Chris.. I called the foster dad again, he said his wife was still in the states.. and they had to find a home for "Juno" NOW. They have too many and two of them have died of distemper.

I tried to find out where he lived and he would not tell me.. I am fearful that this is all going to be  another vain attempt to do something about the over population of the dogs here in Baja

People are aware of their plight, take them in then cannot afford to give them the proper care. I know of one lady who is terrified she will have the dogs taken away from her and get shut down even though at last count she had SEVENTY dogs and three were coming into heat.. It's a lose lose situation. Not enough vets to do the spay and neuters, not enough food being donated, so she feeds raw chicken that comes from who knows where..not enough people willing to adopt street dogs..Not enough money to do anything  it's horrendous.. The alternative is to put the dogs down.

So long story even longer.. This is not a result of the BYB, although surely the male doberman in question is a product of same.. ( even if he's not Sofia's puppy) I'm still on a wait and see, but I don't see a happy outcome..

prayers please

That's such a sad circumstance. Heartbreaking. I appreciate All you are doing to address this horrible plight. Somethings just can't find the full circle. But I know, regardless, you are there doing what you can to alleviate. Bless your caring heart!

Kate, I'm so sorry this hasn't worked out the way you were hoping. I know how it feels to be so up about something then deflated when things just go south. Kate I wish there was something I could do but all I have to offer are my prayers and thoughts.

Your friend,

Terry

That doesn't sound like a good situation.  70 dogs.  Wow.  It's a wonder they don't go ferral (sp?) on her.   Is that the right word?  When domestic dogs go wild?  Anyway, we're praying.

Hugs!  chris

Everything works out for the best, no matter how it seems to be at the time.

It sounds as if 'Juno' has been placed with a family in SanDiego over the weekend.. This is a good thing..I don't think he was getting the best of care here in Baja.. I know the other dogs are not..

It's also really bad timing for us to get another rescue. We're in and out of the houses, packing, moving, still painting and there's no floor in the new place.. so it's just not right to bring a new rescue into this kind of chaos..They've been through too much already..

I was thrilled to think we might have found one of her pups.. seemed a little too good to be true. Unfortunately we'll never know.

I appreciate all the support here.. You guys are like family to us and I love you all very very much
