Orijen
I feed my boy Orijen 6 fish dog food. So far, it appears to be good for him. I used to feed him Canidae grain free, which was also good food at a more affordable price. As I'm always in pursuit of good dog food, does anyone have any feedbacks on Orijen?
It never sat well with Harley so we moved onto Nature's Domain. Each dog is its own unique individual, so just get the best food for your dog that you can afford and that he does well on.
6 dogs! Wow. They are adorable.
We're still not comfortable with dog food prices today (especially Orijen); however, we are relieved that dog food has improved. As a caution, check the expiration dates - natural food expires at a faster rate. We have received some expired food from PetFoodDirect.
We're still trying to assess if Orijen lineup is worth it. This is our first Doberman and it kills me knowing that an average expectancy of a male is only 8-9 years. Not that losing a dog ever becomes easier, but we're hoping good food can prolong his life.
I feed Taste of the Wild and it's much better in price compared to Orijen. They have a couple of different formulas with a higher protein count (32%) i think so unless you want a higher protein diet TOW would be a great substitute for Orijen. It's only about $50 for a 30lb bag where i live after taxes.
I have used Orijen for the last eight months. The food is great and since Harley is a blue doberman, I try to get the best quality I can. With that said, I have to cover it in wet (Merick) can food for her to eaven eat it. For some reason she does not like the taste. I have used all of the differnt types of the Orijen but still not a fan of the taste. I started Fromm, she was not a fan. So now its TOW.
This all started when we visited my sister and she got to taste a generic walmart brand aka the McDonalds for dogs...
All that said, Orijen is a great food but so are alot of the others. I too am hoping a good diet will make them hang around longer...
TOW appears promising. At http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/, 16 types of dog food command a 6 star rating and TOW and Orijen are on that list.
I used to bring a dog food back from E. Texas called Precise. It was Sweet Potatoe and Lamb with no grains, and my dogs loved it, but getting it was a pain as it is made in Nacogdoches, Tx by Lone Star Feed. Then I was getting it from Pet Food Direct, and the freight was bad, now it's horrendous. I then was informed about TOTW and I can get it at my local Tractor Supply. You might try the TOTW website to see if anyone near you carries it.
TOTW is made in S. Carolina, Missouri and California. It is grain free, and with tax it is a little over $50 in S. Georgia. When I was getting it initially from PetFoodDirect, with shipping it was almost $60 for the 30 pound bag. Good dog food is expensive, there is just no way around that.
The cost of dog food is one reason the shelters are so full. If you have a choice of feeding the dog or yourself, thats a hard choice to make, but some who are suffering have to make it.
I am predomately a RAW feeder...but when I did feed kibble and I also still feed Kibble to our Yorkie and Shih Tzu (there the wifes dogs lol) I feed TOTW. Simply put I think Orijen is best dry food on market, but I think TOTW is best for the price!!...
I'm in the process of switching Tayoh over to Taste of the Wild from purina. *grumble* I don't really like purina dog foods. Douglas is being switched over to TOTW from Blue Buffalo- just to make feeding both dogs easier. They both like it, and it's not rediculously expensive for me. ($42 for the biggest bag at our local pet supply store)
Can the food cause issues with the doberman getting diarrhea? We have had Diesel for 3 weeks now- and his previous owner had him on Beneful which I have heard bad things about so I switched him to Wellness puppy (he is 7.5 mos old). When I first did the switch things seemed okay- I did it gradually. But a week or two after he started to get diarrhea. :( I took him off the food and cooked rice and chicken for him and gave him canned pumpkin and that seemed to help- looked like the diarrhea was going away- but then as soon as I gave him the food again- now the diarrhea is back..
I've sent out a fecal sample and am waiting to find out if it is related to parasites, etc.
Other than the diarrhea he is acting normal, eating and drinking fine, doesn't seem dehydrated..
Not sure what to do--- can I keep him on the bland diet for a couple days and then just try a new dog food completely? is that ok to do?
Sounds like a question for a professional, a vet. In my experience with various dogs, I've seen diarrhea come and go (even with same food). There are also dogs with stomach of steel and food change does not impact them. In your situation, I believe puppies (up to 14 months or maturity) typically experience irregular bowel movements.
I went ahead and gave him the pumpkin and rice and chicken again and now his poop is more regular... I keep thinking it is the food.. I am going to call the vet and see if I can just completely switch the food after taking him off the bland diet..
Thanks finding Jackson- I didn't know that about the puppies and the irregular bowel movements :) That is good to know!
I've thought about Orijen especially for its high rating but I haven't switched my little guy from Eukanuba. I thought about switching since Eukanuba used to have a bad rating on dog food advisor but has since gotten bumped up a few stars once the ingredients were changed. He likes Eukanuba (he used to eat it in 30 seconds but has just slowed down to taking about 3-5 minutes to eat it (thank god)). I've thought about switching to blue buffalo wet/dry since we used the wet food when he needed anti-parasite medication and he absolutely loved it! But until I have to start paying for food, I'm keep Eukanuba. Gotta love family working for the corporation :)
Hello! For the first year and a half, my 2 years old girl was fed Nutro Ultra Holistic and doing great on it. I always add home made food with her kibble at about half & half. This spring wanted to give her what is the very best, I learned about Orijen. I came to the conclusion this food was way better than Nutro. Even if more expansive by almost 50%.
So I switched her to Orijen. the first bag I got was the red meat kind. She loved it and her stools were nice and firm. Then after that bag, my supplier did not have any red meat kind so I gave the 6 fishes. She loved it. So I kept feeding her Orijen still mixed with the same homemade food.
On the third month of this regiment, I noticed her fur was getting brittle and mat. She started to developed all sort of small lesions and she was loosing a lot of fur and scratching like crazy. At first I thought this was Demodex mange. You just have to Google doberman demodex this and the pictures showing (the light cases only) are exactly was she had.
During the next month I spent nearly $500 with 3 different vets to have her tested. She was tested for Demodex, other parasites, bacterial infection and the full blood tests. Every thing was negative. 2 of the vets said it must be an allergic reaction. Since just before this, the only change in her life, was the Orijen food. So I put her back on Nutro and she is starting to get better. Her fur is now nice and shiny and do not shed anymore. The patches of bald skin are slowly getting better. She still have pimples growing here and there and she is still scratching a lot but not has much as before. I still give her one bath a week, this seem to help her with the scratching. The vet told me it could take up to 6 months before the effect of the allergy disappear.
I Googled Orijen and found out I was not the first dog owner to have this sort of problem with Orijen. This is bad because I like the Orijen Cie. It is made here in Canada. All from fresh components.
Appreciate the input on Orijen. I guess the price isn't the only thing that was alarming.
Hi, I have just switched Loki to Blue Wilderness Puppy grain free.
When I first got him he was on Science Diet which at the time he refused to eat due to kennel cough illness. The vet told me to feed whatever he would eat so I gave him IAMS this caused diarrhea. Then I tried Purina, this too caused really bad issues, took him back to vet and found he had excess bacteria, more meds, most likely will always have a sensitive stomach.
I began to cook only beef and rice for him then added a canned food. I realized the rice was the one thing that did not upset his digestion so he has had rice added to the Blue Wilderness and slowly over 7 days I have transitioned to all Blue and we are diarrhea free finally!
Oh I am so glad to hear Loki is doing better! I knew you guys were having issues with his tummy. We tried Orijen but it just didn't agree with Harley's tummy. Too rich, I guess.
We have transitioned to raw due to some coat issues. Keep your fingers crossed that it works!
YES.....You really got to be careful not to over feed Orijen, because how rich it is.....and Harley ...your dog will love you for RAW....and watch how quick you see a difference....PM me if you have any questions!!!
We've fed Mia Natural Balance since she was 8 weeks. The price is killing me now that she's growing. Anyone heard anything good or useful about 4health food from TSC>
Hey Nupe! I was going to pm you some q's, but the pm button is not showing up for you (just you, I can see everyone else's. Very weird). Do you mind pm-ing me so I could get you email?

I'm very happy with Canidae and dont plan on switching to anything. My doberman and my little dogs all are doing very well on it. I cant afford to feed Orijen to six dogs.
