Pet Profiles

This morning my boyfriend took our puppy out and said there were worms in his stool. I've not been witness to it, and only just started researching the possibility of worms. Manti is 4 months old, we got him on Sunday afternoon and he's been a little sluggish - which we chalked up to him missing his parents and siblings. On our hour long ride home, he got sick in the car, which we thought was car sickeness - having never been in a car before. He has had some mucous from his nose - boogers, if you will. Two days after getting him he still isn't quite as perky as I would expect a 4 month old Doberman to be - but he doesn't seem uncomfortable or sick. He's eating and drinking fine.

We have an appointment/check-up with the vet on Monday. Should we try to get him in sooner if there were, in fact, worms in his stool? Is there a product available in pet stores which anyone recommends that mind help with the worms if they really are there?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Our vet got us in this coming Monday (six days from now) on a cancellation, and I hate to go elsehwere because I have trusted this vet for years with my pets.

Thank you, everyone!

I would find another vet.  You dont have to make a permanent change, but it sounds like something might be wrong.  Im not a vet by any means, but I wouldnt wait.  So much can happen in such a short window.  Please let us know the outcome.

Call your Vet and tell them she has worms,  they should be able to get her in sooner, if they can't, find another Vet.  You don't want to let anything like that go longer than neccesary in a puppy.   Where did you get this dog?  does he even have any shots?  apparently he's not on heartworm of any kind either....

Called the vet this morning and Manti has an appointment early tomorrow morning - will post updates from there.

Manti is up to date on his shots - just needs rabies, which is scheduled with his check up tomorrow. I emailed the breeder to let her know that he has worms and she told me, and provided the paperwork to prove it, that she de-wormed him, his siblings and parents on August 28th, which matches the records she provided. He came from a small farm in Akron, Iowa - a very happy place. Not a backyard breeder of any kind. The breeder knows Dobermans well and has been breeding them for over 15 years, and was grateful for the email letting her know about the problem.

You didn't describe the "worm" that you're seeing in the stool.  Be sure to take a FRESH stool sample with you to the vets.

typically if you see anything in the stool it would most likely be round worms, hookworms which can cause anemia and if untreated death are seen under microscope, tapeworms are usually not in the stool as much as around the rectum, look like sesame seeds stuck to them.....important to get them in. Will look for an update tomorrow.....

The worms turned out to be tapeworms. The vet gave him a de-worming chewable tablet which he literally spit out - we got him to chew it up eventually. He got his rabies shot, as well. Manti weighed in at 40.1 pounds!

There was a conversation about what food we're feeding him. We got some samples of "Taste of The Wild" and the vet said he needed something for large-breed puppies and suggested Iams and Purina and Eukanuba. No thanks. Picked up some Blue Buffalo puppy mix on the way home and he loves it.

What do you all recommend for dog food for Manti?

There are some EXCELLENT threads on this forum on dog food, go to the top of this page and click SEARCH and type in dog food or feeding and see what turns up - there will a ton of reading but very informative and you might even have more questions after reading those threads, check 'em out.....I know we have Ben our 8 year old rottie with immune disorder on Royal Canin Potato and Venison it's called PV but it's prescription not sure why but it is.....and Ben's coat has never looked so good and it's soft and his skin is not flaky or dry.......

I raised my dober-boy on taste of the wild. I never had any problems. I don't see the need in switching. (I mean, come on, it's grain free, and a great food in general, plus, around here, it's cheaper than blue!)

I don't know whether I should be dissapointed or appalled that your vet recommended those brands. It kills me. Compared to what you've been feeding, those are (in my honest opinion) garbage. D:

A great place to check on the quality of dog foods. (You can also sign up for recall alerts, which are much quicker than relying on your pet food store or the news.)
