Doberman's turning vicious?
I continue to hear myths that Dobes can just simply turn vicious and attack their master or even other dogs they live with. I don't know where these rumors are coming from, but it really upsets me to hear such nonsense! I was told by someone I know, that they just 'snap' one day and attack! The person conveying this to me said he had read it somehwere! This is not the first time I have heard this. It gives our dogs a bad reputation. Any dog can turn vivious when abused or trained to do so!
These stories are as old as the hills and everytime I read or hear them it still amazes me that people still think this.
These mythes are exactly the reason why Phin is not welcome at my in-laws house! Too bad that people can be so narrow minded and breed ignorant, they are missing out on being around such an amazing breed of dog!
Doberman attacks kitty, LOL

Well disiplined kitty !
oops , "DISCIPLINED"
I have heard this many times too. I was in a pet boutique and the guy said to me "I hear them dobermans turn on their owners"..."I heard your an idiot" lol I wish I would have said that but instead I educated him. A few days ago a coworker said "being that they are such big dogs sometimes bigger than humans, what are the chances of them turning on you" today at the petstore right in front of me "I wish it was one of them big mean dobermans" don't know what he was referring to.
The bottom line is people are ignorant and have no clue....they believe what the media tells them. Maybe some day people will realize that all dogs have the potential to do harm and bite anyone.
I love the picture with the kitty!!!
You are so right! They are so gentle, sweet and loving! I would not want to be without mine, and thinking about adopting another one.
Oh this is too funny, I wish sometimes we could say what we think.
The kitty pic is too precious
I wish I could figer out how to put short video clips on here. The kitty's a trip. It thinks it's a dog. We're waiting for it to bark.
I really hate what the media has done to the reputation of the breed.
There are plenty of stories of how amazing dobermans are, yet people prefer to live in ignorance and take the media portrayal at true face value, instead of getting the facts. Truly sad that people would rather avoid being educated.
In my town, people have more problems about Chows instead of Dobes (weird, huh?). Like this one time that I went to Petsmart with Ashe and Zelda, a guy came up to us and asked, "what kind of dog is the little one?" "A chow/lab mix." "oh, keep it away from me then, a chow bit me once." I glared at him as he walked away and his daughter came up and petted Ashe and Zelda anyway. Ashe is just a happy, wiggly puppy that constantly wants to love people, not bite their hands off. That guy really made me mad. </shakes head>
I have often heard these rumors… That my big, bad Doberman is going to turn on me, become vicious, and attack me. I often ask, “why?” Most times I get the response because it part of the breed or all Dobermans are attack dogs… or just because it’s what they do. The most colorful reason I have heard is that it is “medically proven.” Their brain swells with no warning and because of the added pressure they go crazy and attack everything. Nice, huh? I often just shrug it off… She is such a sweetie she wins over just about anyone who spends any time with her.
My father had his doubts when I first got her….( He had a few not so pleasant encounters with breed when he was younger) She won him over in a second. Now my biggest battle is trying to convince him to not keep treats in his pocket when he visits and give them to her when she jumps up on him….
We just have to educate the world, one person at a time.
But, believe me, when I entered that auto parts store that day, the last thing I expected was to be won over by a young Dobie. Windy was four months old at the time, and just so darn cute. Growing up, I was one of those who gave all Dobermans a wide berth. If I could I would not only cross the street, I would go over to the next block to avoid one. But, that was in the 50's and 60's, and if you think they have a bad rap today, it was really bad then. Of course it didn't help that evey one I met was defending it's territory and I was the intruder. But hey, back then I was just a dumb kid with my only real exposure to dogs being a Cocker Spaniel we once had.
The next time I went in the that store (to see about acquiring Windy) I met mama. I went in and sat down, and suddenly down the aisle between two sets of shelves, came this large Doberman, but she was on the other side of the counter. I forgot about the pass through, and suddenly she was beside me. I decided to ignore her. NO WAY was her reply. I was suddenly introduced to the Doberman Nose Bump as I felt my left elbow flipped up and away. I looked at the clerk (not her owner) and he said, "She wants to be petted". I was suddenly part of the Doberman community, and really loved Windy. I would go back in that store periodically, and would be disappointed if Dobie was not there.
I was assimilated, and have enjoyed being owned by Dobies for the last 29 years.
"To resist is futile"
Ray, what a wonderful story! I can almost feel as if I was there feeling you rtension and falling in love seconds later.
When Max took me to pick out Bella, I had no idea where we were going or what he had planned but I had been searching for a Boxer or German Sheppard puppy for almost a year without finding one that screamed take me home and love me. I was visiting the shelters, visiting friends of friends, and just completely saddened because I desperately wanted to find "the one". The next thing I knew we were pulling into his bosses house and we were greated at the gate by 7 adult dobermans who did not look happy at all that we were in their driveway. I refused to get out and laughing he jumped out , walked in front and started talking to one blue male that took my breath away. After his boss pulled in we all went inside the fence and were greated by a litter of puppies and their grandpa who showed me the Doberman Lean.. He simply walked over and leaned up against me looking up at me smiling -> I was hooked in and never left. My heart was beating so fast after spending an hour visiting I was asking how much and if he had a waiting list when Max smiled and told me to pick one. None of teh puppies were spoken for and I was being given my pick but truthfully Bella had already chosen me because when I looked down, she was sitting at my side with her grandpa. I walked away and she followed behind, for teh next 4 agonzing weeks I visited every chance I had and well the rest is history.. Now I am teh crazy doberman lady ![]()
Did I mention I dont mind being crazy as long as I have my babies
In a way, I kinda like the mythes. For one , when the pizza guy comes to your house, you don't really know who he is. He could be casing houses for future shopping sprees, ya nevva know.(That has happened near me before). If there is someone looking through your neighborhood in search of lawn equipment or silverware, you just never know nowdays. With that big mean people eating dobe in the yard or the house that will go crazy and even attack their owners, the zombies tend to stay away.
Despite all the mythes out dobes I couldn't resist putting this on the fence;

Definitely deters zombies!
I wish I had my other laptop with the video of Laith's 'in'famous trait. When we tell a bad story about him or ask him to do something he doesn't want to (or steal his toy) he simply:
-opens mouth
-closes quickly, snaps jaws.
-looks at you
-walks away.
Typical relationship, right? Vicious...
LOl Laith I can soo seee that in action.. I have a friend in Floruida who is a canine officer, his dog tastes the aior when he greets you.. Talk about intimidating he looks like he wants to eat you alive.. He is very sweet once he is told its ok but wow what a deterant.
haha! That is funny. Yes, he talks back to me! Spoiled, rotten.
We had a doberman called Booger. " as in booger getter" lol> He was a very kind and gentle male dog. He would sleep in my brothers recliner while he was work. Which was ok by my brother. When he came home he just said "Booger get off " and of course he did and never got back in chair till brother was back at work again. Well one day my brother came in very grumpy and didnt ask Booger to get out of the recliner just Jerk him 'pretty hard" by the collar out of the chair. Well booger I think was either startled or something cause he reached up and grabbed hold of my brothers arm and bit him. Not real hard but it was like nip and release and growl. He didnt understand being attacked to be taken out of the chair when all you did was to ask. My brother didnt get upset and always remember to ask booger "Can you please get out of my chair? " hahaha.,
Heres another one. One day my cousin was up for a visit. Hes sort of slow mentally and he was a bit scared of my dogs. I have socialized them but they were also guard dogs. He had petted them "I had about 6 at that time' and everything was fine. I was doing something to the car motor I htink checking my oil and he was walking towards the car and stumbled. MY big red female didnt understand his gesture and took it as an attack towards me. The funny thing next is she didnt bite him actually but took his pants leg in her mouth and held it. I heard "ayyeee and he had one leg balanced and other leg in my dogs mouth. She didnt jerk or move just heald the pants. I said " Sienna its ok " and she released him. " then I told him why she did it and he made friends with her again. if she had been vicious she could have ripped his leg off. She only warned him. "Your doing something I dont think your suppose to be doing but Im going to hold you till my owner gives me instructions on what to do next ">>>LOLLL
ha I love that sign
I have had many dogs in my life (Golden Retriever,German Shepard,Labs,). By far the Golden Retriever was the meanest followed by a Tea cup Poodle my wife has. My Dobermans are the most loveable and least aggressive dogs I have ever had. If they had big floppy ears and a long tail the general public may have a different outlook on the breed.
Don't get me wrong when my dogs play they tend to get very vocal and it might alarm some people. But i would feel much more at ease walking my Dobermans through a park full of little children than attempting it with my wives little bitty 4 pound poodle.
Gunslinger, love the pic and the sign, gotta get one!!
Laith, I can just see you doing that, you're so funny!!
xoxo, Soph & Ang
Ill tell you what....I trust dogs alot more than I trust humans! lol..and yeah I agree with everyone else...totally out of line thinking.
LoL I have never seen a single dobe at cesar milan's dog psychology center...I have seen pitbulls and chihuawas bot never dobeys!!
But I have seen a doberman who turned on it's master, but It was also the most gorgeous creature I ever seen!!I am sure it must have a reason but doesnt seem likely because the man who owned that dobey never had a problem from his other dogs!!
Oooh, it happened again today. We took Tony and Tory to an antique boat show in Skaneateles,NY, and they of course got alot of attention. most of the comments were positive, but then one guy comes over and said "they're beautiful doogs, too bad they snap and turn on their owners" I just smiled, thinking of Control Freaks comment(I heard you're an idiot). he went on to say "is that true?" I just said no, I've had dobermen my whole life and never heard of that from anyone who has actually had a doberman. Just snotty enough without being too offensive.
The husband was a little put out, though, the dogs got more attention than his 2 mahogany boats he had at the show. HEHEHEHE ![]()
Other than the mini breeds and toys and ofcourse the terror terriers the working breeds that have been used as guards and warriors (in wars) are the most likely to use a bite when they feel threatened. These are the breeds that were used for bite work and the Dobermann in particular is the only breed bred for protection against humans. Although much of the protection character has been bred down in the American show dogs it still a possibility when the dog "feels" threatened. Add in the reputation that was built up with the Dobermann being the heavy in films and tv and the fact that they were extremely popular during the 70s by drug dealers for a deterient and protection. This breed can't catch a break it seems as to their reputation even though it is a false one. I like to think that maybe the lies about them might be a good thing now a days. It does limit their popularity and allows the shallowest and least likely to welcome the dog as a family member away from choosing the breed. So good for this evil breeds rep, it does keep away the majority of owners who aren't gonna train or understand that the dogs wants its family close by and is happiest in that situation too. Von

You're exactly right. It doesn't matter what breed... if the situation is right... any dog... any animal for that matter... will turn against a person to defend itself.
