Little Dexter (8weeks today) seems to have a minor skin problem. He flakes a bit. Not much, but who knows what it will turn into...

Now 8 weeks old he is on Puppy Kibble for large breeds. Had one bath with AvoDerm Skin and Coat after we got him. Gets his paws and 'other' body parts wiped clean with Fragrance/Alcohol Free Baby Wipes after he went outside to go potty.

Training treats: homemade Chicken Jerky from organic Chicken.

I never had this problem with Sasha. I added EVOO or Coconut Oil to her food at dinner and that was all she needed to look shiny. Right now I am a bit scared to add anything to Dexters food.

I spent some time now reading through the forum and it seems like a lot of you use Avon SSS mixed 3:1 on your dogs. My mother used to be one of those annoying Avon Ladies, so I am familiar with the product. (I still use the pink one every day^^) There are many different SSS out there now! So, wich one do you use for your Dobes?

My guess would be the green (original) one for the bathtub!?!? Or would other fragrances work as well? (Green is my least favorite) They do have a nice dry oil body spray. Would that work as well?

I do not plan to use it on Dexter right now. After all, he is still a baby and might just grow out of his dandruff problem! Just want to know what to try, in case he will need it at some point :)

The only time that Fancy gets flaky (O.K. wise guys...her skin, her personality, um well..LOL) is after she's had a bath. Also, as much as you rinse there could be a little residual shampoo left behind that will show up "flaking".  When my minpin was a pup, he had dry skin.  I changed him to a food with higher omega fat content and it cleared up quickly.

I've always used SSS ( the original) on Sofia..and yes, you're right, I mix it with three parts water and spray it on a towel and rub it in.. She is a fawn and has courser hair and a thinner coat and tends to get a little dry at times.. I do add EVOO once in a while to her food and of course her weekly scrambled egg cooked in a tiny pat of butter. Very few baths.. just the aforementioned wipe down..

I tried the Omega 3 on her, and it totally disagreed with her system. As big and strong as our Doberkids get, they do seem to have a delicate stomach, at least La DIva does..

Dexter is positively adorable.. please keep posting updated pictures.. As soon as you turn around to change batteries in your camera, he will have changed so much.. and you know we aDORE the babies

My puppy rolo had it until he was about 14 weeks but the vet told me to give him evening primrose oil and bath him when I want I also put a little bit of olive oil in his food once a week. I know our breeder uses cod liver oil. He is 18 weeks old now and not a flake in sight he also has fish jerky treats.

Thanks a lot!

I think I just worry too much...

We were lucky with Sashas skin/coat and knowing the struggle my friend has with her Dobe (allergies and then some) I guess I am a bit nervouse!

I will get my hands on some Original SSS. Just in case :) Too bad it is the green one and not pink... I am a sucker for the flower scent!!!

I have EVOO and Coconut Oil in the house. Might start him on a tsp. a week.

What is everybody using as far as Shampoo goes? I had results with AvoDerm, but there might be something better out there?!?!

Depending on how bad the dandruff is it could also be his food.  Rocky's puppy food was not quite as good of quality as it should have been and he had dandruff and I'd give him a spoonful or olive oil over his food a couple times a week.  When I switched him to a better quality food the dandruff issue went away.

I use Dove human shampoo.  Shelbi is 2 yrs old and with the exception of Demodex has no coat issues.  She is shiny, shiny, shiny, I do not add anything to her food.  I feed her Exceed lamb & rice from Sam's Club. This food was recommended by a dog food distributor that I know.  He feeds it to his competing field trial dogs.

Our breeding female had a short bout with flaking, but a little EVOO in her kibble once a week plus an egg scrambled with a tiny bit of bacon fat turnd her coat glossy, but not oily.
