Am I watching the wrong shows???
I'm watching Animal Planet's dog show (Eukanuba 2010) - I think it's a rerun - but I'm questioning why dobes don't win more "Best In Show" awards at the top shows like Westminster or this one. I think this one is relatively new (maybe 10 yrs??) but only 1 doberman has won Westminster in the past 50 yrs or so and that was in 1990. Thoughts please?
I have to agree. I thought the Dobie this year was absolutely beautiful. My heart wanted her to win best in show, but my head did not. Unfortunately, a Best in Show win at the National Shows will translate into more people wanting one to show they are "in", and that of course will translate to more BYB's moving into that breed.
I would have loved to have been able to watch the Doberman judging. Just think, the ring filled with the top Dobies in the nation! What a site that must have been. After all, at that level, even the ones that did not win (they certainly aren't "losers") would have to be stellar Dobies. Unfortunately, they don't show the breed competition.
CJ is a beautiful bitch, and she has won many Best In Shows, just not the ones you typically see on TV.
I saw her in person for the first time last year in Tennessee. She jumped on me from behind and was sure she knew me. I guess I must remind her of someone she knows. Her handler had to pull her away from me telling her "you don't know that lady!" Saw her again in Kentucky last summer.
She has represented the breed very well.
I imagine that was quite a surprise, I at least got a good laugh out of it. That's one way to meet a handler or breeder! :o
She is a good representation indeed. As I said, my heart wanted her to win, but my head said no, the breed does not need that kind of pressure. We have enough health problems caused by unknowing and uncaring breeders trying to make a quick buck when the Dobies were real popular at times in the past.
That reminds me of a red female I had in the late '90's, the granddaughter of my first red male Hans. She had been hit by a car out front. I had been putting in a catch fence in front so if the dogs got out the front door, they wouldn't be loose. She was crying and begging to be out with me, and while working I got distracted and she went across the street. When a car came, she panicked and ran back right in front of the car.
After she came home from the vet, she was a very loving dog, and liked to crawl up in my lap (Princess has started doing this lately), with her rear on my left knee, she would bury her nose under my right arm and go to sleep. Once while my late sister was visiting, she got up, went into the bathroom to get a drink of water (from the water bowl) and came back into the living room. She must have still been sleepy, for she walked up to my sister in the other recliner, crawled up in her lap, and buried her nose under her right arm. Marolyn and I just looked at each other and laughed.
Cindy then started wiggling, trying to get comfortable, and suddenly pulled her head out and looked up. Then jumped off and came over to me. We really had a good laugh on that one. Marolyn said she must not have felt right to her.
Hello:
I was there that morning and took many pictures--not so great, I have an old camera with only one lens. The ones I took are on another forum and are in photobucket. I don't know if you can look them up on there. I got to pet most of the dogs shown that day and hung around the doberman area in the benched area.

Well, there are a lot of breeds for one thing. The judge chooses the dog that they believe best represents its standard.
It's really not a bad thing when the Doberman doesn't win one of these well televised and publicized shows. Winning a show like that is often a real problem afterward for the breed when people who should not own them buy them and start breeding them because the show created a new popularity for them.
