Summers coming.
Hello everyone, well today is wet and cold again here in Buckinghamshire, but the summer is coming and we are looking forward so much to getting out with Buster our young "Dobe", in the countryside and letting him see the outside world and meet some cows and sheep and enjoying life.
It will be fantastic to have a long walk in the country with him, go along the canal tow path and find a seat somewhere to sit down and rest, let him sniff at the country air.
We do actually have, only 3 miles away, a country park, which is really nice to walk around, up through the woods, sit by a lake and it is so quiet and peaceful, Buster is going to enjoy himself without any dounbt at all.Plus the fact that they also have a snack bar / cafe there and we can sit and have a coffee and Buster can have some water because they put bowls of water down for dogs to drink. But I carry my own anyway, always have done, I take the dogs bowl and a bottle of water so he has always got a drink.
"Yep" I am looking forward to the summer no doubt about that.
Pete.
Enjoy your spring & summer Pete! There's nothing like the sight of your pup running flat out, joyous & carefree, then stopping to sniff a flower [or butterfly, or even the "Hated Hare" :) ].
Oh Yes. Not much better! It's in the air!
OK, we still have snow here in the great North East, New York, to be exact! But, the horses are shedding like crazy and the dogs are bouncing off the walls! My dogs will miss their "snowcones"! They LOVE to eat the snow. We only have 3 acres fenced in for them to run but I can go to the local town park and the off-leash area is about 150 acres! Of course, with the warm weather comes mud and ticks! It's always something!! No matter.... it's great to see both the horses and dogs feeling the spring in the air!
Talking about ... What does everyone use for flea and tick control.. ?
I use K9 Advantix....works on fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. I only have to use it between May and late September, though.
Our vet suggested alternating from K9 Advantix to Frontline ( every 3-6 months) says that they are just a little different and that our kids can build up a resistance to it...
I did find a tick on Sofia yesteday (I use the control all year round as our weather is always fairly warm) it hadn't imbedded yet... HATE ticks..Have never found a flea on her though.
kate i mix it up as well- K9 in summer months frontline in the spring/fall- my vet says same thing about becoming immune. we use nothing from novemeber til march...
I use Advantix as well. The main reason.... I am a gardener and the frontline will kill all arthropods. I was told by my vet that if you use frontline on your dog and your dog sheds hairs in your gardens, you will kill many beneficial bugs as well, grass hoppers, butterflies, etc. Advantix works only on ticks.
Good morning from Buckinghamshire, hope you are all well.
Well we always use Frontline on our dogs, my daughter has got 4 dogs, Cloe a white whippet, Kaitland a Rotty, Betty an english bulldog and George a very very small cross between a Jack Russel and a Chiahua(spelt that wrong I think), anyway she too uses Frontline.
Buster has been Frontlined and wormed with Drontal.
He is coming on "leaps and bounds", we have cured his looseness with his bowels, and he is so happy and active, in fact we have to MAKE him go to his bed and have a break, for a few minutes.
He is a lot bigger now, he has got taller. He will go right to the end of the garden and then look at me and come bounding from the end of the garden and into the the kitchen in about one second...boy can he move and if anything is in his way ...he WILL shift it.
We bought him a childs play tunnel the other day and although he loved the one at his training school, he is not too sure about this one, I think maybe because it a wee bit smaller, but he has investigated it and is on the verge of being brave and poking his nose inside..he is so funny, makes us laugh.
Does anyone on here watch "Animal Planet"......Dogs 101 ? I recorded the one with the "Dobe" on it, it is the dog which features on the Internet, I have seen those clips as well, they are brilliant, I hope Buster turns out like that one.
Anyway folks..it is now 6.10am so time for Tea and Toast...have a great "Dobe" day everyone...speak soon.
Pete.
I like the new pruduct, comfortis. Not sure if that's spelled correctly. We made a rush to hospital for my mom. She's. In her 90th year here and had a heartattack Thursday nite and respitory distress. She is one fiesty little woman. She's breathing better this am and is talking, and giving us the "get me"s every few minutes. Big change from yesterday!
Lets hope she continues to improve, I am sure all our thoughts are with you and send your mum all our fondest regards and best wishes.
Pete.
Pete, I'm so happy to read your posts about Buster. It sure sounds like you have come full swing into the wonderful world of Dobermans! I'm thinking someone is truly smitten..LOL
Barb, prayers for your mom.
Barb, prayers for your Mom!!!
We are using Sentinel.
Geez Barb, I am so sorry to hear about you mom..You've sure had your share ( and then some) of chaos at your house this last week..
prayers and good thoughts.
Pete, thanks for the update on Buster. You've both come a long way since he came to you.
Brilliant I say.. Brilliant
Thank you all for your comforting thoughts and prayers. She still finds strength!
Good morning everyone, well we are absolutely 100% enjoying life with Buster.
I dont deny he is a little "so and so "sometimes, but they are at that age arent they, like any dog really, but he is absolutely fantastic, I wish now we had him when Ben was alive, Ben would have loved him.
But do you know, I have been spending sometime looking around for "Dobes" in general and I think it is true to say that they are not a common breed, certainly here in the UK anyway.
Yes there are without a doubt Dobermanns around, but certainly not in the numbers of other breeds, including the "Rotty". But the more I look at the breed and the more I see of them the more I love them. We are completely smitten with our new little "pal", as I said he is coming on "leaps and bounds".
Today he is "back to school", it is his training class day, 1pm and he will be on the field, so we are looking forward to that.
We take him everywhere with us now, he is fantastic in the car and he really does excel in everything we ask of him, even at his young age. We never go out without him and yesterday because it was a beautiful morning we had him in the car whilst we went to get some shopping and on the way back we had to pass a lovely lakeside area, so I pulled in to the parking area and got him out and he had a walk around the lake edge and of course he had never seen Ducks before so he was quite bemused with them, but he really enjoyed it for half an hour.
We have decided to keep him on Wellbeloved food, it suits him, he likes it and he is doing well on it, so that will do.
So have a great day everyone, it is now 6am so on goes the kettle and put the bread in the toaster.
See "yer".
Pete.
PS:
I dont know who is snoring the loudest, my missus or Buster LOL LOL.
Ah, Pete, the breed has found your heart!! And lucky Buster to have been chosen by such warm people. And everything Ben taught you, Buster is there to receive and build on! Many happy Dobie days to you!
Good morning, thank you for that.
Yes he has made his mark and We look forward to every day with him.
He has a lot of Ben in him, I have noticed some of the things he does is just like my old mate used to do.
But Buster is fantastic. I would love to get some film (dvd) about Dobes, I have seen the ones on the Internet and I have a recording of "Dogs 101" which featured a Dobermann, it is the same dog that features on the Internet, but still nice to see.
Anyway have a brilliant day,
Speak soon.
Pete
After being used to a lumbering Rottie, the speed of a young Dobie can be amazing. My former neighbor once had a male Rottie named Mo (he came from Missouri) and he was a lovely dog. They could never manage to keep him up and I would come home and he would greet me, before any of my Dobies could because they were in the house. I would let them out to run the fence line between our properties and Mo liked to chase them.
The fence was almost 400' long, and by the time my Dobies got to the end, poor Mo was only half way. When they turned, he did too so they all finished at the same time. My neigbor and I would laugh at their antics.
Unfortunately, Mo would not stay home or in my yard (I have almost 4 acres, and wouldn't care, he was a good dog) but would go on down the road and some of them weren't as understanding and complained. So they found a new home for Mo. I really missed that big friendly lug.
They two breeds have a lot in common, and in fact the ancestor of the Rottie is the German Butcher Dog, and it is one of the foundations of the Dobie. Just think of the Dobie as a fast, quick thinner Rottie.
Yes indeed, both breeds are absolutely wonderful, but I have to admit, that I am new to "Dobes", I have been in the rotty world for many years and now Dobermanns are a new experience and I AM enjoying it, plus the fact that I have the grown up years of Buster to look forward to.
I suppose I am still in the Rotty world, although Ben my old mate has gone and is at peace, my daughter still has a Rotty, so we are still there. Her Rotty has not yet met Buster, but Buster is good with other dogs and her Rotty as with all her dogs (4 in total) is very well trained.
Buster is growing so much, I have noticed a difference with him, and I am with him all day, but he is wonderful and we all love him so much. Today is sunday and is his training school day, 1pm and he will be on the field, going through his paces.
Pete.
Fleas? what are those? we do not have fleas in Arid-zona... :) we do have ticks... and mosquito's...
I do use 'diatomaceous earth' on my dogs for ticks and I also use it in my grass for other insects and also in my garden. it is NON toxic to people, pets and also completely non toxic to the environment. I also feed garlic to keep ticks away... and I use a spray for horses that is a citronella base with pyrethrins (non toxic) to kill or repel mosquito's and flies.. we do have flies.. :)
If you want to use something NON toxic on your pets for fleas or ticks, TRY diotomaceous earth!

Here in GA it feels like spring has sprung! The daffodils have come & almost gone, forsythia - hyacinths - wood violets are in full bloom, trees are budding, grass is greening, temperatures are high 60's to low 70's... I, however, am waiting --- Last year we had snow (a light dusting, but snow none-the-less) in late March. And the average "last frost" date is around Apr 12th!
When I first moved to Georgia a very wise old gentleman told me (as I was buying my tomato plants in Feb!) not to plant anything until the week after Easter. He had lived here for 75 years & had learned from experience. Well, being the stubborn "I know everything" person I was at the time, I planted those tomatoes... Then had to go back the week after Easter & buy more because I was out of town for that weekend - and it snowed!!
So, for now, I'm enjoying the wonderful weather, taking the dogs out for as many romps & walks as I can, then getting that wet, "wonderful" Georgia red clay off their paws before we come inside $#@%$!
Enjoy your spring & summer Pete! There's nothing like the sight of your pup running flat out, joyous & carefree, then stopping to sniff a flower [or butterfly, or even the "Hated Hare" :) ].
