Exercise Requirements in Mature Dobies
So, I know Dobies have a pretty high exercise requirement (boy do I know...) but wondering if this is a lifelong thing or do they mellow much at maturity? Jasmine is quite pleasant to live with if she gets one good hike/jog a day (and hour at least that includes stick throwing) plus two sessions with the Chuck-it morning and night when I go to the barn. I used to play soccer with her and she loved this, too. We live in a very rural setting and she gets lots of outdoor time. She is very needy and looks for trouble without her daily exercise. My favorite? When I've been working on the computer too long and she's annoyed I haven't taken her outside she'll deliberately go to the trash and shred paper. She never gets in the trash otherwise, even when left home alone. Her way to make a point, I suppose...
I had a female dobie wanted my attention and tipped over the trash.. I said naughty girl go sit in your chair.. well the other 2 dogs were in what she claimed her chair.. so she wanted me to say go sit in your chair and new tipping over trash would do it.. How smart is your doberman lol.
Angel was young adult about that time.. They do grow up but do need excersise ..
I would say you need to excercise her on your terms dont let her tell you what to do.. she sounds too adorable and smart.. she will try to stay one or two steps ahead of you so stay on your toes lol have fun..
I am old so I am getting a very mature rescue because no way can I entertaine a youngster.. funny i only remember the fun good times with Angel not any touch time..

LOL, they do know how to get attention! Loki grabs a shoe, parades right in front of you and will wait until you notice then take off with it. He knows full well that shoes are off limits, will not touch them otherwise!
I dont think dobies brains are total dog brains .. I think Mr Doberman put in something secret when he designed the dobie.. they do not think like other dogs they have human thoughts or know how to capture our human thoughts lol

My Dobe is too smart too. I'll try and be sneaky when getting ready for a run, I'll sneak upstairs to get ready at some random time. But it never fails, even if he was sleeping when I go upstairs to get ready, when I come out of my room dressed for the run he is lying there at the doorlooking at me like 'let's go mom!". He KNOWS, not that I would leave without him, it's just fun to try and surprise him that I am ready to go. My runs aren't complete without my Dobe beside me!
he looks handsome.. you need to share more pictures. we love pictures.... they are so intuned to us you cant get passed them..

I agree Mr Doberman had a special intelligent aspect to his blood lines. Smartest dog I ever owned. I've had Jack Russell, German Shepherd, Collie x ect. My dober kid can tell when we are going away for a few days, he hates it because that means the sitter. He takes our luggage we put by the door and dragged it to the gym on the other side of the house.
So back to the exercise talk, I'm confused with my 2-3yr doberboy. When I first brought him to the vet, he said he was a little skinny at 82 pd. and said when we fixed him he would gain up to 10 pounds. Now my vet said he is to heavy 106 pd. What I don't get is that this whole time I feed him 4 cups of food, measured. no treats no extras , no people food and he has gain this weight. So we put him on diet dog food from the vet. Still no change. How much food do you feed your s. So It has to be the level of exercise. He has almost 2 acres to play in and is out side 90% of the day. He has lots of inside room, like 4000- 5000 sq ft of house to run around. He uses it all He follows everyone every where. He chases the kiddie 4 wheeler when he gets a chance, the kids, the bikes and I try to play with him. runs the property to keep the birds off.
I must add, I know the fetch thing is great exercise, but I'm still trying to convince him to play. I have showed him how to do it, but he just won't. Like he sits on the lawn and looks at me like I'm crazy. The only one getting exercise is me. Tried the treats, sticks ect. When you bounce his ball in the house, he will go get the ball to do it again, but outside .. It's like go get it your self.
So my question is ... Is my dog really over weight or is this his natural body weight based on his blood lines, are the reds bigger than the blacks. My vet has only black patients. My husband thinks the reds might be bigger. Because he was adopted we never seen his parents to know if they are big. He is also tall. His head is higher than my hip.
I will try to post new pictures.
Everything is just chaos: Did your vet check his thyroid? How does his coat look? Take a picture from the top down, so we can see his waist. Can you see just a hint of ribs from the side as he walks?

Talisin's Crittershahahahaha, I noticed that my chihuahua will shred paper now when he gets frustrated that he isn't getting food every 20 minutes, he's just turned 14 yrs. so this is a new thing. The old cat here 19 years old will shred any mail within seconds if she decides to sit down and there is any paper close by. Not sure what that's all about, sometimes its funny other times its just annoying :))
