Hello:

I would like to share something with everyone on this site.  There is a site, a part of the DPCA that has a longevity program.  This is the link for it.  http://www.dpca.org/Longevty/longevity/.  Just in case you can't click on it I have pasted the address right here.  http://www.dpca.org/Longevty/longevity/  (I am playing around with the buttons on here because I am not sure how to use all the fixtures on this site. )  I am sure there are other dogs out there that may be eligible for membership on there than just the ones listed.  But it is a good starting point.  But getting a pup from these lines is not a guarantee against DMC.  However, I see that it would probably better one's odds.

Thanks for sharing. certainly hope my less than 2 yr old Dobe will someday achieve an LC. I save the longevity link to my favorites in the "Sage" folder.

Program is still based in Texas? Of course, we Texans are awesome.

I think the original idea was posed to the DPCA meeting at the national in Houston, but it's really not a Texas based program.  It's a DPCA program - Doberman Pinscher Club Of America.  They just happened to have the national show/meeting there that year.  The woman who currently administers the program is in Ohio, I believe.  But it doesn't really matter.  Anyone from anywhere with a 10 year old Doberman can apply for a longevity certificate as long as the dog is registered.

FWIW, I bred one of the 30ish BFL-2 Dobermans.

Just because a dog is listed on there doesn't mean that the offspring will be such. I happen to have a 12.5 year old doberman that I haven't listed on the LC program and her parents each died at 7 of DCM. This goes to say that alot of people dont list their dogs on here either. I wish that more people would take advantage of it, but they dont. On my current dogs pedigree their are several that are qualified to do so but the owners haven't listed them yet. I think when you start seeing several generations with LC's such as glengates then you have something to take note of. Buyers need to be aware of the pedigree behind the dogs. If your breeder cant answer the questions then search elsewhere.

I have only had one reach that milestone, Hans whom I lost at the age of 11 1/2 to kidney failure. The most common ailment to take mine so far has been cancer of one form or another. One of Hans' offspring, a black male owned by a friend of mine died at the age of 3 from kidney failure.

Just like humans, just because your Grandparents all lived to 100 and your parents are in their 80's doesn't mean you will have a long life. It just increases the odds.

Yes, the BFL-2 dog I just mentioned ... he just passed away after his 6th birthday.  His parents are both still alive - dad will be 11 this month, mom is 11, all 4 grandparents lived past 10 and 11 and he's gone already.  Unfortunately, he liked to eat things that he shouldn't, and he was lost to an obstruction.  All the genes were in place for Deacon to have a long life, and it still wasn't to be.

I'm so sorry to hear about Deacon. Nothing worse then loosing them so young. Thankfully it wasn't hereditary. What is the pedigree behind Deacon?

Deacon's name was Glengate's Single And Lovin It TT - you can see the ped on dobequest.  He was a singleton.  I repeated the breeding a year later, and got another singleton (red female) but she passed away at 2 weeks of aspiration pneumonia.  :-(   It is so unfortunate that Rory is leaving nothing behind.  But, fortunately, her sister, Karma, produced a little better.  Rory and Karma, both champion, ROMC, obedience titled, temperament titled, BFL-1 littermates are alive and well and going strong here at 11 now.  I'm hoping to title both of them in Rally soon.

Glengate, so sorry to hear your sad news about Deacon. The time just slips away from us and the very thought of losing something so dear, so young breaks my heart.

Thank you for sharing this with us

Best always

Katie and Sofia

I am so sorry for your loss.  This is one of my biggest fears about owning this breed--they are goats!  I was lucky in the past--Tara only ate my snakeskin platform boots--rather she chewed them up and badly mangled two pairs of wire-framed glasses.  But she never ingested anything.

It's going to be fun raising one here with the cats <snidely said>.  I have been setting up gates and trying to figure everything out before the pup comes.  I managed to get two of the Carlson pet gates on EBay for $20.50.  Usually they go for a lot higher.  They are the ones with cat doors in them.  I need to get at least one more.  Where I plan to put them there are many doors.  On the first floor, there are three verical ways to get to the back of the house and three of them converge together, with a small vestibule.  I don't want to move the cat boxes so I will need at the minimum 3 gates.  And a condition to owning this dog is that the cats were here first and they are not going to be deprived.  So the toys will go a good three rooms away and I will have to be vigilant.  Somehow, at least not right away, I expect the cats won't even think of toys.  They will be unsure about the stranger at first for a good several months and will probably not feel comfortable enough to let their guard down to even think of being vulnerable by playing.  The pup will be tethered to me for a good few months too--housebreaking, learning leave it (for the cats and a multitude of things).  I think drop it will be even more important to me than the housebreaking because I am so fearful.  I will probably become the most over-protective mother.
