Any Good breeders in NY? willing to travel....
I'm thinking about getting a Dobe, it would be my first and since i found this website today I think it would be pretty easy going with all the great advice this site has. But im from Cicero NY which is like 15 minutes north of Syracuse (central NY). After reading up on this site, it seems the right breeder is very important. I was gonna go to petland down the road but i guess thats PROBABLY not a good idea haha. So anyway, long story short, anyone here from NY and had a very good experience with a particular breeder? Also what am I looking at pricewise for a puppy around here? Thx for any help.

Well thank you. It'll be a while yet before i am able and can afford one but i will definatley do my homework. Thanks for answering my question thats been beaten into the ground haha
It's not that it has been beaten into the ground if you are talking about my reply but it is posted out of love for the breed and someone that spends lots of time counseling and retraining others mistakes. I only want what is best for the breed and the people that seek it. Knowledge holds the key to all things.
"I think it would be pretty easy going with all the great advice this site has"
Please think again. Properly raising a Doberman is not easy. There's a lot, A LOT of work involved. But if you put in the work it is a very rewarding experience. If you don't put in the work it can be a nightmare. But I can assueyou, you will never have a better friend than a well trained Doberman.
You know what I'm thinking? Anyone who considers ANY Doberman subject "beaten into the ground" is just not all that into Dobermans.. There's NEVER enough information or knowledge to be shared.. that's why we have forums.. that's why we have responsible breeders like RnD and Glengate, Alpha Admin and Rgreen who have seen it all and know what this incredible breed deserves..There are wonderful techs like jeshykai who lend their experience happily and without reservation.
There's no such thing as a subject re: Doberman health, breeding, or training that could possibly be "beaten into the ground.. "
Not sure if you understood what i meant by "beaten into the ground". ive been on other forums before with some questions almost everyone asks and people are happy to help but they get annoyed with it, thats all i meant.
and im not expecting the experience of owning a dobe to be easy, all i meant by that statement was there was a lot of great info on this site to refer to whenever i need help or questions about anything, and thats what would make it easier, all the great resources, but not the whole experience in general..
Please don't take our passion for the breed wrong. Sometimes we do overload a new member with a lot of information. You have definitely made the first good step in not going to a pet store. No reputable breeder will sell to one. Some pet stores have two prices for their puppies, one with the registration papers and one without.
Logic will quickly make one wonder what they do with the registration papers to a puppy they sold without the papers. Simple, since the papers have value, they just apply them to the next batch that comes in. After all, all puppies of a breed look alike as long as the color is right. How do you tell one 7 week old black and rust Dobie puppy from another? Unless you are experienced, you can't tell a 6 week old puppy from an 8 week old puppy.
As you read through the topics in "Tell Us About Your Dog", you will see what some members have done to get a quality Dobe. I drove 1830 miles round trip to get Princess. Actually the day and a half driving back and the two hours discussing Dobies with the breeder were very enjoyable. I had extra time with my new girl before I got back and got the other dogs out of the kennel.
You need to evaluate why you want a doberman. They need a lot of love and attention including exercise or hide all of your furniture and shoes. Without the proper attention and exercise they need to let their energy go somewhere like chewing. Dobermans are extremly intelligent and learn easily if trained properly. I do not believe in food training. Dobermans are not the dog to leave outside. They need socialtion with other dogs and people and are happier when they are able to be with you and follow you around. So evaluate your needs carfully and be prepared to devote training time and affection time. I have seen way too many people get a dobe and find out it was too much dog for them to handle. Then the dog ends up at a pound or a resuce. Most breeders will ask you why you want a doberman.
Hey Chris
You can check on Breeders.net. Put in your zipcode and local breeders will come up. Be sure to call around and ask lots of questions...about health testing, how often they have litters, can you come and meet the parents or atleast one parent of the up-coming litter, do they breed to the standard, is there a waiting list, the price, what it includes, do they take care of the ear cropping ( if you want that done) etc. By visiting the breeder, you get a chance to see where your puppy will be raised the first 8-10 weeks of their life, you want it to be a clean, safe and stimulating environment. Dobes have differnt "looks", see if you like the "look" of their Dobes and the temperament. Have them show you the health testing certificates and the pedigree of the parents. By checking out a couple of breeders you will get a "feel" for who you are comfortable with. Make sure the breeder will be available for you to contact anytime after you get the puppy for advice on feeding, training and health issues. You will learn alot just by visitng different breeders as well!
Hope that helps!
I know the BEST breeder in New York! I have to be honest though,a good breeder is going to expect as much from you as you expect from them. It's really time for you to do a lot of homework to be sure you're ready for the commitment this breed demands.A good breeder will ask you more questions than you ask them. They will not sell to people whom they believe will not provide the proper care required for their puppies.Good breeders have long waiting lists and you could be on the list for a year or more because they do not breed that often.
I'm really trying not to discourage you but animal shelters are full of dogs abandoned by people who did not know what they were getting themselves into. When and if you feel you're ready, all the above advice is perfect.
People, please look at the date of the original post to which you're responding. The original poster posted 3 months ago, posted just a couple of times and then no more. Posting to them now is probably no longer relevant. I'd assume they moved on.
There is one on skaneateles lake, the web site is www.bcappaloosas.com. I haven't seen her dogs, but my husband has been there, they have a marina, and he said the dogs are beautiful. I haven't heard anything about the dogs, but her horses are very highly regarded. The web site said Moravia, that's where we are, they are probably half an hour from us. There is also one south of cortland, I have seen her dogs, they are beautiful, but I haven't heard anyting about them. We got Tony and Tory from a "backyard " breeder in Lowville. We made out okay, but you have to be careful with that.Good luck, and keep us posted. now i'm going to their web site and check 'em out

Their are many good breeders in and around NY state. Go to the DPCA website and spend some time reading through all the articles so you know what to ask and more importantly WHY to ask. Their are so many people that come on here and many other lists thinking they have researched enough and know all that should be known only to find out they don't. They go through much heartache afterwards. So really take the time and find a good mentor to help you through the process. I would also join the Doberman talk forum and go back through old posts. Many people have already asked the same question from your area so it gives you lots of breeders and info to consider before movng forward.
